Review: Revenge of Wonderland

Revenge of Wonderland

Recently, I went back home to the place where my father was from and where I was raised for a portion of my adolescent years. The thing is, the time between when I was last there and when I recently went had been 30 years. As with most places and people you have not seen in a while, it’s not quite the same. In some instances, it definitely is completely different and when you realize that, is when you typically grasp that you have changed as well.

I know certainly this is what I think of when I go back home to New York. I loved my upbringing, my friends, and my family, but really cannot see living there again. What happens when a place you love, is not what you remembered? In the first volume of Revenge Of Wonderland we find out what happens to a place which has turned into the total opposite of what it was originally conceived as.

WE meet Callie and Violet Liddle, a mother and daughter who share more than blood as Violet suffered a similar strange ordeal as her mother, Callie. As Callie ruled as the White Queen in Wonderland for many years until an uneasy truce made her step down. As things change, so has Wonderland, and so has that truce, which has forced the Liddles to come back to bout for the land they once fought for. As we catch up with the Liddles, enjoying their normal lives back on Earth. As Callie meets an obsessive fangirl of her books, whose fixation becomes dangerous for all, opening a door back to Wonderland and trouble headed the Liddles way, in the form of the Duchess. As there is even more trouble as mysterious murders, sightings of large purple cats and child disappearances causes Violet to investigate what is causing all these things and what is their connection to Wonderland. This catches the Duchess’s attention, leading her to unleash the Clubs, her dangerous faceless underlings, who take Violet, which leads Callie back to Wonderland to save her daughter. As we find about the Duchess and how became who she was, as she was not always evil. We also find out about our other villain, one even more insidious, Mr.Monarch, a serial killer who has been trapping members of his community one by one. By book’s end, Callie and Violet battle the Duchess, but eventually win her over by showing how love is stronger than hate, and though their lives go back to normal fr now, a worst foe has been awakened.

Overall, an interesting and well told story that injects the reader in to this magical world and does alternate universes right. The story by Raven Gregory is lavish, comprehensive, and action packed. The art by the creative team is utterly elegant and intense. Altogether, an excellent story which more comic book fans should know.

SDCC 2018: Zenescope To Premiere Revenge of Wonderland

After a three year hiatus, Zenescope’s smash hit series returns with Revenge of Wonderland. The first issue will be released at San Diego Comic Con and hit shelves at comic book retailer shops in late July. Zenescope’s Wonderland series became a breakout sensation for the young publishing house back in 2007 with its original title: Return to Wonderland. The company went on to publish several sequels and prequels over the following eight years. In 2012, Zenescope debuted Alice in Wonderland which sold out of the initial 20,000 copy print run within the first week of its release.

Revenge of Wonderland is a twisted tale of love, loss and vengeance. The story follows “The Duchess” as she rises to power within the now abandoned dimension of Wonderland and begins to fill it with brand new inhabitants of her own twisted design. But the Duchess’s disturbing creations will force Calie Liddle – and her daughter, Violet – back into Wonderland to confront a brand new horror that neither is prepared to face. Raven Gregory returns to write the series based on a story by Zenescope’s Ralph Tedesco, Joe Brusha, and Dave Franchini. Artist Allan Otero will illustrate the six part mini-series.

Zenescope will also be launching a Revenge of Wonderland marketing campaign with collectible sticker art prints. The company will be giving hints out where to collect the stickers up until the series release. On the series release date, fans can collect the final sticker and can assemble the art print with the stickers they have collected. The first fan to send a full image of the art print will be drawn into Zenescope’s next Wonderland series and get free tickets to attend any comic con on Zenescope’s 2019 show schedule.

Raven Gregory is Back with Widow’s Web

Raven Gregory and Autumn Ivy‘s long awaited new creator owned series, Widow’s Web, will be debuting next month at Phoenix Fanfest Dec 12-14. Gregory, Ivy, penciler Ian Snyder, and cover artist Nei Ruffino will all be at the convention.

Set in a world that is not our own, the story follows Dahlia White, an unassuming bartender living in the strange yet familiar Tcesni City, where she attempts to balance her normal — and sometimes not so normal — life with the horrifying secret of who and what she really is. A balance that is thrown into absolute chaos when a down-on-his-luck guy, Pterra Atrus, walks through her door and catches her eye, turning her already crazy world upside down. A world where not everything or everyone is what they seem.

Where the fairy tale of boy meets girl ends, and the horror begins.

Widow’s Web #0 will feature two separate covers exclusive to the show, an Exclusive Premium Preview Edition limited to 150 and an Extinction Sketch Edition limited to 50, each with a free 11×17 Mike Krome and Ula Moś print, and will take  pre-orders at www.theravengregory.com (note: Print available to show attendees only while supplies last.

Zenescope Follows Alice and Calie Down the Rabbit Hole for new Trilogy

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans for a new Wonderland prequel mini-series entitled Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole. The new five issue series will be penned by Wonderland writer and co-creator Raven Gregory and Zenescope’s Robyn Hood scribe, Pat Shand.

This new series takes readers back to the original mini-series, Return to Wonderland, which was first published in 2007.  Zenescope’s Down the Rabbit Hole will fill in the blanks surrounding Calie’s first journey into the realm of madness.  This time, readers will see things from other family members’ perspectives as Calie takes her first, life-altering, journey into Wonderland.

