Steven S. DeKnight Makes a Hard Bargain with Humanoids

Humanoids has announced Hard Bargain, their first original graphic novel debut from ‘Daredevil’ and ‘Spartacus’ filmmaker Steven S. DeKnight with artist Leno Carvalho, colorist Bruno Hang, and letterer Troy Peteri. In this dark supernatural thriller, a detective races to solve a deadly mystery in the heart of Los Angeles before a horrific fate descends upon everyone it touches. Available August 2024.

Frank Harding is a hard-boiled P.I. in 1940’s Los Angeles who finds himself fighting not only the usual cadre of criminals and ne’er-do-wells, but also the occasional demon and other malevolent supernatural beings. While fighting the forces of darkness is another day at the office for Frank, his current case, tied into his own past and L.A.’s all-too-real history of prejudice and discrimination, may be the one that puts Frank out of business…for good.

Humanoids has announced a brand new sci fi thriller Eden with story by Alain Bismut and Abel Ferry, written by Christopher Sebela, illustrated by Marc Laming, lettered by Troy Peteri, and colored by Lee Loughridge, about a distant future where a desperate man attempts to save his family from destruction on an unstable Earth but finds that he may have doomed them to an even more sinister fate by sneaking away on a spaceship to the fabled Eden. Available in April 2024.

The Oximenko family are scavengers forced to take drastic measures to survive in a future where scarce resources and economic and environmental decline has caused society to crumble.

When a local family that very closely resembles the Oximenkos wins a lottery to be transported to the safe-haven planet of EDEN, Gabe Oximenko hatches a plan to swap out his family with the winners, getting them a trip to paradise.

SDCC 2023: Top Cow announces Syphon Volume 2

Syphon, a supernatural noir comic and 2022 Ringo Award Winner, is releasing its second volume with Top Cow Productions this November. Creator and writer Mohsen Ashraf continues the series in a new four-issue story, joined by co-writer Arish Akanda, new artist Thomas Hedglen, inker Mostafa Moussa, colorist John Kalisz, and letterer Troy Peteri.

Syphon Volume 2 follows “supernatural empath” Sylas, wielder of an ancient power to sense and siphon away pain from others, as he struggles to navigate his purpose and the moral ambiguity of his newfound power. He is joined by Livia, a scientist and trauma researcher exploring the fringe of the Syphon-verse.

The series unveils new characters and settings, including a Syphon temple lost in the Amazon – brimming with deep lore of the power – and a long-forgotten threat reawakened.

After defeating Antonio, Sylas struggles to navigate life, love, and the moral ambiguity of his newfound power. His physical and emotional limits are tested as he pushes the boundaries of his abilities. As his powers grow so do the consequences of his actions, leading him to face a monster of his own making.

Syphon Volume 1 earned critical acclaim for its dazzling illustrations and colors that blended moody neon overtones with an otherworldly atmosphere. The series was nominated for three Ringo Awards in 2022, including Best Series and Best Artist, and was awarded Favorite Hero.

Syphon Volume 2 #1 arrives November 15. It features covers by Jeff Edwards, Josh George, and Thomas Hedglen.

Knight Terrors #1 continues an intriguing concept

Who is Insomnia? Hello, ghouls and ghosts! Boston Brand, a.k.a. Deadman, takes readers through the current calamity in Knight Terrors #1, a short summer event. The world is trapped inside their nightmares, and Brand has taken over the body of Batman to do battle with Insomnia. But who is this villain? Why does he want revenge on the heroes of the DC Universe? Knight Terrors #1 delivers some of those answers.

Written by Joshua Williamson, Knight Terrors #1 is an interesting debut issue. It runs readers through a quick catch-up as to what’s going on but continues last week’s issue with Deadman standing against Insomnia. It’s an interesting battle with Deadman doing what he can to figure out who Insomnia is and what he wants. There’s some reveals but a lot of questions left to answer as well.

What’s interesting is Williamson’s choice to have Boston directly talking to readers. It’s one way to info dump and the art is fantastic but it feels a little odd compared to the rest of the action driven issue. It also is information that was told in the kick-off issue last week.

The comics’ visuals are solid. Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, and Caspar Wijngaard all take turns on art. Together it’s an interesting mix of styles that generally works and the switch isn’t too jarring or noticeable. The comic also has a rather dark ominous tone about it without being depressing or dipping to far into the darkness. Part of that has to do with the color by Wijngaard and Frank Martin who stick to a lot of purples creating an almost glowing look to the comic. Troy Peteri‘s lettering too adds to the mood giving some a rather unique voice in the lettering.

Knight Terrors #1 is an entertaining debut. While the horror genre feels out of place in the warm summer and overall the comic doesn’t quite completely excite, it’s still a fun and intriguing event with a lot of potential.

Knight Terrors: First Blood #1 kicks off an event with potential

Knight Terrors: First Blood #1

When DC first announced Knight Terrors, their newest event, the concept of heroes and villains being dragged into their fears sounded interesting. The Free Comic Book Day teaser delivered beautiful artwork and enough to make what’s to come intriguing. Still, a horror event during the summer feels a little weird, a disconnect of Halloween imagery during the warm months. That disconnect aside, Knight Terrors: First Blood #1 is a pretty solid start to the event which has a lot of potential.

Written by Joshua Williamson, Knight Terrors: First Blood #1 dives right into the story as he villain John Dee, aka Dr. Destiny, is dragged into a nightmare and seemingly killed. This brings the trinity of Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman together when an alarm is set off in the Hall of Justice and Dee’s body is found. From there, a string of nightmares rise as the world is plunged into terror. The trio are helped by Deadman who looks like will play a key role in the event.

Whether you know Dee as a character or not doesn’t factor much to the story. He’s but a victim of a greater force that plunges the world into nightmares. Williamson builds it all up nicely for the final panel when the villain is revealed and delivers a story that feels like one being sucked into a bad dream. It builds, like dreams do, until things go sideways and you feel like you’re drowning in the visions haunting you as you sleep.

That’s helped by the art of Howard Porter, color by Brad Anderson, and lettering by Troy Peteri. The issue uses purples, reds, and oranges to build a nightmare of visuals with an unnerving feel to it all. None of it will leave you awake at night but instead there’s a quality about it all that emphasizes how off everything is. It’s all twisted like something from a Tool video.

Knight Terrors: First Blood #1 is a pretty solid start that delivers more than enough to get readers to want to see what’s next. with five other tie-ins also released this week, there’s more than enough to check out. This is an event that’s sure to have a twist based on that title, but we’ll have to wait and see what nightmares await.
