When it Comes to “R” Comic Adaptations, Deadpool Isn’t Anything New

There’s been much being made in the press of Deadpool‘s opening weekend success and the fact that it’s a comic book adaptation that’s rated “R”. God forbid facts should get in the way, but the film isn’t anything new when it comes to that, and it’s success can be debated compared to other films.

From what I can tell, the first comic adaptation to be rated R is The Crow which came out in May of 1994 and was followed in September by Timecop. To date, including Deadpool, there’s at least 35 films based on comics and rated “R”. In other words, this is nothing new. It’s not even the first Marvel comic movie to receive an “R” rating. All three Blade films earned that honor as well as the two Punisher films.

We can measure success in many ways, and Deadpool absolutely shattered records. In one weekend the film earned 4.87 times its budget. But, when it comes to earning more than its budget, that prize currently goes to 300 which earned 7.02 times its $65 million budget.

When it comes to the long end tail of things, Ghost World is actually the most successful going on to earn 62.94 times its opening weekend domestically. American Splendor is second best with 37.64 times, and Snowpiercer is third with 26.66 times.

What more records will Deadpool break and how will it stack up to these other films? We’ll have to wait and see. But remember, there was a long line of “R” rated comic adaptations before it.

Comics to Enjoy This Snowy Weekend

Mister_Freeze_BTASA pretty big snowstorm is burying parts of the United States this weekend, and could force individuals to be stuck inside for at least a few days. So, the team has decided to get in to the snowy spirit and have suggestions for comics and graphic novels to enjoy during your time stuck inside.

We’re also including links if you can get the comics digitally so you can enjoy them now!

Mr. H: Not a comic book but I highly suggest you stream or watch the classic Batman the Animated Series episode “Heart of Ice” one of the best in the entire run, and it even has chicken soup. Also Batman! You can watch it on Amazon Prime right now.

250px-New_whiteout_tpbAlex: Batman: Noel – Yes, it’s a retelling of A Christmas Carol, but Lee Bermejo’s art and Barbara Ciardo’s colours just make you feel the cold. The art is just blood fantastic. That it takes place within a Gotham blizzard is just the icing on the cake. Kindle & comiXology.

Elana: Whiteout by Rucka and Lieber. You can get the Definitive Edition for the Kindle.

Alex: Wolverine: Bloodlust – I’m not going to pretend this story doesn’t hold a special place in my heart because it was the first solo Wolverine story I’d ever read, because it does, but the way Alan Davis draws the cold, yet supremely beautiful Canadian wilderness is fantastic. And the last page? Oh man.

Madison: Currently experiencing the snow you’re about to get! Lumberjanes #14 and #15 are an excellent little standalone story about a freak snow storm in the middle of summer. It’s probably not the weirdest shenanigan that the Lumberjanes have been involved in, but there story is, as usual, cute and funny with a good lesson to be learned by the end. Get it on Kindle #14 #15, or comiXology #14 #15.

Winterworld-01-pr-1-edb47Meghan: 30 Days of Night! Lots to choose from and start with volume 1 on comiXology.

Ash: Amazing Spider-Man #700.1 and #700.2. Spider-Man’s choice between responsibility and power are particularly important when NYC is buried in the snow. Get #700.1 and #700.2 on comiXology.

Javier: Chuck Dixon’s and Jorge Zaffino’s Winterworld. Oldie from the eighties. IDW collected it in a TPB about a year ago I think. Kind of like Mad Max with ice and snow. You can get it for Kindle and comiXology now.

Brett: I have to go with Snowpiercer! The world is destroyed in freeze and all of humanity that’s left is safe on a train which can never stop, or they die. You can buy volume 1 or 2 in print only it looks like. The movie is great though! You can watch that now on Amazon or on Netflix.

Snowpiercer Coming to Blu-Ray/DVD October 21st

SnowpiercerOne of the best reviewed films of the year, Snowpiercer, will be out on Blu-Ray and DVD on October 21st. The film, which is directed by Bong Joon Ho, stars Chris Evans, John Hurt, Ed Harris, Kang-ho Song, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, Ah-sung Ko, Alison Pill, Luke Pasqualino and more. It opened in limited release and did open in wider release, but it didn’t manage to get an even wider audience. Now thanks to all the great reviews and word of mouth, it’ll definitely get more watches now that it’s coming out on Blu-Ray and DVD. Did you guys see the film? What did you think of it? It’s one of the best roles Chris Evans has taken on, he was wonderful in this. The whole cast did a great job and it’s directed brilliantly.

Here’s a synopsis of the film:

A failed global-warming experiment kills off most life on the planet. The final survivors board the SNOWPIERCER, a train that travels around the globe via a perpetual-motion engine. When cryptic messages incite the passengers to revolt, the train thrusts full-throttle towards disaster.

You can currently pre-order it on Blu-Ray and DVD on Amazon. Both versions have a 2nd disc filled with special features.

Apes Rule the Box Office Again. Transformers Rule Globally.

dawn of the planet of the apesDawn of the Planet of the Apes remained in the top spot at the box office. The film earned an additional $36 million, only a 50 percent drop from the previous week’s debut, which isn’t bad since other sequels this summer have seen a much sharper decline.

In other geek movie news… Transformers: Age of Extinction was fifth this past weekend, and to date, the film has earned $227.2 million. The film has a chance to challenge for the top spot as far as domestic grosses.

Domestically, the top comic related films of the summer are Captain America: The Winter Soldier, still holding strong with $258.4 million, X-Men: Days of Future Past is in third at $230.5 million. Transformers is fourth. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is at $201.6 million for sixth. 300: Rise of An Empire is at 17 with $106.6 million, and Edge of Tomorrow has earned $96.6 million. Snowpiercer is at $3.5 million.

Globally, thinks are a bit different. Transformers: Age of Extinction tops things globally with $886.3 million earned. X-Men is second at $736.3 million. Cap is third at $712.7 million. Edge of Tomorrow has earned $357.9 million. 300: Rise of An Empire has earned $331.1 million. Snowpiercer has earned $83.7 million.
