ECCC 2016: Ennis Returns to Red Team with Double Tap, Center Mass

Following the critical success of 2014’s Red Team, Garth Ennis and Craig Cermak return to the Manhattan’s mean streets with the elite NYPD narcotics unit in Red Team: Double Tap, Center Mass!

One year after the catastrophic events that ended the first series, Red Team survivors Eddie Mellinger and Trudy Giroux are in the doldrums. Considered a political liability, the two are kept busy on small-time cases by their suspicious NYPD commanders… but a chance encounter in the ghetto gives them a chance to get back in the game. Trouble is, it means going far beyond the law… which is what almost got them killed last time around.

Red Team: Double Tap, Center Mass reunites Garth Ennis with up-and-coming artist Craig Cermak for another nine-issue run of hardboiled crime comics at their finest! Look for the first issue in stores on July 20th!

Eddie Mellinger, Trudy Giroux, Duke Wylie and George Winburn are Red Team: the NYPD’s elite anti-narcotics unit. They’ve taken down one drug lord after another with a careful blend of surveillance, violence and- where necessary manipulation of evidence. But now, driven beyond distraction by the cruel machinations of murderous gangster Clinton Days, the team are resorting to extreme measures- setting them down a path from which there can be no return. As they’re about to discover, doing the wrong thing can be very, very seductive. Writer Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Boys, Crossed) and artist Craig Cermak (Voltron: Year One) present a hard boiled tale of cops on the wrong side of the law- where the simple pull of a trigger is enough to doom victim and killer alike.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

The Bunker #2There are lots of choices each week to choose from as far as comics hitting the shelves. We go through the releases and let you know what we think are your best bets for comics to read.

This week’s top pick is The Bunker. What’s this issue about? Check it out:

Each of the friends must decide their fates, as they’re faced with the first day of the rest of their lives. By the end, lines are drawn between the Believers and the Skeptics, while another shadowy figure from the future is watching them to make sure they all decide ‘correctly.’

Check out what else we think you should give a shot this Wednesday!

Top Pick: The Bunker #2 (Oni Press) – The first issue was a sell-out and had folks buzzing. Oni has announced this book has already sold out at the distributor level. Make sure to grab a copy if you can find one, and if you haven’t, get the first issue too!

Furious #3 (Dark Horse) – The series that looks at fame with a superhero twist continues. This issue just dives in to take on the issue of misogyny.

Hacktivist #3 (BOOM! Studios) – BOOM!’s take on modern activism is entertaining and gets people to think with every issue.

Mind MGMT #20 (Dark Horse) – A great starting spot for the excellent Matt Kindt series.

Pariah #2 (Dark Horse) – This story of genetically modified children has been impressive so far. Where it goes has got be very interested, and at the edge of my seat.

Silver Surfer #1 (Marvel) – Dan Slott’s take on Marvel’s classic character begins here!

Skullkickers #25 (Image Comics) – Jim Zub’s off the rails fantasy adventure continues after a bit of a hiatus.

Transformers: Dark Cybertron Finale (IDW Publishing) – The end to what has been an epic event that has given us so much awesome.

The Walking Dead #124 (Image Comics) – The battle with Negan continues and I expect more fireworks!

The Wake #7 (Vertigo) – Scott Snyder and Sean Phillips’ series has shifted for it’s second volume catapulting us into the future to see what the Earth is like now that the undersea creatures have attacked. It’s a different series, with a different tone, but works so well as a continuation.

Graphic Novel/Trade Paperback Top Pick: The Red Team Vol. 1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Garth Ennis’ crooked cop series is gathered together for this first volume. If you’re a fan of cop tales, this is a must read.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Magnus01-Cov-Hardman-NoDressIt’s a new week for comics and we’re helping you make your way through the numerous releases to narrow it down as to what comics should be a part of your buy pile. Below see what we’ve put together as far as 10 comics (and one trade or graphic novel) you should be checking out!

