Review: War Mother #1

Fred Van Lente serves up pure unadulterated fire in issue #1 of War Mother. This premiere issue has all the makings of an action packed, fun to follow tale of a post apocalyptic world and a female leader searching for a safe place for her people. The issue starts off with an intensity that carries through from beginning to end with both fierce action and sweet moments peppered in between. Stephen Segovia‘s art style is stylish yet simple making this issue visually appealing and propels the story forward with panels creating meaning and context without the need for words.

There’s usually a problem when male creators attempt to create a universe centered around a strong female, they either over sexualize her, make her strong because of unnecessary pain, or they make her dependent upon others for her agency. Van Lente doesn’t subject his heroine to that fate and Segovia’s art work doesn’t lend itself to the male gaze.

The creative team behind War Mother does its characters proud and creates a strong, feral and complex world in which there is a sense of equality and growth in a post apocalyptic universe. There is a female leader and while her male partner stays home with their adopted child as she goes out to find a new home for her people. Despite this non traditional role reversal there is no hint of either partner being subjugated, they are equals and both doing their part. Van Lente doesn’t make his lead character devious, man hating or unworthy nor does he emasculate her male partner, instead he shows a family functioning as it should with both partners taking on equal , interchangeable roles as care giver, protector and provider. It was a refreshing and realistic take on things that allows his character to not only be more relatable but, provide a hint of honesty and glimpse into what equality really looks like.

Overall, I found War Mother to be beautifully written and I was drawn intro into a new world order where men and women fight and raise families side by side in a broken world as the inhabitants try and find hope and retain what’s good in society. Despite the bleakness of the situation and the darkness of the cliff hanger in the final pages, we are given hope in a dark place and with everything going on in the real world, a glimpse into humanity and heroes surviving in a post apocalyptic society is beautiful and somewhat needed. Especially, if that society shows the idea that a woman can lead in a comic book universe without falling prey to sexualization and having her gender be deemed a weakness.

Review: War Mother #1

WM_001_COVER-A_MACKTwo millennia from today, Earth is not the hospitable home we once we knew. Ravaged by an endless onslaught of war, disaster, and time, the world is littered with desolate badlands, fortified kingdoms, and secretive enclaves where humanity still clings to life… Enclaves like The Grove – Earth’s last known repository of scientific knowledge and bioengineered prosperity. Now, under the leadership of the lone protector called WAR MOTHER and her sentient sniper rifle, the denizens of The Grove face a critical choice: remain where they are and die, or find a new land and flourish. Can War Mother lead her people out of isolation and reignite the fires of a dying planet? And even if she can locate the distant citadel she seeks, can she fight back the horrors and perverse monstrosities that lurk just beyond her doorstep?

Spinning out of last year’s 4001 A.D. miniseries (and additional one shots) comes Valiant Entertainment‘s latest four issue miniseries (although if a recent tweet from Valiant CEO Dinesh Shamdasani is true, then Secret Weapons will be going beyond four issues) written by Fred Van Lente with art by Stephen Segovia and colourist Elmer Santos with Andrew Dalhouse. If you’ve read 4001 A.D.: War Mother #1 then you’ll be on familiar ground with where this issue kicks off, but if you haven’t then don’t worry; Van Lente’s script is such that you’ll be more than capable of enjoying the comic regardless.

The plot finds Ana, the War Mother, in control of a settlement struggling to cope with dwindling resources, and in an effort to make things better she heads off into the wastelands following a mysterious signal which leads to perhaps one of the more interesting moments in the comic as Ana is confronted with the human consequence of her so-called heroic actions. That’s not everything within the issue, obviously, but what is left balances between some brilliant action and a strangely formulaic turn that I wouldn’t have expected from Van Lente. Segovia’s art makes up for the stumble in the story, however as he brings a world far beyond the apocalypse to life – warts and all.

Ultimately, while I enjoyed War Mother #1 it still felt a little just okay as the fairly predictable plot didn’t sing to me; this certainly isn’t Van Lente’s finest work, but it’s not his worst, either. War Mother #1 is worth reading, and I expect the next issue will be better than the first.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Black Hammer #12 (Dark Horse) – Jeff Lemire continues to impress with his take on deconstructing super heroes.

Detective Comics #963 (DC Comics) – Things are kicking up as the group now knows that Tim Drake is alive. But, before we get to that this issue focuses on Spoiler and Anarky.

Mother Panic #10 (DC Comics/Young Animal) – Batman without the restraint. Just brutal and awesome.

Nightwing: The New Order #1 (DC Comics) – Maybe not the best timing but we’re intrigued to see what this fascist Nightwing has in store for us.

First Strike #2 (IDW Publishing) – The first issue started off with a bang (literally) and we can’t wait to see what the second brings in this crossover of properties like G.I. Joe and Transformers.

Saucer State #3 (IDW Publishing) – Aliens. Conspiracies. Politics. The President of the United States. Yes please!

Hard Place #1 (Image Comics) – A former wheelman tries to go straight but is caught up in a robbery and is being chased by the cops and Russian mob. Sounds awesome!

Lazarus X Plus 66 #2 (Image Comics) – Some of the best world building in all of entertainment.

Shirtless Bear-Fighter #3 (Image Comics) – The concept is goofy but we’ve been having a blast with this series.

Generations: Unworthy Thor & Mighty Thor #1 (Marvel) – We’re not quite sure the big picture point of these one-shots, but we’re still holding out hope.

Secret Empire #9 (Marvel) – We’ve had mixed reactions here as to this event (generally negative) but with one more issue to go we want to see how it wraps up and if there’s any way to right this wrong.

X-Men: Gold #10 (Marvel) – The relaunched X line from Marvel has been a big improvement and this is easily its best series.

Bubblegun Vol. 2 #4 (Aspen) -A fun sci-fi series with eye catching visuals that feels like it should have a game to go along with it.

Catalyst Prime: Incidentals #1 (Lion Forge) – The company’s latest addition to its Catalyst Prime line of comics and the first group book. We’re intrigued to see where things go and how this stands out.

Clueless (BOOM! Studios) – As if!? The classic film gets a new graphic novel and we’re so ready to head back to the 90s.

Heathen #5 (Vault Comics) – The first four issues have been fantastic to read and look at in this new take with a vikings(ish) world.

Hi-Fi Fight Club #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Sounds like a riff on Empire Records. We’re sold on that alone.

Letter 44 #35 (Oni Press) – All the answers!!! ALL OF THEM!!! The series wraps up with this final issue.

Sisters of Sorrow #2 (BOOM! Studios) – A gritty series from the same person that did Sons of Anarchy. The first issue felt like a 70s exploitation/revenge film in a way and it’ll be interesting to see where the series goes from there.

War Mother #1 (Valiant) – This character has been touched upon a few times through various Valiant events, but she’s finally getting her own series and we can’t wait to see what’s done with the character. Valiant consistently knocks it out of the park and we’re expecting no less with this one.
