Review – Zenescope’s Irresistible #1 to 4

Allen Keeg was your average middle age heart broken sap who just went through the worst break up in his life. That was a year ago. Since then Allen’s been having trouble getting back into the swing of things. But all that’s about to change. When Allen saves an old woman from being mugged he will be given an amazing supernatural ability that will change his whole life. But is the gift of being irresistible to every woman he meets a gift or a dreadful curse.

Comic books are often thought of as power fantasies for grown men who haven’t escaped adolescent. They’re misogynistic. They’re wish fulfillment. This series takes all of that and embraces it in a way. So many guys have wondered what it’d be like to be able to sleep with any girl they wanted. To have every girl attracted to them. This series takes that idea, and takes it to the extreme.

Sticking with the fairy tale fantasy of other Zenescope series, we get the whole backstory of the curse and where it came from, to me the weakest part of the series. The most interesting to me is the main character Allen and his dealing with this new world and his new status.

There’s some issues I had with the mini-series, it was actually too short! This could easily have been a maxi-series and I think it being limited to four issues actually limits the break down of Allen. It’d of been nice to see him struggle more with this situation and his pining for his ex-girlfriend. Instead the story is a bit condensed which works against it.

This limited series is absolutely for adults and for something different, definitely worth checking out.

Zenescope’s Fly Returns With The Fall

Zenescope‘s Fly was a comic book series that flew under the radar and didn’t quite find the audience it deserved. The series was similar to The Cape in that both series explored the corruption of the individual by power, in this case the ability to fly and this series was a nice allegory about addiction. Well, now you’ve got a heads up warning that the series is back with a sequel, Fly: The Fall, set for an October release. Written by creator Raven Gregory, the series includes cover art for issue #1 by David Mack, Ale Garza and Darick Robertson.  Interior artwork will be handled by Robert Gill.

Fly: The Fall continues soon after the life-shattering events of the last volume.  Following the death if his ex-girlfriend, Eddie is now a broken man set on a path of self-destruction from which he may not return.  Meanwhile Francis sets his game-plan in motion to destroy the man who killed is father.  Set in a world where the super-heroes aren’t really heroes at all… How far would you go to Fly?

Fly: The Fall #1 hits shelves in October and is available for order in this month’s Diamond Previews.

Zenescope to Publish Sleepy Hollow

Zenescope Entertainment is re-inventing another classic tale the story of Sleepy Hollow. The comic is scheduled for an October release date.  The mini-series is written by Dan Wickline with story by Zenescope’s Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco and Raven Gregory.  Cover art for issue #1 is by Marat Mychaels and Matt Triano, and interior artwork for the series will be handled by Allan Otero.

Zenescope Entertainment’s Sleepy Hollow takes place on campus of the fictional Tarrytown University in upstate New York.  The story of the headless horseman has become something of myth and legend but it’s a legend that is about to become all too real when a college prank goes deadly wrong.  Those responsible will learn the truth behind the legend as the Headless Horseman returns to exact a disturbing revenge that none will ever forget.

Sleepy Hollow #1 hits shelves in October in time for Halloween and is available for order in this month’s Diamond Previews.

Zenescope’s Alice In Wonderland #1 Sells Out

Official Press Release

ZENECOPE’S ALICE IN WONDERLAND #1 SELLS OUT

Zenescope Entertainment is reporting that the #1 issue of new comic book title Alice in Wonderland has sold out through Diamond Comic Distributors. Further, the #1 issue has sold through the 19,000 initial printing on the first day of its release.  At this time there are no plans to do a second printing of the book but Zenescope has made the comic book available for digital download immediately through the Comixology and Zenescope Apps and can be purchased there.

Zenescope’s Alice in Wonderland is a new mini-series featuring Alice Liddle as she journeys through the insanity-filled realm of Wonderland.  Zenescope first visited the mythology of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland back in 2007 with the breakout hit Return To Wonderland.  The indie comic book publisher has since released multiple mini-series that re-imagine Lewis Carroll’s classic story as a present day horror and fantasy tale.

“To sell out of a large print run this quickly is stunning.” said Zenescope Editor-in-Chief Ralph Tedesco. “It’s a great feeling to have such a loyal and continually growing fan base that responds so well to our re-imagining of Wonderland.  The good news is that there’s more of it to come.”

“We’ve been planning to tell this story for a long time and it seems that our fans have been patiently waiting for it.  It’s awesome to see this kind of response”, says series writer Raven Gregory.

Zenescope’s Alice in Wonderland is being written by Raven Gregory and features interior artwork and coloring by Robert Gill and Jason Embury. This first issue features cover art by Artgerm, Ebas, and Nei Ruffino. The first issue has also been released digitally on the same day as the printed version and is available through the Zenescope and Comixology Apps.

Zenescope Entertainment Announces The Waking: Dreams End

ZENESCOPE ANNOUNCES “The Waking: Dreams End”

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans to release a follow up to their hit comic book series, The Waking, first published by the company in 2010.  The new series, entitled The Waking: Dreams End, is written by Raven Gregory (FLY, Return To Wonderland) with interior art by Novo Malgapo (Grimm Fairy Tales).

In 2010, The Waking redefined zombie mythology and stood out as a unique offering in a crowded genre.  The Waking: Dreams End picks up years after the original events took place.  Murder has become practically extinct in a world armed with the knowledge that those who are killed will return from the dead to take the lives of their killers.  But within this new world comes a new kind of killer and an original breed of horror will be born.

“Several months after the release of The Waking, I had a splinter of an idea that just grew and grew over the course of the past year. Says Writer Raven Gregory, I knew I needed to follow up the original story and set it in a brand new world.  In The Waking, we established all the rules but in Dreams End, we find someone who has found a way to break those rules. And now the stakes are raised to a higher level and it’s really going to mess with fan’s minds.”

The original series received much critical acclaim and was praised by the Philadelphia Daily News as well as many comic book news websites for its unique blend of horror, suspense and comedy and its original take on the zombie mythos.

The Waking: Dreams End #1 hits shelves in late April and is currently available for order through Diamond Previews.  Go to Zenescope’s website at www.zenescope.com and Facebook page www.facebook.com/Zenescope for more information.

Zenescope Review – Fly #1 to #4

I’m a bit all over when it comes to my thoughts of the comics produced by Zenescope (generally they’re not my cup of tea), but Fly stands out from their crowd.  The comic is an allegory about addiction.  It revolves around three friends who as kids take a drug called Fly which gains them powers such as flight (shocker with a title like that).

Through flashbacks, we’re caught up through the four issues, teasing out a bit at a time.  We’re slowly seeing the reveal as to how some became full addicts to the drug and others clean.  It’s interesting and unique from where it comes from.

Usually with super hero comics you’re dealt with dynamics between the hero and bad guy and how their powers may corrupt them, but rarely is it compared to what an addict goes through.  It really does work, especially with how these folks have gained their powers.

Three types of addicts are here, the full blown one out of control and there’s no coming back.  There’s the one who’s clean and overcome the day to day addiction and the third is that person in between struggling between what they used to do and attempting to turn their life around and lead a clean, good life.

The story without the addiction aspect of it is still solid with power run amok.  If you’ve never read a Zenescope comic before, this is a perfect one to start with.  It stands out from the crowd as something different and a comic that deserves a bigger audience.

Scores below are for all four issues which have been consistent in quality.