  • Top Pick: Magnus Robot Fighter #1 (Dynamite) – Magnus is back in Dynamite’s revived Gold Key line of comics. Fred Van Lente takes the reigns as writer for this updated take on the classic character. So far, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, the first release of the line, has been excellent and we expect this to be the same.
  • Avengers Undercover #1 – Marvel’s youngest heroes are back in this continuation of Avengers Arena. We’ll see how Arcade’s torture has changed them.
  • Death Sentence #6 – Titan Comics’ series has been over the top fun. It involves an STD that gives you super powers but kills you in 6 months.
  • The Fox #5 – Archie has put together some super hero fun that can be enjoyed by everyone.
  • Garth Ennis’ Red Team #7 – It’s been a while since the last issue, but this series about crooked cops is so good.
  • Hawkeye #17 – One of the best series on the market. It should be on everyone’s list.
  • Liberator: Earth Crisis #1 – The animal rights series is back, this time with the help from the band Earth Crisis.
  • The Returning #1 – BOOM!’s latest horror series has to deal with near death experiences and sounds too interesting to not check out.
  • Stray Bullets: The Killers #1 – The acclaimed series is back with a new volume.
  • Superior Foes of Spider-Man #9 – I love this series. One of my favorite debuts of 2013. The focus on Spider-Man’s C list villains is hilarious and beyond entertaining.

Pick(s) of the Week: Manifest Destiny #1 and many more

manifestdest01_coverImage Comics has been on a roll with solid debut series and this week is no exception with two different releases from the publisher. Out of the two though, it’s Manifest Destiny that sticks out with it’s weird history take on the explorers Lewis and Clark.

In 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark set out on an expedition to explore the uncharted American frontier. This is the story of what they discovered lurking in the wilds…

Skybound’s newest original series unveils the monsters of the western frontier in the adventure of a lifetime by writer Chris Dingess and up-and-coming artist Matthew Roberts.

Having read the first issue, it’s worth checking out.

Check out below for the rest of our picks!

Andrew:

Top Pick: Manifest Destiny #1 (Image Comics/Skybound) – I’ve been awaiting this twisted Lewis and Clark series for awhile now. In a retelling of the familiar American frontier story, our adventurous heroes face more than just poison ivy and brown bears…

Afterlife with Archie #2 (Archie Comics) – I’ve never been a fan of Archie Comics…but this series is phenomenal. Archie finally treats adult readers like adults and delivers a quality horror series. If you won’t take my word for it, check out Brett’s review of the first issue.

Batman #25 (DC) – After donning the cape and cowl, Bruce Wayne is learning what he must become to protect Gotham as the Zero Year arc continues. This new take on Batman’s origin story (and of his enemies) is a great read.

The Other Dead #3 (IDW Publishing) – I know I’ve been out of the loop lately, but how am I just hearing about this? Mankind versus a global zombie animal infection? Yes please.

Umbral #1 (Image Comics) – The first issue of another one of Image Comics’ new fall series looks like an interesting fantasy-esque read. Having just read and reviewed Criminal Macabre, I’m digging Christopher Mitten’s illustrations.

Brett:

Top Pick: Afterlife With Archie #2 ( Archie Comics) – The first issue blew me away and out of everything coming out this week, where Archie comics allows this series to go is the most interesting thing to me. The first issue just met every expectation I had and I expect no less from the second.

Garth Ennis’ Red Team #6 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I love a good crooked cop story and this is it. Just a great comic that I’d love to see on the small screen. The descent of this cop squad into crime and questionable activities has been gripping so far.

Manifest Destiny #1 (Image Comics) – You can read above as to why this makes the list.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #5 ( Marvel Comics) – Writer Nick Spencer has taken this group of C-list villains and made them interesting and sympathetic. I want more of this!

Unity #1 (Valiant Entertainment) – Valiant continues to connect the dots of their various series and a lot of that is happening here. The first issue kicks in the doors with an action filled debut.

Top TPB/Graphic Novel: Bandette HC Vol. 1 (Monkeybrain/Dark Horse) – The digital series gets collected and printed courtesy of Dark Horse and you now have no excuse to not read this fantastic digital first comic.

Scott:

Top Pick: Batman #25 (DC) – The last issue was over sized, gorgeous (particularly the coloring), and totally changed the status quo in Gotham City. So far I’m loving how expansive Zero Year is, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Rocket Girl #2 (Image Comics) – The debut was a little inconsistent, but the premise has promise (see what I did there?), and I love Amy Reeder’s art. I’m willing to give this series some time to find its feet.

Savage Wolverine #11 (Marvel Comics) – This one’s a bit of a wild card. I’ve heard that Jock’s story line has been a little meandering, but I adore his art and on this book its been expansive and appropriately otherworldly (as it’s a Wolverine story set on another planet). And those covers, man . . . Wow.

Umbral #1 (Image Comics) – This series comes from Antony Johnston and Christopher Mitten, and while I’ve never read any of Wasteland I hear its excellent, so I’m looking forward to their new project. Plus, it’s horror, which is one of my favorite comic genres.

