The Fate of the Furious Remains in First with New Films Going 2, 3, 4. Guardians Already Tops $101 million.
The Fate of the Furious raced into first for the third week in a row adding an estimated $19.4 million to its total. The film after three weeks has earned $192.7 million and $1.06 billion worldwide. The film is currently in second place for the year behind Beauty and the Beast which has earned $1.143 billion so far. It’ll be interesting to see if it can catch up and pass that film to take the top spot. Furious 7 crossed the billion mark in 17 days and this film was pretty close to that. That film would go on to earn $1.5 billion by the time it was done.
The next three films were all debuts.
How to be a Latin Lover earned an estimated $12 million to come in second. That was earned in just 1,118 theaters giving an average of $10,750 per theater. The film received an “A” CinemaScore and had an audience that was 55% female, 75% 25 years or older, and 89% were Hispanic. It’s another example of a film having a specific audience and that audience delivering solid earnings.
In third was what can only be considered a shocker, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which earned an estimated $10.1 million. That film only played in 425 theaters which means an average of $23,855 per theater. That’s the largest opening for an Indian film domestically.
The Circle came in third with an estimated $9.3 million. That has to be disappointing considering the star power of Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega, and Karen Gillan. The film received a “D+” CinemaScore so don’t expect it to do much better going forward. The audience was 62% female and 44% between the ages of 18 and 34 which may bode well for the drawing power of Watson and Boyega who were prominent in the advertising. The film cost $18 million and acquired for $8 million so it’ll likely do fine in the end.
Rounding out the top five was The Boss Baby which added $9.1 million to its domestic total bringing that to $148.5 million. The film is just shy of $400 million, it has earned $396.6 million worldwide so far.
When it comes to “comic adaptations”….
Smurfs: The Lost Village added $3.3 million to its domestic total bringing the film to $37.7 million domestically and $117.8 million in foreign box offices for a total of $155.5 million. That’s an increase of about $22 million since last week.
Logan brought in $760,000 domestically for its domestic total to reach $224.5 million. The film has earned $607.7 million worldwide so far. That’s about a $1 million increase from last week.
Ghost in the Shell added $430,000 to its domestic total bringing that to $39.9 million. The film has earned $166.1 million worldwide. That’s a $4 million increase from the previous week.
The LEGO Batman Movie still is earning bringing in about $1 million since last week. And finally, Wilson looks like its earned no money since last week.
Opening domestically this week is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which is sure to be the top film at the box office. The film has opened in 58% of the international market this past weekend where it earned an estimated $101.2 million. The film was in first place in almost all of its markets.
We’ll be back in an hour for a deeper dive into the numbers for this comic adaptations.

It was a weekend as expected where Boss Baby came in first place repeating in its second weekend. The film earned an estimated $26.3 million bringing its domestic total to $89.4 million. The film narrowly beat Beauty and the Beast again which repeated in second place. That film earned $25 million to bring its domestic total to $432.3 million domestically and $977.4 million worldwide. The film will likely cross the billion dollar mark this coming week.
Even with a 49.4% drop from last weekend, Beauty and the Beast was a monster at the weekend box office. The film came in second again earning an estimated $88.3 million. That’s the fourth largest second weekend of all-time. It’s the top film of 2017 already after two weeks by a sizeable amount. Domestically, the film has earned $317 million which is about $116 more than the second place Logan. Worldwide the film has earned $690.3 million which is about $125 million more than the second-place Logan.
Kong: Skull Island was the king of the weekend box office bringing in an estimated $61 million to take first place. The $185 million budget film also earned $81.6 million in 65 territories. The film outperformed expectations and is set to do well in the coming weeks. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore and its audience was 56% male vs. 44% female, of which 18% were under the age of 18 and 52% were under the age of 35. Audience members under the age of 25 gave the film an “A” CinemaScore.
As it’s no surprise, Logan came in first place this past weekend with an estimated $88.4 million. The “R” rated film had the widest release of a film of its type with 4,071 screens. The film saw $10.1 million of its dollars coming from 381 IMAX screens. The film earned a similar amount in foreign IMAX screens with $10.6 million. The film earned $159 million in 81 foreign markets for $247.4 million so far.
Get Out got people out to the theaters. The film earned an estimated $30.5 million in its debut weekend. The film has earned a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an 8.1 on IMDB, and A- Cinemascore. The film’s positive word of mouth should see it do well next weekend even against tough competition wit Logan‘s debut.
The LEGO Batman Movie was first place this weekend earning an estimated $34.2 million domestically in its second weekend. The reportedly $80 million film has now earned $98.8 million domestically and $170.8 million worldwide after two weeks. With this Monday being a holiday the film should have a solid four day weekend.
