Recap: Crisis on Infinite Earths 2 – Batwoman

CRS_S5__8x12_300dpi

When we last saw our band of heroes, it was on some pretty depressing terms and, in keeping the mood we next see Batwoman, Kara, and Sara sharing shots in Oliver’s memory in Central City. The ladies lament over what the next steps should be just in time for Harbinger to show up as the Monitor is explaining to Atom that they’re going to need the Waverunner, more specifically his lab to save the multiverse. Harbinger lets them know they don’t need to fight because there are loads of Waverunners across loads of multiverses and she heads to Earth 74 where she meets their Rory, who is enjoying his solace and trying to get his writer on. She convinces Rory to join the fight, by offering him all the beer he can drink and of course, he’s all in.

While the Monitor explains the concept of Paragons and tells Barry that he found he has a once thought destroyed, but taken from the timeline after Oliver’s death, copy of the Book of Destiny. The seven paragons are plan B, in case all else fails and he only knows where to find four out of the seven. He names Kara, the paragon of hope, Sara, the paragon of destiny,  a second Kryptonian, the paragon of truth,  and Bat of the Future, the paragon of courage. He sends Batwoman on a quest to find the Dark Knight in Earth 99 so that she can become the paragon she is meant to be.

While Batwoman readies for her quest the Monitor shows up with Lex Luthor causing Kara to opt-out on this whole team because it’s a bit unfair that he’s alive and billions of innocent people are dead. While Batwoman convinces Kara to come with her to find Bruce, Lex does what Lex does and steals the Book of Destiny so he can kill Superman. When Lila discovers what Lex has done, she fills Monitor in and he isn’t shocked, he says it’s a part of his plan leaving Lila speechless and worried.

On Earth 99 Batwoman and Kara head to the manor, where Bruce is chilling with a super ripped Luke and what looks like a robotic Bruce. On another Earth Lois and Clark learn that Lex is jumping from Earth to Earth killing off Superman and back on Earth 1,  Mia, Barry, and Sara are consulting with Constantine to find an Earth with a functioning Lazarus pit to bring back Oliver.  In Earth 167 on Smallville, we see the OG Clark from Smallville and Lex shows up to kill him but, not before Lois and Earth 38, Clark shows up Iris with to warn him. But, it’s all for naught because Clark Kent gave up his powers in on that Earth so that he could raise a normal family with Lois, who is played by Smallville’s Lois, which makes it kind of good that Earth 38’s Clark was zapped away because that would have been awkward.

BWN108A_0116b2

Bruce is no longer a hero because, when Kate died it killed his hope and made him cower into the shadows, leaving Kate to try and get him back in the game. On another Earth, we see Clark played by Atom who was Clark in the movie-making everything super geek out worthy. Back on 99 Kara is getting the grand tour and learns that this Batman keeps trophies like a serial killer and the reason he’s in the suit is that he killed that Earth’s Superman.  Back on the Earth where Atom is Superman,  one who lost everything and the paragon they were looking for, he teams up with Earth 38’s Superman to take on Lex who uses the book to make them kill each other. While they fight it out, Iris and Lois knock Lex out and take control of the book so they can fix things but, it takes Lois pulling at his heartstrings to snap him out of it.

BWN108d_0045b3

On Earth 18 Mia, Constantine, and Sara find a Lazarus pit and Mia seems determined to bring Oliver back but, Jonah Hex shows up to stop them and Sara and Mia end up having to fight him off while Barry and Constantine go to retrieve Oliver.  Back on Earth 99, Bruce refuses to put on the suit and Kara shows up to warn Batwoman about the Bruce of this Earth on her super suit, which makes him pull out the kryptonite and attack her. Kate stands up to Bruce and he ends up getting electrocuted, killing him almost instantly and with his last breath, he tells her there is no hope.

Back on the ship, Ray’s machine proves that Batwoman is the paragon of courage causing her to need a drink, which Kara is happy to provide, along with one of her signature pep talks and to seal the deal, she pulls out a picture of Kate and her sister. We also learn that Kate kept a little it on Kryptonite, which may or may not be a good thing because Kara wants to use the book to bring back their Earth. Back at the Lazarus pit, Constantine can’t get past the anti-matter to bring Oliver’s soul back. And, the Anti-Monitor shows up on the ship to turn Harbinger over to the dark side.