A close encounter with one of their own leaves Red Team on uncertain ground, while Eddie faces problems at home.  So no one’s quite ready when a very bad night in the ghetto catapults our heroes into a tense situation beyond their wildest nightmares…

Pick(s) of the Week: The Wake #4 and so Much More

The Wake #4 coverIn a solid week of comic book releases this comic made it on three of our four lists and for those three, it was on the top spot for each. The Wake, is Scott Snyder and  Sean Murphy‘s series from Vertigo. To say it’s good is an understatement.

Trapped…drowning…dying…could things get worse for Doctor Lee Archer and her team? Yes, they could. Much worse, in fact. Turns out the shocking discovery of the creature was only the beginning.

A mix of science fiction. A mix of horror. This series is a tense thriller that’s been solid with each and every issue. Vertigo’s hit new series continues and you should be reading it!

Check out the rest of our picks below.

Andrew:

Top Pick: The Wake #4 (Vertigo) – I don’t know how many times I checked the Internet to make sure this series hadn’t ended while I wasn’t paying attention. I still can’t tell which is better, Snyder’s story or Murphy’s illustrations.

Criminal Macabre: The Eyes of Frankenstein #1 (Dark Horse) – After Steve Niles’ phenomenal but emotionally heavy Breath of Bones, it is great to see him back doing what he does best…writing horror.

East of West #6 (Image) – If an issue of this series is an upcoming release it will always be in my top picks. Hickman and Dragotta kill it every month with their post apocalyptic dystopian world.

King Conan The Hour of the Dragon #5 (Dark Horse) – Fantastic story and artwork. I met writer Tim Truman at the Baltimore Comic-Con and had a blast talking about his passion for scribing the barbarian.

Mouse Guard Legends of the Guard Vol. 2 #3 (Archaia) – I have a ways to go before catching up to this issue, but I’m going to list it anyways. Redwall for adults, fantastic

Brett:

Top Pick: The Wake #4 (Vertigo) – I think I summed it up above, but this series has been amazing with each and every issue. Solid story and art in each release.

Garth Ennis’ Red Team #5 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I love a good cop thriller and this is one charting the fall of a team of cops who take the law into their own hands.

Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard Vol. 2 #3 (Archaia) – Mouse Guard is an amazing series mixing fantasy with cute mice. I’m not a fan of fantasy, but I’m a fan of this series which is great for kids and adults.

Powerpuff Girls #1 (IDW Publishing) – How can you not include the first issue of the series that takes the popular cartoon and launches it in comics? I wasn’t a die-hard fan of the cartoon, but the episodes I did watch were entertaining enough that I’m really looking forward to checking this series out.

Punisher: Trial of the Punisher #1 (Marvel) – How is there not an ongoing Punisher series going on? Really Marvel!?

Scott:

Top Pick: The Wake #4 (Vertigo) – Last issue ended on a huge, game-changing cliffhanger, and I’m so excited to see it resolve itself. Or maybe it won’t! Either way, it’s going to be a great comic.

Fatale #17 (Image) – Brubaker’s and Phillip’s crime story keeps getting darker and darker, just the way a noir should. I believe this issue has the customary mid-arc interlude, and I’m interested in visiting Nicolas Lash in the modern day.

Saga #14 (Image) – What more can someone even say about this comic? Everything about it is breathtaking, and I’m just so giddy that it’s finally coming out. Feels like it’s been forever.

Sex Criminals #1 (Image) – Matt Fraction has been turning out some solid comics recently, and I hear that this book is like a romantic comedy with heists. Come on. Comedy, heists, and Matt Fraction. Sold.

Sean:

Top Pick: Saga #14 (Image) – I can never wait to get the next Saga issue in my hands!

Aquaman #23.2 Ocean Master (DC Comics) – While Ocean Master is kind of a blase villain, he’s played a major part in New 52 Arthur’s life, and DC is kicking ass with Aquaman all around, so you’d be dead wrong to ignore this.

Batman #23.4 Bane (DC Comics) – Bane’s awesome, so I can’t wait to give this a shot.

Planet of the Apes Giant #1 (one-shot) (BOOM! Studios) – BOOM!’s Planet of the Apes comics are fantastic, despite being rarely discussed. Seriously, try ’em out!

Punisher: Trial of the Punisher #1 (Marvel) – sort of reminiscent of Marvel’s “Trial of Spider-man” event from the 1990s, but this certainly looks like a great Punisher miniseries, and a great place to hop on if you’re not a Punisher fan.

Red Team’s latest target could land them in very hot water, protected as he is from on high. Meanwhile, Trudy’s late night encounter with an amorous newcomer spells trouble of a different kind- the kind that could finish the entire team for good.
