Warner Bros. Acquires Black to Adapt for Film

Black

Studio 8 has announced that Warner Bros. has acquired Black, the comic series co-created by Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3. Original artists and writers of the comic and its spinoffs include Jamal Igle, Khary Randolph, Jennifer Johnson, Vita Ayala, and Liana Kangas.

Bryan Edward Hill, who is a comic creator as well is a producer on DC’s Titans, wrote the script for the film.

In 2017 Studio 8 announced they had obtained the rights to the film with Seith Mann having originally been hired to write the script for the film in 2018.

The original Black comic series focused on Kareem Jenkins who survives being gunned down by police and joins an underground group of black superheroes learning about the world conspiracy that hides the revelations that black individuals have superpowers.

The series debuted with a teaser campaign at New York Comic Con in 2015 and went on to a Kickstarter campaign in 2016 that raised almost $92,000 from 2,775 backers. Since then, it’s resulted in numerous spin-off series featuring numerous writers and artists creating its own comic universe. The series was eventually released through comic publisher Black Mask Studios. A follow-up series, White, was Kickstarted in 2019 and went on to raise a little over $47,000 from 1,420 individuals. That series has seen release delays due to COVID.

Jeff Robinov, Guy Danella, and John Graham will produce from Studio 8 with Black Mask Studio’s Matteo Pizzolo and Brett Gurewitz to serve as producer and executive producer. Osajyefo and Smith are co-producers as well. The team is currently searching for a director.

Batman Comes to Podcasts with Batman Unburied from David S. Goyer

Batman Unburied

Spotify, Warner Bros., and DC have announced that acclaimed film and television writer/producer/director David S. Goyer will return to Gotham City with the new audio drama Batman Unburied. Goyer originated the story for the series and will shepherd the project as executive producer. The series is the first project from the companies’ multi-year agreement to produce and distribute an original slate of narrative scripted podcasts. Spotify will be the exclusive platform for Batman Unburied, which will be developed and produced by Goyer’s Phantom Four production company in association with Warner Bros.’ Blue Ribbon Content. Phantom Four’s Keith Levine will also serve as an executive producer alongside Goyer.

Specific details are being kept under wraps, but the series will explore the darker aspects of Bruce Wayne’s psychology.

The series is expected to debut on Spotify in 2021. Fans interested in being the first to experience DC on Spotify should click here and follow.

Batman Unburied continues Goyer’s long and highly successful association with DC television series and feature films. He is currently executive producing the upcoming Netflix/Warner Bros. Tenet Opens with a Nolan Best While New Mutants Brings in $10 million

New Mutants movie poster

It feels weird reporting weekend box office numbers but Hollywood and theaters are attempting to get back to normal despite reality. Tenet and New Mutants were the two big openers for the weekend with interesting results that are a bit hard to interpret.

Tenet opened with over $53 million in 41 international markets. That’s the biggest opening for director Christopher Nolan. Not surprisingly, Warner Bros. has been a bit cagey about data they’re releasing as far as the performance goes. For instance, the film opened in Canada where numbers were not released and it’s unknown if they will be or folded over into next weekend’s numbers.

The film begins to open in the U.S. this week for an official opening on Thursday for Labor Day weekend.

The final Fox “X” film, New Mutants opened to $7 million from 2,412 to take the top spot of the domestic box office. The film also earned $2.9 million from 10 international markets. The movie was a holdover from Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox.

The film has a reported budget between $67 and $100 million, a more modest amount compared to recent “X” releases. It’s hard to see how the film turns a profit in today’s environment and one wonders if the film would have faired better being sold for $25 on demand.

New Mutants has been savaged in reviews earning 32% on RottenTomatoes from critics and 53% from audiences as of this article. That’s on top of issues concerning white-washing and the inability of the film to get small details right like the spelling of the last name of one of the creators of the characters and comic series.

Theaters are at about half open compared to the same time last year. 2,500 theaters were open in the US and about 3,000 in Canada.

Bill & Ted Face the Music opened both on-demand and in theaters warned an estimated $1.1 million 1,007 locations. Because it opened on-demand in homes, major theater chains overlooked the film.

DC FanDome Generates 22 million global views from 220 countries and territories

DC FanDome

2020 has forced businesses to innovate and think outside the box. With conventions on hold, publishers and studios have had to switch up their marketing plans leading to some to make their own destiny with virtual events. DC and Warner Bros. did just that with DC FanDome, a worldwide event that saw its first part take place on August 22. The event featured comics, video games, film, television, and more, celebrating how DC’s iconic characters have spread beyond the printed page.

DC and Warner Bros. have released some interesting stats regarding their first virtual celebration indicating they see it as a success and something to cheer about. You don’t release these types of stats unless you do:

  • The epic DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes event generated a massive 22 million global views across 220 countries and territories in a mere 24 hours, dominating YouTube and Twitter trends.
  • 150 million views of trailer content launched from the event.
  • The eagerly awaited event — and its fan-favorite films, TV series, games, and comics — were top trending topics in 82 markets on YouTube and 53 markets on Twitter.

The event created massive buzz and showed you can do big reveals with a splash virtually. Wonder Woman 1984 released a new trailer, we got our first looks at The Suicide Squad and The Batman, two new video games were announced, Milestone was given a return date, and so much more generated chatter that has lasted for days.

With this success, the question is out there, do studios need big conventions going forward?

With DC FanDome’s success, one has to wonder exactly that. While they haven’t released metrics, that I’ve seen, Comic-Con@Home’s, San Diego Comic-Con’s virtual event, videos generated a few million views at most for far more videos. However, that event lacked major announcements such as those that were held for DC’s own event.

DC FanDome represents a shift in marketing for comic publishers, movie and television studios, and game publishers. It’s an even that many will go back and point to as a shift in the industry.

All eyes are now upon the second part of DC FanDome which features to different experiences, one for adults and one for kids.

DC FanDome: Explore the Multiverse, a 24-hour, on-demand experience accessed via DCFanDome.com, will be unleashed on Saturday, September 12, at 10:00 am PDT, with nearly 100 hours of content available for fans to watch on-demand, on their own schedule,
for 24 hours.

DC Kids FanDome also launches on Saturday, September 12, at 10:00 am PDT, with its own kid-friendly companion site at DCKidsFanDome.com, accessible on-demand for 24 hours.