Recap: Crisis on Infinite Earths : Part One – Supergirl

CRS_S5__8x12_300dpi.jpg

So it begins….

Crisis on Infinite Earths” starts out explaining the Infinitube, multiverses and the age of heroes, the Champions of the Multiverse. It kicks off with a montage about the heroes coming together across multiple multiverses and a voiceover about the coming big ad, coming to end all of the worlds. If that wasn’t enough to pack into the first three minutes of episode one, we got a whole scaredy-cat dragon that Supergirl has to talk down to gilla monster size to bring home. There are earthquakes in National City, a stressed-out speed talking Brainiac and a tidy little back story on the Monitor and his previous meddling antics and the Anti-Monitor.

SPG509b_0043r

While Kara and her band of do-gooders try and formulate a plan, they learn that the big bads’ trajectory is headed straight for is headed for Argo City, which means Superman, Lois and Kara’s mom are all in danger. Kara sends a hologram to Clark, Lois, and their new baby to warn them of the danger and Kara’s mom (aka OG Lois from Smallville) helps the new parents to send their bundle of joy away from the imminent destruction in the same way that he was sent to earth, leaving Kara to mourn the loss of her entire Kryptonian family.

SPG509a_0098r

On another Earth, the Green Arrow is having a chat with his daughter, Mia about the end of his reign as the Green Arrow when Lila shows up to warn him that the Crisis has begun. Meanwhile, Barry Allen loses communication with his team when he is visited by Lila, who tells him the Monitor sent her to get him and she goes by Harbinger now. On another earth, Batwoman is kicking ass and taking names on her quest to find her rogue, mad as a hatter sister Alice when Harbinger snaps her up.  Atom and Sara are getting their trivia on, when they miss out on the winning question because they messed up history when Lila shows up.  Everyone (except for the Legends and the Flash)  end up back at the DOJ where they learn about the anti matter-wave sweeping across the multiverse destroying everything in its path and Earth 38 is where the Monitor wants them to fight back before every universe is destroyed. A quantum tower goes up, seemingly out of nowhere with the sole purpose of slowing the inevitable down.

SPG509b_0123r

While Atom and Brainiac get nerdy with it, Lila tells the assembled team what’s at stake while Lois, Sara, and Brainiac volunteer as a tribute on a mission to find Superbaby’s missing pod, that’s on Earth 16. J’onn J’onzz goes to gather every alien he can find to fight to save Earth 38 while Alex coordinates the effort with the president to get everyone to Earth 1, and they come to the conclusion that they need Lena Luthor’s help to get everyone off the current earth. Kara tries to get Clark’s head back in the game while he feels sorry for not saving his aunt and not being on the mission to save his son. In typical Kara fashion, she gives him a pep talk and shares some of her hope with her and explains where she gets the strength to be so positive. In one of the sappier moments of the episode, she explains that as long as they keep fighting Krypton’s spirit is alive.

SPG509b_0207r

The Green Arrow goes off to find Barry and leaves Mia with a fancy new female fitted Green Arrow suit, the mantle is now hers. When the OG Arrow rocking his old suit he calls out to the Monitor, who promised him that if he died, then Barry could live but, now the Monitor is changing the rules and refuses to give him a straight answer so that they are better prepared.

Alex goes to talk to Lena and lets her know what’s going on and ask for her help but, Lena doesn’t make it easy and is still refusing to accept any responsibility for her actions. She agrees to help but, not without spewing her distrust and hate of all of her former friends.  On one Earth part of the team is trying to stop the big bad and end Lila’s army and on another Sara, Lois and Brainy are trying to find baby Johnathan who is under Oliver’s protection.

SPG509c_0093r

While Mia, the Green Arrow, Batwoman and Atom head in to meet (and hopefully stop) the army the Anti-Monitor has sent to take down the Quantum Tower, Supergirl, Superman and the Flash show up to help hold down the fort.  Lena & Alex try and figure out a way to open up a portal without incinerating anyone during transport and J’onn J’onzz holds a ship steady, ready and waiting to beam people out of danger. On another Earth Sara and another Oliver have a heart to heart and he learns of the happiness that he has in Sara’s Earth, Brainiac interrupts the heart to heart to let them know they need to leave or they can’t go back to the fight, leaving that world Oliver to a lonely existence where everyone he loves is dead.

