Pick(s) of the Week: Batman/Superman #2 and Many More!

BatSupeComboCover095956--525x800Welcome to the new pick of the week, where we survey the Graphic Policy team to see what they’re looking forward to this week or what they know will be a solid read. This week, the team has one book among them that they agreed upon, Batman/Superman #2 by DC Comics.

Consistently mentioned by each contributor is Greg Pak’s writing combined with Jae Lee‘s art. The combination is clearly a draw for each of us. Plus, we’re all intrigued to find out what happens next!

Check out below for each team member’s picks and find out what you should be on the lookout for this Wednesday.

Andrew:

Batman/Superman #2 (DC) – Although I wasn’t thrilled with the first book, after hearing the announcement of a Batman/Superman movie at SDCC, I think it’d be smart to give this series a chance.

Lobster Johnson: A Scent of Lotus #1 (Dark Horse) – Seriously looking forward to Mike Mignola’s Hellboy spinoff and cult favorite, Lobster Johnson, in this two part mini series. I give this first book a stellar review in a forthcoming post.

Mass Effect Foundation #1 (Dark Horse) – Most video game to comic book series fail to impress, but they’ve secured Mac Walters, the writer of the second and third Mass Effect games, and I don’t want to pass this up.

Batman The Dark Knight #22 (DC) – I’ve been on a pulp kick lately that’s made me neglect the Caped Crusader. Once I catch up on the Mad Hatter’s finale, I’ll jump into Hurwitz’s latest story arc.

Ghostbusters #6 (IDW Publishing) – Just because I didn’t give I glowing review to the previous issue, doesn’t mean I don’t want to know what happens. I’m willing to stick with it and see what happens as the paranormal investigators reintegrate back into society.

Brett:

Top Pick: The Massive #14 (Dark Horse) – Brian Wood’s amazing series following the crew of the Kapital and their search for their sister ship in a world devastated by environmental disaster. The current story arc is tense with the threat of further destruction in the shape of nuclear war.

Mind MGMT #13 (Dark Horse) – Matt Kindt’s crazy tale of special agents with amazing powers. The small details in every comic makes the series stand out, not to mention the amazing story telling and Kindt’s art.

Red Team #4 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Garth Ennis’ tale of a team of rogue cops is as gritty and heartbreaking as they come.

Thumbprint #2 (IDW Publishing) – Joe Hill’s horror story (I think) involves a female Iraq War vet. It’s a bit, I Know What You Did Last Summer, but I’m hooked.

Wild Blue Yonder #2 (IDW Publishing) – The first issue caught me off guard and blew me away. An amazing fun story of a world dominated by those who live in the sky. Fun characters and exciting sequences with fantastic art makes this one stand out for me.

Scott:

Top Pick: Lazarus #2 (Image) – The first issue of Lazarus set up such an engaging world and interesting characters, and I’m interested to find out when the first arc will really begin to pick up steam. Plus, it’s Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, so there’s really no reason you shouldn’t be reading this book.

Batman/Superman #2 (DC) – Come on. Jae Lee drawing Batman. That’s all.

Lobster Johnson: A Scent of Lotus #1 (Dark Horse) – I’ve never read a Lobster Johnson book before, but I’m a sucker for pulp adventure heroes, and Sebastián Fiumara’s art looks absolutely exquisite: grim and detailed when necessary, bold and cartoony a page later. And Dave Stewart is a master colorist.

Mark Waid’s The Green Hornet #4 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I’m so excited for this issue because Mark Waid, in only three issues, has crafted an emotionally complex story, and I just can’t wait to see what happens next.

Rocketeer/Spirit: Pulp Friction #1 (IDW Publishing) – I love the Rocketeer, and I loved Waid’s last Rocketeer mini (Cargo of Doom); it was perfectly ridiculous. I’m really curious to see how this pulp inspired team up works out.

Sean:

Top Pick: Batman/Superman #2 (DC)—because we need to figure out what the heck that first issue was about! Plus, Greg Pak and Jae Lee make a great team on this strange, singular book with wonderful art and somewhat ominous plotting. The first issue blew me away, and left me wanting exactly this next issue. $3.99.

Gamma One-Shot (Dark Horse)—Ulises Farinas debuts what looks like a sci-fi, Adventure-Timey weird-fest; check this out if you’ve got the extra $2.99.

Larfleeze #2 (DC)—Giffen’s and Kolins’ Douglas-Adams-esque breakout book about the funny-as-Hell Orange Lantern continues with a battle against Laord of the Hunt. $2.99.

Lobster Johnson: A Scent of Lotus #1 (Dark Horse)—Mignola brings back Lobster Johnson to track down the Crimson Lotus, starting off a new mini-series. $3.50.

Superior Spider-Man Team Up #1 (Marvel)—and while Superior Spider-Man #14 (also out this week) is a must have in my opinion, if you’re on a budget you’ll want to check out the beginning of this new team up book which starts with Spidey and the Avengers figuring things out. $3.99.

TPB of the Week: Camelot 3000 (DC)—collecting the 1982-1985 maxi-series of the same name, this TPB presents not only a major piece of DC Comics history, since Camelot 3000 was one of the first direct market series and DC’s first maxi-series (think Brightest Day), but it is also a crazy-cool reimagining of the King Arthur stories, in typical 1980s fashion, mixing the tale with nuclear issues, challenging gender roles, and…aliens! $19.99 (but I ordered it from Amazon for $16.51).

Picks of the Week: Garth Ennis’ Red Team #3 and 10 Other Choices

RedTeam03-Cov-ChaykinThis week is a solid week of releases and it’s a tough choice to narrow it down to a top ten, let alone a top book, but for me, one of the best new series of the year is Garth Ennis’ Red Team which sees its third issue released this week.

