Suicide Risk #1

SuicideRisk_01_preview_Page_1Super-powered people are inexplicably rising from the streets and there’s a big problem: Too many supervillains, not enough superheroes. Heroes are dying, and cops are dying twofold. Humanity is under-powered and good people are suffering untold tragedies trying to stem the flow. Beat cop Leo Winters is one of those struggling to make a difference. And the answer just might come in the form of two lowlifes with a dark secret.

I’ve enjoyed Mike Carey’s previous work on X-Men and The Unwritten so his name on a new series immediately catches my interest. When I heard this was about a cop thrown into a world of superheroes and supervillains my mouth salivated a bit. To few comics where we get to see the impact of having these powered individuals running around on the average person. The concept of cops dealing with the issue is underused and one I’ve wanted more of since Gotham Central.

I cracked open this first issue and was pleasantly surprised with what I found. The comic has not only action and what feels like real world stakes, it also includes more than enough to make these characters actual people. They aren’t stereotypes, they’re fleshed out characters with families, relationships and feelings.

A first issue is supposed to hook you in and want you to come back for more. It’s supposed to get you interested in the world, entertain and give you some idea as to what’s going on. This one does so and more. I felt like I was reading an awesome pilot for a television series that should be made (but never will since good ideas like this don’t make it on tv). I love the idea of Law & Order mashed together with capes and powers. This seems to be it.

I’m not sure this will replace Gotham Central, but with the first issue, it seems like it might be a worthy successor.

Bravest Warriors #8

BravestWarriors_08_preview_Page_01The most nefarious force in the universe has finally followed through with its plan to steal brains through an alien beauty pageant! Can the Warriors stop it with POWER and RESPECT? The final issue of the arc, and the final Nick Edwards connecting B cover!

How much can I praise Bravest Warriors? Eight issues in, and I find myself laughing with each and everyone. Just when I think it can’t get funnier, it gets weirder… and funnier. While the art might make you think this is a series aimed at kids, its humor is subversive and actually adult. The comic is one of a growing amount of stories aimed not just at kids, but also their parents.

This issue is the final of the latest story arc involving stealing brains and a beauty pageant. It’s conclusion is just out there and crazy and I loved every minute of it.

I can only describe the issue and series as an action-comedy, with this one leaning more on the side of punching of faces.

We not only get the end of this story arc, but a back-up story that’s just as out there and shows how the series blends humor for both adults and kids as it can be taken and enjoyed in numerous ways.

Supurbia #7

Supurbia_07_preview_Page_1Tia and Batu battle the Daughters of Bright Moon as they attempt to escape Mongolia… Helen’s corruption of Sara reaches a turning point… Hector Hunt’s devious jailbreak is enacted during the chaos of the Weapons Expo… And Gio uncovers secrets that stretch all the way back to Supurbia Vol.1 #1!

I’ve never been much of a fan of soap operas. Where lots of my friends in college and after still dig the daytime soaps or their night-time cousins, it’s never been my thing. I can say though, I’m a huge fan of this comic series which is a soap opera with tights and powers.

Writer Grace Randolph has been building the series and dropping reveals and bombs like you’d expect on your favorite television shows. Its pacing and storylines are fun and entertaining, you never know what will happen next.

Sex, violence, double crosses, cheating, family issues, fighting, it’s all here, just like the classic soaps. This issue has things that reference the first volume which seems like it was ages ago. Something that’s great for long-time readers and shows that Randolph isn’t in any hurry to rush through storylines.

I’ve been championing this series since its first volume which launched a fresh idea in a fun package. This second volume has taken that ball and run with it. Do yourself a favor and pick up the first volume if you haven’t, I guarantee you’ll be hooked. It’s not too late to dive in and get into this capes and tights series that mixes action with drama.

Picks of the Week: Bravest Warriors #8 and 9 Other Choices

Bravest-Warriors-8-cover-B-Nick-EdwardsThere are few comics that get me to laugh each and every issue. Bravest Warriors is one of those comics. This comic might look like it’s for kids, but the subversive humor is anything but. With moments that get me to say “holy shit” then laugh out loud (literally laugh out loud, people stare) the comic has it all in a crazy package. From the creator of Adventure Time, the series is the sci-fi cousin of that popular series. Featuring a team of adventurers to stories are bizarre and beyond entertaining.

Check out below for the rest of our picks!

  • Bravest Warriors #8 – see above
  • Avengers #11 – One of Marvel’s best, the series seems to be merging many corners of the Marvel Universe, like the New Universe. For die-hard fans only, the series is thick with continuity, but also a threat that’s “Avengers worthy”
  • Batman #20 – The last issue before Zero Year. Batman is still dealing with the loss of his son.
  • Chin Music #1 – A new Image series that looks to continue the streak of hits. Shaw is a man on the run and lost in time. Fleeing ancient enemies, Shaw finds himself in prohibition-era Chicago surrounded by gangers and demons alike and caught between law enforcement and the local supernatural underground. The comic is a tale of mysticism and violence like nothing you’ve experienced before.
  • Grimm #1 – Based on the popular television series. I’m expecting a possible hit from non-regular comic readers.
  • Star Wars #5 – Brian Wood has given us a new and interesting Star Wars story devoid of years of continuity and history.
  • Supurbia #7 – Super powers + soap opera = awesome!
  • Thor: God of Thunder #8 – Jason Aaron has been giving us an awesome Thor and the art is some of the best out there.
  • Uncanny Avengers #8 – The series started off slow, but has been getting better. The tension between mutants and humans is the main focus and something missing from most of Marvel NOW!
  • The Walking Dead #110 – Do I really need to push this one? The series is a cultural phenomenon and one of the few with crossover fans from outside comics. A true success in bringing in new readers from a new entertainment venue.
  • X #1 – The return of Dark Horse’s gritty anti-hero.