Back on Earth 38, Supergirl and Superman decide to use their solar power to provide energy to the solar panels on the tower to give the people of their Earth a chance to survive and let the portal open. With every team member, Lila assembled they fight off the shadow demons to give them time to escape which seems noble except, that wasn’t part of the Monitor’s plan and he starts zapping them to another Earth to be ready for the next fight, all except for Oliver who attacks the Monitor rendering him helpless for bit so that he can continue shooting his arrows at the Shadow Monsters to allow more people time to escape but, in the process after saving over a billion people he is mortally wounded.

SPG509c_0128r

The Monitor brings him to Star City in Earth 1 so that the rest of his friends can say goodbye. As he dies, Nash shows up and explains that he let the Anti-Monitor out and Oliver says his farewell to Mia, telling her to find her mother and tell her he loves her. He also tells Kara and Barry that they are his friends and he died so that they could live and fight. As the episode comes to a close, Nash announces that the multiverse is doomed.

Recap: DC’S Legend’s of Tomorrow S4E16 – “Hey, World!”

LGN416a_0081b2

The season finale of DC’s Legends Hey, World! starts off with all the rescued magical creatures that were being held captive by the Time Bureau roaming free on the Wave Rider. Nora in full fairy godmother regalia is roaming hell trying to rescue a tortured Constantine while Charlie is forced to let a monster loose during a Senate hearing to boost Neron’s app downloads and, grade school aged Zari is living her best, bully-free life as the proud owner of a baby dragon.

LGN416a_0156b

Thanks to a newly rescued Charlie the team learns that Neron has changed his end game and plans on using human fear, instead of the apps collected from his soul-sucking app to break his army out of hell. In an attempt to usurp Neron’s power grab and get back Atom’s soul Constantine and Nora seek out the one that got away and gets her to join forces with them to take Neron down.

LGN416a_0383b

While Gary helps Mona take care of the ravenous magical creature the rest of the team tries to figure out a way to defeat fear itself. Kid Zari’s dragon video starts getting more hits on the internet than the fearmongering does give the team the idea of bringing Heyworld to life. Astrid uses Constantine as a way to break out Roy’s soul coin so they can save him and Astrid uses the chance to rob the vault of all the soul coins she can carry. While running simulations Gideon discovers that if they build Heyworld, Zari’s parent survive and she never becomes a Legend and she gets her family back while Sara figures out a way that she doesn’t get separated from the Legends or Nate. Constantine and Nora show up to collect Ray but, since he’s such a ray of sunshine, he has managed to make friends with his torturer, and former nemesis, and has been playing giant Jenga and living his best fun-filled life in the pits of hell.

LGN416a_0292br

As part of the marketing plan, half of the  Legends dress up as other DC heroes for a commercial to get people to come to Heyworld , Charlie and Nora try and rally the ships current monster residents to come out and help by showing the more “human” aspects of themselves. With Ray’s soul coin collected and Constantine free they return with Nora to the ship and fill Sara and Nate in on a plan B to get Ray back that would have grave consequences for Nate. Using Rory’s magical book,  Nate and Zari have a touching moment before bringing Heyworld to life.

LGN416a_0027b

With Heyworld open, and people showing up in their superhero finest, the bait, and switch of magical beings for superheroes. Their stage show gets a little violent when a dragon shows up on Nero’s orders to stop the show. A fight breaks out between Sara and the with formerly known as the fairy godmother and when the dragon sets up to kill Sara, little  Zari shows up and commands him to dance and when Tabitha tries to attack her the dragon decides Neron’s love is a tasty snack. Neron in retaliation opens up the portal and releases his hordes. In an effort to save the team and the world, Nate and Constantine switch bodies so when Neron kills Nate in his Constantine suit, the deal becomes null and void and while Nate is dead, Ray’s soul coin is allowed to be put back in his body. Zari, forgoing staying with the team leaves the temporal zone to be with her love as he dies and ghost Nate watches from the rafters with his dad where they have a beautiful heart to heart leading to a beautiful sing along between the Legends and some of the magical creatures, endearing them to the humans and dissipating the fear. Using a sing-along, holding hands, some Tinkerbell-esque magic and Tabitha’s staff Nate’s soul is returned to his body but, the price is losing Zari who couldn’t stay away and let him die. In return Zari’s brother is now in Zari’s place and they have no memory of ZAri being a team member. Astrid turn in her coins and soul breaks a pocket full of some of the worst of the worst from history giving us some hope for a super dark but, hella interesting and fun season five and I for one can’t wait to see where this all leads.