As was announced in July 2012, Zenescope’s original Wonderland trilogy was purchased by Lionsgate TV and is being produced by Smallville’s Brian Robbins to be adapted as a live-action television series.  This new mini-series will no doubt allow for additional story-lines and appease the die-hard Wonderland fans who can now delve deeper into the rich mythology that creators Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco and Raven Gregory have been publishing for the past six years.

Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole will be available for preorder on the March edition of Diamond Previews or for preorder through Zenescope’s official web store.

Zenescope Announces Their 2013 Convention Schedule and Plans

Zenescope Entertainment has released its convention schedule for 2013 which covers a total of 25 different conventions and cities, including two visits abroad in both Canada and the United Kingdom. It’s the most comprehensive convention schedule for the company to date.  Zenescope’s writers, creators and artists such as Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco, Raven Gregory, Anthony Spay, Eric Basaldua, Pat Shand and many others are expected to be present throughout many of the company’s convention stops.

Over the past several years, Zenescope has maintained original and sought after convention exclusive covers. And this year the company has raised the bar as it puts the lovely Zenescope ladies to work with its “Work Force” theme for 2013. Eric Basaldua, Jamie Tyndall, Anthony Spay, Elias Chatzoudis, Franchesco and other top industry talent will take turns portraying Zenescope’s iconic and strong-willed female characters in a variety of blue and white collar work environments in the pinup style that has elevated Zenescope’s limited edition exclusives to be must-have collectibles.

Further, Zenescope has announced its new line of “Black Diamond” exclusive variants. These rare covers are intended to reward the hardcore collectors and fans who end up collecting all of them.

The first Black Diamond cover made its debut in January at Amazing Arizona Comic Con and future Black Diamonds will debut at various, random conventions throughout 2013. However, a specific release schedule and certain details about the covers are still being kept under wraps. Those who miss their opportunity to purchase these covers at the conventions can also look for them on Zenescope’s official web store.

Kickstarter Spotlight – You Are Not Alone, The Anti-Bullying Graphic Novel

yanabuttonWhat good is having the ability to publish and reach people with our stories if we can’t put it to use in a more beneficial way?

Raven Gregory, Dirk Manning, Gail Simone and nearly 50 small press writers have come together to create the first original graphic novel from GrayHaven Comics: You Are Not Alone.

We originally covered this story in late December.

To those who have suffered in silence facing abuse because of the color of your skin, sexual orientation, weight or interests. To those who are depressed and feel there is no place left to turn…You are not Alone.

In an effort to get this project into as many hands as possible, as easily as possible, GrayHaven Comics has launched a Kickstarter to help raise funds for printing this 150 plus page book with the goal being to give them away at schools and youth organizations for Free.

Best Pledge: Give as much as you can, this is for a good cause.

Risk: LOW – The GrayHaven team has run numerous Kickstarter projects and come through as promised. Very professional in how they use it and keep folks updated.

Review – Zenescope’s Irresistible #1 to 4

Allen Keeg was your average middle age heart broken sap who just went through the worst break up in his life. That was a year ago. Since then Allen’s been having trouble getting back into the swing of things. But all that’s about to change. When Allen saves an old woman from being mugged he will be given an amazing supernatural ability that will change his whole life. But is the gift of being irresistible to every woman he meets a gift or a dreadful curse.

Comic books are often thought of as power fantasies for grown men who haven’t escaped adolescent. They’re misogynistic. They’re wish fulfillment. This series takes all of that and embraces it in a way. So many guys have wondered what it’d be like to be able to sleep with any girl they wanted. To have every girl attracted to them. This series takes that idea, and takes it to the extreme.

Sticking with the fairy tale fantasy of other Zenescope series, we get the whole backstory of the curse and where it came from, to me the weakest part of the series. The most interesting to me is the main character Allen and his dealing with this new world and his new status.

There’s some issues I had with the mini-series, it was actually too short! This could easily have been a maxi-series and I think it being limited to four issues actually limits the break down of Allen. It’d of been nice to see him struggle more with this situation and his pining for his ex-girlfriend. Instead the story is a bit condensed which works against it.

This limited series is absolutely for adults and for something different, definitely worth checking out.

Zenescope’s Fly Returns With The Fall

Zenescope‘s Fly was a comic book series that flew under the radar and didn’t quite find the audience it deserved. The series was similar to The Cape in that both series explored the corruption of the individual by power, in this case the ability to fly and this series was a nice allegory about addiction. Well, now you’ve got a heads up warning that the series is back with a sequel, Fly: The Fall, set for an October release. Written by creator Raven Gregory, the series includes cover art for issue #1 by David Mack, Ale Garza and Darick Robertson.  Interior artwork will be handled by Robert Gill.

Fly: The Fall continues soon after the life-shattering events of the last volume.  Following the death if his ex-girlfriend, Eddie is now a broken man set on a path of self-destruction from which he may not return.  Meanwhile Francis sets his game-plan in motion to destroy the man who killed is father.  Set in a world where the super-heroes aren’t really heroes at all… How far would you go to Fly?

Fly: The Fall #1 hits shelves in October and is available for order in this month’s Diamond Previews.