Top 10 Picks of the Week: Hawkeye #9 Tops the List

Hawkeye_9_CoverThis week is an interesting week of releases, dominated by Marvel comics, most other publishers have a fairly light week of comics. Even with that, it’s kind of hard to not go with Hawkeye #9 as the top comic for the week. Easily one of the best comics on the market, the art, writing, everything is top-notch fun.

I can’t stress enough how amazing this series is. Folks really need to check out a comic that’s universally praised. We all deserve comics of this quality, we need to make sure to support them when we do get them.

  • Hawkeye #9 – see above
  • Saga #12 – Another top-notch series focuses a bit more on the Robots and their role in the greater war. While the series shifts a bit in its focus, it gives us a key chapter that fleshes out the universe as a whole.
  • The Walking Dead #109 – Easily one of the best story arcs in a long time of the series continues.
  • Uncanny X-Men #4 – Bendis has made this squad of revolutionary X-Men sympathetic. All of that is wrapped up in amazing artwork.
  • Bravest Warriors #7 – The series might look like it’s for kids, but there’s some much wrong hilarity, I can’t recommend this series enough.
  • Mega Man #24 – This is it. The beginning of the Mega Man, Sonic crossover event!
  • Supurbia #6 – Super heroes meets soap operas is entertaining fun and a great read. Another series worth checking out.
  • Star Wars #4 – Brian Wood has given us an energized re-imagined original Star Wars free of the bogged down continuity.
  • X #0 – Dark Horse’s vigilante is back and boy is this first issue brutal.
  • G.I. Joe: Cobra Files #1 – The third new G.I. Joe series completes the package in IDW’s reboot of the beloved franchise.

Pick of the Week – Uncanny X-Men #1

UncannyXMen_1_CoverThere’s a juggernaut of a comic hitting shelves this week, Uncanny X-Men #1. An easy pick, this comic follows Cyclops and his crew of mutant revolutionaries as they gather activating mutants and train them up. Other than that, who knows what to expect from this series other than showing the mutant rift from the Cyclops’ view. But, a team consisting of Cyclops, Magik, Magneto and Emma Frost, plus whomever they pick up sounds exciting to me. This will be the huge comic this week and probably of the month too.

  • Uncanny X-Men #1 – see above
  • Batman #17 – It’s hitting the major newspapers so expect lots of hype and interest. I’ve read it and it’s a solid end to the latest Batman epic story, Death of the Family.
  • Supurbia #4 – Grace Randolph’s series has been a super hero soap opera filled with dysfunctional characters and juicy plot lines to keep people entertained. If daytime soaps were like this, I’d be watching them all the time.
  • The Strain #11 – Dark Horse’s vampire series has been an amazing journey so far, piling on the creepy each and every issue.
  • The Walking Dead #107 – Rick confronts Nagen over Carl and it’s tense.

Review – Bravest Warriors #4 and Supurbia #3

Bravest Warriors #4

BravestWarriors_04_preview_Page_01The new series from the creator of Adventure Time is now an ongoing series. This issue marks the conclusion of the debut arc. The Bravest Warriors have to band together to defeat the most nefarious villain of all…Sadness, bro! But Sadness isn’t going down without a weepy fight!

If there’s one comic I seem to laugh at consistently, it’s Bravest Warriors, a twister adult story with the look of a children’s cartoon. The first arc wraps up with a conclusion that at the same time made my head hurt and had me laughing.

The conclusion of the arc is over the top and putting two much thought into it, you might not enjoy it, but the comic is supposed to be over the top and not necessarily make sense. To offend, to make you laugh, to entertain you, this comic does that and more.

Bravest Warriors, I might have had my doubts, but so glad I checked it out. A great series that keeps me entertained month after month with each issue.

Supurbia #3

Supurbia_03_preview_Page_2After last month’s shocking events, Hella struggles to keep her carefully constructed suburban world from crumbling around her… While Jeremy and Eli attempt to escape the jungles of Mongolia, with the Daughters of Bright Moon hot on their tail, the Jenkins marriage hits a snag as Tia wishes to rejoin the “workforce…” Zari and Sara’s play-date is crashed by an uninvited visitor, and Gio makes an announcement that shocks the world, but none more so than Paul… All that, AND a cliffhanger that will have everyone talking. Don’t miss it!

That cliffhanger was good, but I think the highlight of the comic is right there on one of the covers, the one with Agent Twilight and hints at Night Fox. The most soap opera-esque plot line also gets the least number of pages. There’s a lot going on and a decent amount to keep track of, but Randolph pulls it off masterfully, making it easy to follow and everything gets the time it deserves.

The series might star characters that’d fit in any super hero comic, it’s more soap opera than anything else and it’s beyond entertaining. If you’re a fan of super hero comics, but are bored of the usual bad guy vs. good guy plots, do yourself a favor and check out this series.