LGN416b_0113b

I found myself nervous for the magical creatures when faced with the prejudice of humans, I also had a glimmer of hope for a cute little crossover but, I am happy to report that I was more than a little ecstatic about how things turned out, even without the superhero assist.  It was well written, beautifully acted, and a wonderful end to one of my favorite seasons of Legends. The show has a tendency to take things to the absurd but, they do it in such a way it’s almost believable making Legends one of my favorite shows on the CW line up right now. I can’t wait until the fall to see more of my favorite band of anti-hero misfits, especially knowing that Mary Tudor and Charlie Manson might be making an appearance.

For what this episode was and what it set up, I give this season-ending episode a hard 9.7

Recap: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow S4E11 – Seance and Sensibility

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow‘s episode “Seance and Sensibility” starts off with Nate’s dads funeral. It seems that Zari and Nate’s pretend relationship might be turning into something real. The whole team shows up to lend their support and Ray is afraid to see his bestie because everyone believes that Nora is the killer but, a cute little heart to heart assuages Ray’s fears and everyone’s favorite bromance is still going strong. Constantine is worried about the bad mojo where they are and it has nothing to do with Nora’s presence in the bathroom. While Charlie tries to help Nora deal with her monster half, a change in the timeline occurs and they discover some trouble in Bath, England 1802 and Jane Austen , and her writing, might be in trouble. Pre-mission girl talk gets raunchy in a super real way when Mona senses Zari’s attraction to Nate right before the time jump to the wedding and things get awesome when the bride to be leaves the groom at the altar for her maid and the groom confesses his love for his betrove’s mother.

Meanwhile back on the ship Ray is getting some secret alone time with Nora until Charlie interrupts. While Zari goes off to get some dirt from the handsome coachman she met earlier, Mona learns that it isn’t always awesome to meet your idols because Jane Austen turns out to be less of a romantic than her novels would have had us believe. Rory helps Nate do some digging while Constantine realizes that Nate’s dads spirit is still present and it looks like they might be able to make contact. Using Mona’s knowledge of the Sara and her blend in and get some juicy gossip and discover that the coach man they pushed Zari to get under so she could get over Nate, might just be the time fugitive they are after. Being the sharp woman that she is, she figures it out halfway through a heavy makeout session where he admits to his magical origin and reveals himself as Kamadeva, the hindu god of love.

Kamadeva, the namesake of the Kama Sutra, is more than willing to follow Zari wherever she goes , so getting him back on the ship isn’t that hard. While trying to keep Nora hidden from the rest of his team, by hiding her in his bedroom, which isn’t as romantic or passion filled as you would think for separated lovers. Constantine and Rory fill Nate in on his dad’s presence but, Nate is unwilling to hear him out which might bode poorly for Nora. Kamadeva releases his essence through the ship which helps give Ray and Nora a little boost , even if it is only in their dreams, to have some adorable and consensual sexy time and everyone else on board to have some super sexy dreams. While Charlie got David Bowie, Zari got Nate and Kama and, Sara got Ava and they were all happy about the match up, Mona got memories of her old dead love leading to an argument with an anti love Zari leading her to wolf out and go after Jane Austen.

Jane Austen gets into it with Mona/Wolfie and doesn’t back down, she admits that she does believe in love and only marrying for it. Mona decides to lay it all out for Jane and tells her that her writing will matter and, Jane in turn gives her advice about not losing control and keeping relationships equal. Zari has it out with Kamadevi who tells her his back story and tries to help her past her fear and love block and Zari is surprisingly all in and releases him to help her sort it out, leading to Zari proposing marriage. Back at the funeral Nate forgoes his plan to tell the truth about his dad and gives a lackluster and basic eulogy, his mom tells a sweet story about how much his dad loved him and how big his heart was.

In typical Legend campiness Zari breaks out in song and since they’re all still in the magic love spell, the musical turns into a bollywood musical complete with dancing. Mona shows up to put an end to the marriage madness and her girl squad backs up the deadening of the the love spell wedding, because who wants to be wife number 1001? Mona and Zari end their fighting and realize they will be okay because yeah, they might not have a relationship with the people they love, they do have some pretty kick ass female friends and it’s going to be okay because if all else fails they still have each other.

