Battle Chasers #10 isn’t worth the wait

Battle Chasers #10

“Martial Law” tells the bloody tale of retired swordsman Garrison and the fugitive Red Monika as they face off against Maestro’s gang of supernatural killers-the Martial Paladins! Battle Chasers #10 is a the long awaited return of the series and the end result is an issue that feels like the wait isn’t quite worth it.

The return of Battle Chasers was announced in 2015 as part of a Kickstarter for a video game. In 2019, it was announced that series creator and artist Joe Madureira would no longer be drawing it with Ludo Lullabi stepping in, then general silence. So, it’s a general pleasant surprise that Battle Chasers #10 has actually been released after such a delay. Unfortunately, with too much time passed, the last issue was published in September 2001, the return feels more like a story readers may struggle to remember.

The comic attempts to catch readers up with a page dedicated to recapping where the story is at, but, while helpful, it doesn’t really replace reading the story itself. Instead, the comic is a movie that has already started and you attempt to dive into even though it’s already been playing for a 60% of it. It’s also not helped the writing is generally stilted with a sparse amount of dialogue and cuts in the scenes that jump around a bit too much at times. The result isn’t an entertaining read and rather frustrating as the underling coolness of it all is still there.

Ludo Lullabi‘s art doesn’t quite have the style of Madureira, but the look of the comic delivers a style that stands on its own. If Lullabi did this comic without the history, it’d get tons of buzz but as is, it’s compared to what was and what was initially promised. While good, it doesn’t quite match up to that. But still, there’s a flair to it that has me wanting to check out more of Lullabi’s work.

Battle Chasers #10 is frustrating. It isn’t the welcome return one would hope and instead feels like a series and project whose time has passed. Like many “classic” series revived, it doesn’t stand up so well and the nostalgia isn’t quite enough to really hook you. Overall, a bummer.

Battle Chasers Returns… Sort Of

Battle Chasers Anthology cover

The Battle Chasers: Nightwar Kickstarter went out with an update to backers concerning the new Battle Chasers comics that were part of that fundraising effort.

Created by Joe Madureira, the series launched in April 1998 and saw the last issue published in September 2001. It ran just nine issues, and one prelude issue, and suffered extreme scheduling issues and delays which made publisher Image Comics infamous in the 90s. There was an average of about six months between issues.

Madureira penned the update of the status of the new comics and said that responsibility with his video game studio has once again delayed the series. He has come to the realization he needs a team to help him on the series to complete it, so while the comics will be written by him, with as many pages as he can manage, it won’t only be by him alone. No team has been announced yet.

Starting at the $90 tier, the Kickstarter pledge included all-new comics, issues #10, #11, and #12 as well as the video game Battle Chasers: Nightwar, a soundtrack, and more.

The response online has been negative as some backed the project for the comics to be done by Madureira himself and only by him. Others see this as just a continuation of the original series’ delays.

The new issues are to pick up where the originals left off focusing on Garrison and his past relationship with Red Monika.

If you’ve never read Battle Chasers or want a new copy, the anthology is getting a reprint in an affordable softcover format. It’ll collect all nine issues as well as short stories, pinups and covers. It’ll be out in September. A giant-sized hardcover was released years ago and is not only hard to find but if you do, can be rather pricey. The hardcover anthology can easily run into triple digits.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar Comes to the Switch in May

Airship Syndicate has announced the Switch release date for Battle Chasers: Nightwar. The game will be released on May 15th. The video game was funded through a Kickstarter and while the Switch release wasn’t part of the original campaign, it’s been approved and now has a release date.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is based on the comic series Battle Chasers by Joe Madureira launched in 1998. The series suffered from extreme scheduling problems. Nine issues were released in four years. Originally published by WildStorm under its Cliffhange imprint, the series eventually moved to Image Comics in 2001.

The series saw nine issues released with a tenth solicited and not released. Madureira said he’ll be releasing issue #10 and two more issues. In October 2017, Madureira said the issue would be released in Spring 2018 with the new 3 issue arc focussing heavily on Garrison.