The series follows a disgraced team of cops and their downward spiral as they take the justice into their hands and go outside the law. The story is great, dialogue fantastic and art is solid.

This is a series for fans of cop stories, especially crooked cop stories. Easily one of my favorite series of the year, and one that I hope folks check out before its too late.

So, check out Red Team #3 and the rest of our picks for the week.

  • Garth Ennis’ Red Team #3 – See above
  • Age of Ultron #9 – This is it. One more issue until it all comes together. A lot needs to still happen, so how its pulled off in two issues….
  • All New Secret Skullkickers #1 – Off the rails fantasy awesomeness. While it might say #1, it’s the continuation of the fun fantasy series by Jim Zub.
  • Astro City #1 – Kurt Busiek’s classic series is back.
  • East of West #3 – Its wild west meets sci-fi as the horsemen of the apocalypse  wander a world familiar, but not so much.
  • Oxymoron HC – The hit indie Kickstarter project gets to the masses.
  • Rachel Rising #17 – Why aren’t you reading this series! Amazing horror, go out and find it if you can.
  • Silence & Co. – You can read our review.
  • Suicide Risk #2 – BOOM!’s new series sees regular cops dealing with heroes and villains with extraordinary power.
  • Ten Grand #2 – Joe’s Comics is back with this excellent moody series. The first issue was solid, crossing my fingers the second is just as good.
  • Ultimate Comics Ultimates #25 – Something major is about to go down in Marvel’s Ultimate universe and it’s likely starting here.

Review – Mark Waid’s The Green Hornet #1 and Garth Ennis’ Red Team #2

Mark Waid’s The Green Hornet #1

GHWaid01-Cov-RiveraThe Hornet faces his most dangerous enemy ever–an egotistical, arrogant Britt Reid! In his alter-ego as a powerful newspaper publisher, the Hornet has lost control, becoming a social crusader far too sure of himself and of his judgment. But when he finally goes too far, an innocent man pays a terrible price–and the legend of the Green Hornet begins its cataclysmic collapse!

I had been a fan of Dynamite‘s updated Green Hornet series kicked off by Kevin Smith. It felt like a nice update to the character and was an entertaining read until recently. The book took a dive in quality and I was a bit bummed. Then I heard a new series was launching with the original team of Britt and Kato and it’d be written by the talented Mark Waid. I was psyched.

Waid is a master writer of the pulp variety. His Daredevil run has been a modern classic and one of the best ever for the character. He’s taken long-standing icons and reinvigorated them, and in this first issue he brings a solid voice that gets the Hornet back to the basics.

This first issue is two-fold. It introduces the Green Hornet to new readers and also sets the character upon his path in a new, but familiar, way for the old fans. It’s a tricky balance and Waid pulls it off. Through a mix of dialogue and thought bubbles/caption boxes he lays out where this Hornet stands and what his mission is. Though I felt like I’ve seen this a bunch, Waid’s voice was new and interesting. It feels fresh and entertaining.

I’m convinced we’ll see some amazing things on Waid’s run. He’s already setting up a character, but most importantly a world, that’ll keep us entertained and engaged. Mark Waid is a master of the pulp genre, but overall he’s a master storyteller.

Garth Ennis’ Red Team #2

RedTeam02-Cov-ChaykinThe Rules: in which our heroes take a further step down a very dangerous road and lay out their battle plan. But not everyone is happy with the unit’s new direction, especially some of the other players in the game…

Garth Ennis, I generally think is a brilliant writer. The man can often make you think and at the same time present over the top violence to the point of satire. Red Team is a serious voice for the writer, about a team of cops who become corrupt and dish out justice on their own terms. Yes, this is a crooked/vigilante cop story, and it’s amazing.

Two issues in and this is gearing up to be one of the best new series of the year. It’s just amazing in every aspect. The presentation stands out to me. Each story is unveiled with both the narrative of the action, but also in an interrogation room. We know this rouge squad of cops goes wrong, we just don’t know when. We’re also presented how they went off the rails from the cops themselves. It’s an amazing presentation and narrative that’s worthy of a television series.

I’m a sucker for cop stories, so that only makes me more excited for this series. We’re two issues in and this is quickly becoming a series I need to immediately read when I get it in my hands.

If you’re a fan of police drama or crooked/rogue cop movies, this comic is a must have. It’s also a perfect comic to hand to people who are new to the entertainment medium.

Pick of the Week – East of West #1

east of westThe things that divide us are stronger than the things that unite us. East of West is a Sci-Fi Western set in a dystopian America where all hope for the future rests in the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse…who just happen to be trying to kill the President of the United States.

A new series from the team of Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta, not only is the concept intriguing but the artwork is pretty cool too. Hickman is a master storyteller who creates epic adventures. Any creator owned series by him, and you can expect to be challenged and forced to think through interesting concepts and philosophical ideas. Usually that’s surrounded by some kick-ass action.

Since it’s announcement this series has been on my radar as one of the top new ones I’ve wanted to read. If it’s like all of Hickman’s past work, we’re in for a hell of a ride.

  • East of West #1 – see above
  • The Massive #10 – Why aren’t you reading the best comic on the market? Brian Wood knocks it out of the park each month with this series.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy #1 – I’ve like the teases and Iron Man in space intrigues me. Brian Michael Bendis has been putting out some great books in Marvel NOW!. I’m expecting no less from this.
  • Red Team #2 – Garth Ennis’ series follows a crooked police unit. The first issue was amazing. The second should be just as solid. Perfect for anyone into police drama.
  • Mark Waid’s Green Hornet #1 – Mark Waid is one of the best writers out there right now. His take on heroes like Daredevil have been amazing. Now imagine that, but with Green Hornet. Yes please!