Constantine leads the seance we have been waiting for the whole episode and he jumps into Rory’s body, since Nate is still holding a grudge. Nate’s dad in his Rory suit tells Constantine that Neron was behind everything , just as Nate goes exploring in the house and finds his dad’s secret room where he sees a taped “commercial” finding out that his dad was trying to build a theme park based on one of Nate’s old drawings. Finding the tape causes Nate to forgive his dad because he realized he wasn’t being a bad guy, he was trying to do something good. Constantine is getting a little clarity too as he drunkenly fights with his taunting reflection before Neron, in his shiny new Desmond (Constantine’s former lover) suit, let’s Constantine know , officially, that he’s back and coming for him.

This episode hit all the good notes and while there wasn’t a whole lot of action, we got a whole lot of raw emotion and real feelings. Even the musical portion of the episode fit in, felt in place and made sense in the context of the episode. In a period piece with lots of drama and a little bit of song and dance, the camera doesn’t linger on bodices and beauty, even though there is much of it. Alexandra La Roche directed this awesome episode and the female gaze shows in the way things are shown and handled.

I give this episode a 9.3 for its visuals and its story.

Recap: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow S4E10 – The Getaway

In DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, “The Getaway,” the team is on the hunt for a magical being who makes it so that Richard Nixon cannot tell a lie. His overshare filled honesty screws up the timeline and sends the on the outs with the Time Bureau Legends into another mission. Hank is on a mission to bring the Legends down while Nate and Zari try and find out what the big boss is really up to, so they can bring him down with Gary getting to play secret agent man. Sara,  Ray, and Charlie plan to kidnap Nixon after getting a warning from Nate and Zari that the Bureau is hot on their trails. Constantine and Rory jump ship and bring a  heartbroken Mona with them to warn the others and avoid her getting caught because of her newly minted fugitive status.

LGN410a_0331b

During their escape from Walter Reed Medical, they manage to forget Charlie who is stuck using her still on the fritz shapeshifting powers to pretend to be Nixon. Constantine manages to remove the magical truth bug from Nixon and Mona gets stuck on Truth Roach duties while the team tries to figure out their next move. Gary is going full conspiracy theory crazy so, he goes to Nora for help in cracking the case and figuring out why magical creatures are being taken from their cells in the middle of the night.  Unfortunately, the bug breaks free just as the team is stopped by the police on suspicion of drug use, forcing Ray to tell the truth, which makes him sound high and in camptastic Legend’s fashion, hijinks ensue.

LGN410a_0283b

The Bureau overhears the troopers call, repeating what Ray said and show up in full force, led by Hank , to catch the Legends and bring them in. Zari figures out a way to slip a message to the team using radio waves to keep them off of the Bureau’s radar while Gary and Nora try and hack into Hanks computer. Nate tries to pump his dad for information under the guise of a father-son chat so he could feed the info to Gary and Nora via the coms to help them crack his password.  Nora and Gary almost get caught by Constantine’s ex-beau and realizing there is a disturbance in the force warns Gary to watch out, he then calls Hank to warn him that someone was in his office and he figures out that the father-son bonding might have been a rouse and Nate might still be team Legends.

LGN410a_0120b

The bug gets out in the back of the RV and everyone lets their truth out in an amazing way that only the amazing Legends could. It is real, raw, hurtful and hilarious all at the same time! The truth talk gets a little too deep causing Sara to let Mona know how she really feels underneath it all about losing Sarah, which makes her take off on a bicycle in the most adorably hurt way possible.  After Constantine manages to get the bug out of Sara, the team takes off to find Mona because, they don’t leave team members behind and, no matter what the circumstances, Mona is now a Legend.

LGN410a_0010b2

Nate gets some false intel from her dad and tries to thwart his capture plans but it doesn’t go as expected. After running away Mona finds herself in a diner that’s crawling with agents getting her into exactly the kind of trouble that Sara was afraid of. Sara and Constantine have a real heart to heart giving her the outlet she needed to get back on track and get her head in the game, while not neglecting her super valid feelings. Meanwhile, in Bureauland, Hank uses Nate’s mole status to lead the legends into a trap and back at the bar, Mona overhears the agents saying they’re on their way to capture the Legends. Using her rage at the killing of her neanderthal love and , in some small part the fear that her new friends might be in danger she, Kaupe outs and takes down all of the agents. Ray and Mick end up in the middle of a blockade and end up getting arrested with Nate still unaware that his dad is on to him.

While Sara and Constantine try to talk a raging Mona down the Truth Roach gets free gets into Nixon and Nate causing him to have a real honest talk with his dad, he gives his dad an ultimatum which results in the Legends getting to go free because at the end of the day, he loves his son more than his job. A bug-free Sara finishes the conversation she had with Constantine,  to the pain-filled Mona and, the freeing of her fears, anxieties and pain in a hella honest monologue helps Mona to return to normal, tears streaming and ready to hug it out.

With the Legends free to go, Zari shows up to bring them back on board and they finally remember that they forgot Charlie. Zari also fills Nate in on what his dad has been up to with the magical creatures and it’s not good, causing a bit of a dent in their relationship. We get some insight into what’s actually going on when we see Hank try to call his deal with an actual devil off.  Nora feels the twinge of evil and breaks free from her cell to save him but, she’s a little too late for anything but,  time to be blamed for it.

Legends is nothing if not consistent and “The Getaway” is just as cleverly written, action-packed, and heart string tugging as it always is. The writers have discovered a formula that works hella good and they haven’t tried to change it, which is a good thing. This issue was all about family, by blood or by choice, dealing with your emotions, coming to terms with being OK with not being OK and, leaning on the people in your life. It was solid, real and beautiful. If only because I’m type salty that Ava and Sara haven’t made up.

I give this episode a solid 9.0

Recap: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow S4E9 – Lucha De Apuestos

Our ragtag team of time traveling bad ass banditos are back with a vengeance, tying up loose ends from the cliffhanger midseason finale and setting up some story lines for the rest of season 4’s run. Lucha De Apuesta shows us the aftermath of Mona trying to help her caveman boyfriend Konane escape the government issued magical creature kidnappers. A wounded Mona ends up in the hospital after the attack and everyone thinks she’s the bad guy. The Legends get called in to bring her in after a daring post op escape where she mindwipes Gary and sends her hairy beau to an unknown point in the past. Her escape and loving reconnection is short lived because she ends up on board the ship after being shot with a tranquilizer dart and the legends try to uncover the real threat from Mona’s far fetched story and bring the caveman back.

Gideon takes the crew to 1961 in Mexico City to investigate an anachronism that leads the team to the Lucha Libre world while Zari stays behind to fact check Mona’s story. Konane has become super famous as Los Lobo sidelining the career Constantine’s fave Luchadore El Cura and turning him into a drunk instead of the bastion of piety that he was supposed to be. Constantine feeling sorry for his hero gives him a bit of a pep talk while Mona realizes that the team plans on returning her love to the unsafe environment. Zari discovers Mona’s story is true and footage was deleted, she shares her discovery with Nate and they discover that the guilty party is his own father. Back at in 1961 Mona tries to warn Konane resulting her almost getting trampled by the crowd before he rescues her and carries her off.

Konane takes Mona back to his lair where they have a nice chat and he makes her a crown of flowers. Nate tries to talk himself out of believing his father is capable of the things that he’s being accused of and he plans a caper with Zari to get his dads phone to see the original security footage while he’s a gala. Back at Konane’s humble abode, Mona and Konane’s sweet date is ruined by the Legends storming in causing him to go literally ape-shit. Luckily, Mona is able to calm him down allowing Sara to subdue him and get everyone back on the ship where Sara gets filled in on Zari and Nate’s discovery.

While Sara goes to tell Ava what’s going on, the Legends on board learn that if they bring Konane back and he doesn’t fight Mexico descends into chaos. So they take him back where El Cura trains him to lose so his victory is uncontested and Konane can hopefully ride off into the sunset with Mona. Unfortunately, in the present Eva finds out where they are and saddles up to roll out. We also catch a glimpse of Constantine’s true love at the party, well his true loves body which may or may not be inhabited by Constantine’s demon arch nemesis.

Zari manages to swipe Nate’s dads phone to uncover the truth while Ava preps to roll an extraction team tos top the fight, despite Sara’s warning that it will mess up the timeline. Constantine tries to help his hero win the fight and make it believable and it is kind of fun to watch him play fanboy. The extraction team shows up and Sara gives the order to act a fool and it is glorious and campy and everything we love about Legends. El Cura saves Konane from being shot by the extraction team which sets him back on track to becoming a star and setting history right.

Nate has a heart to heart with his dad and you can sense it will lead to him being a double agent. Konane and Mona have an adorable date which is interrupted by a well meaning Mick who gives a spoiler to his books which Mona is a fan of , while avoiding letting her know he’s her favorite author. Ava and Sara have it out and realize that they have a fundamentally different world views an call it quits to both of their broken hearts. Mona opens the portal to send Konane home and if you weren’t crying after Ava and Sara broke up you will be because Konane gets shot while they are saying goodbye. But, that’s not the only thing that happens in the last 30 seconds that will give you chills because, saccharine sweet Mona has a secret of her own and it is so AWESOME that I never saw it coming.

Overall, this episode was everything any fan could have wanted for the return of the Legends. There was emotion, action, silliness , seriousness and so much fun. For such a lighthearted show Legends seems to find a way to give you the feels, the character development is so strong that you find yourself rooting for minor characters like Mona and Konane. The setup for what remains of this season was seamless and I’m so ready to see how everything plays out. With such a strong opening I know that the Legend writer’s haven’t lost a beat, they even managed to keep the biggest twist of the episode hidden under wraps until the very end, while making it fit believably into the story. I also really want to play the game Ray invented.

I give this episode a hard 8.9

TV Review: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow S3E8 Crisis on Earth-X, Part 4

Barry and Iris’ wedding brings the gang together, but things go awry when villains from Earth-X attack the ceremony. This is the finale to “Crisis on Earth-X”!

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow wraps up this year’s big crossover between Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, and Legends. The Nazis are now on Arrow and the Flash’s world and have a bomb that can do serious damage but they’re still after Supergirl’s heart, which is so weird to be the goal of this entire event.

This episode brings everyone together in one final battle that sees Nazis running around and killing individuals indiscriminately. There’s a brutal aspect to it all but something that’s also heroic at the same time. There’s good, there’s bad, but the action is plentiful.

What’s more surprising is the death of the event and a return in some ways. While I expected the return once that character arrived the death threw me. Not only because it’s a death but who it is and who he represents considering it’s Nazis. That aspect is front and center during the funeral. While I don’t expect it to last, the event’s willingness to present pink triangles and yellow Stars of David make me respect the event for not washing over the reality of it all.

“Crisis on Earth-X” wraps up with what looks like repercussions that will continue on at least for the short term and isn’t an empty event that has no impact. The ending too was damn near perfect with… not going to surprise that. While there’s absolute flaws to the event, it’s one that has balanced everything well in 4 episodes that packed a hell of a lot in and give us lots of payoff.

Review and Recap: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow S3E6 Helen Hunt

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow S3E6 Helen Hunt has our rag tag gang of superhero misfits trying to get Helen of Troy back into her own time in order to save Hollywood. Helen of Troy has a face and presence that launches a flurry of fists between any man who lays eyes on her. Everyone seems to be infected by her beauty, except for Jackson who has Stein’s mind thanks to a freaky Friday Body swag. Jackson only has eyes for Hedy Lamarr and her beautiful brain, there’s a nice historic shout out to Lamarr which is very much appreciated in an episode that takes aim at male gaze.

This episode is another well written win for the Legends Writers Room, this time around taking on (white) male entitlement. The ladies take the lead and have to save the day giving us an amazing action packed romp through time. We get a nice glimpse into what it must have been like to be Helen of Troy and have wars fought in her name without allowing her any agency. There’s a nice sense of sisterhood when Helen drives off with the female Legends as the men of Hollywood go to war over who gets the girl.

Back on board the ship those who don’t know learn quick, without Hedy Lamarr becoming famous and sharing her work, the ship can’t run because, her patents laid the groundwork for everything awesome. Damien Darhk is up to his old tricks with some bad ass chicks as his seconds in command and, big plans for his new new world order as a hybrid born again body. There’s also a lot of reveals on the family lineage front, Darhk has a daughter who’s even more ruthless than he is and OG Vixen has a granddaughter who is living her life in the dark side. We also get to see Helen find agency by being her own hero and coming to Amaya’s rescue and Hedy fixes Firestorm after mansplaining some science to them.

While women reigned supreme tonight, the show ends with Ray coming clean about the Vixen family tree and the ship being captainless as Sarah lies in a coma but there’s some solace in knowing that Kira drops Helen off on Themyseria and letting her live her own life, with some of the baddest warrior women we know.
