Review: Vampirella #0

vampi2017-00-cov-a

Beginning a new and VERY different direction! Vampirella was last spotted in 2016 doing what she does best-defending the world from threats both mystic and evil. She hasn’t been seen since. Now, over a thousand years later, she’s poised to make her fateful return, but the world that awaits her is unlike anything she might expect-or want to defend! It’s the start of an adventure for Vampirella unlike any she’s had in her long and storied history. Don’t miss the train before it leaves the station!

It’s a new beginning in the fourth volume for the classic horror-centric heroine Vampirella. The world has changed a lot since she last stepped out of the darkness. While not much is revealed as to what the state of the world is. It does make one curious to find out. Writer Paul Cornell does a great job as far as that.

The art by Jimmy Broxton is dark, almost mysterious in nature. It all comes together to reveal very little about the world or the prophecy that foretells her awakening. The clothing the characters wear does suggest it takes place at some point in the future. But a lot remains to be seen and I can’t wait to find out.

After a sleep of over a thousand years, Vampirella finds herself back among the land of the living, but in a world far different than the one she remembers, where hope is laced with fear and blood has a far different taste.  And speaking of taste, finding an appropriate outfit for the era leads our fanged fatale to a chance encounter that will garner her not one but two potential allies.

Dynamite Launches Paul Cornell’s Vampirella for 25-Cents

Next year will see Vampirella heading in a new and very different direction! Vampirella was last spotted in 2016 doing what she does best – defending the world from threats both mystic and evil… but she has not been seen since. Vampirella #0 will answer the questions behind her disappearance! The debut issue retails at 25-cents to allow for fans to read at an introductory price and retailers to confidently stock copies on the shelves. Retailers are also able to qualify for Incentive copies by Joseph Michael Linsner and J. Scott Campbell.

Over a thousand years since she vanished, Vampirella’s poised to make her fateful return, but the world that awaits her is unlike anything she might expect – or want to defend! Written by acclaimed comics, novel, and television writer Paul Cornell and illustrated by the masterful Jimmy Broxton, it’s the start of an adventure for Vampirella unlike any she’s had in her long and storied history. Don’t miss the train before it leaves the station!

Vampirella is a raven-haired heroine who remains, even after 45 years of publication, one of the comic industry’s most well-known characters, due in no small part to Dynamite Entertainment. Since Vampirella’s very healthy resurgence in 2010, Dynamite has published three volumes of a monthly series, several miniseries and one-shot specials, and crossovers with multimedia brands and comic book peers. The Vampirella franchise is a haven for writers and artists with a penchant for the macabre.

Vampirella #0 is slated for release in February 2017.

Review: Wool #1

wool #1 coverThis is the story of mankind clawing for survival, of mankind on the edge. The world outside has grown unkind, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they profess to want: They are allowed outside.

It all begins here! Hugh Howey‘s bestselling Wool makes the leap into comics, with mysteries and thrills for new fans and surprises for the already faithful. Wool #1, the Silo is explored, and a lie is revealed.

I’ve heard a lot about the “Silo” series of books, but sadly I’m not much of a prose reader (I read too slow), so haven’t had a chance to partake in them. Luckily, I get a chance to experience the hype before it receives another adaptation on the big screen, in comic form courtesy of writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti whose adaptation is given visual life with art from Jimmy Broxton.

The first issue is all set-up, but it’s done so in such a way I immediately want to read the second issue and find out what happens next. Taking place all within a silo, the sense of a confined space is prevalent and oozes off the page. That’s even with the first issue exploring the various floors of the complex. This is the opening chapter, the teaser before the title plays, more than enough to get me entranced and wanting to find out what happens next.

By the end of the issue, I had an idea of the world, what’s come before, and some of the key players. What I don’t know is what comes next. And for that, I can’t wait to find out.

Amazon’s Jet City Comics Comes to comiXology

WOOL_Issue_1Amazon Publishing’s graphic novel and comics imprint Jet City Comics and comiXology have announced that the first digital issue of Wool: The Graphic Novel, an adaptation of Hugh Howey’s #1 Kindle best-selling science fiction novel, will go on sale today on comiXology and Amazon.com. Single issues in the six-issue run will release every two weeks and sell for $2.99 on comiXology. The entire comics run will also sell for $4.99 as a Kindle Serial on Amazon.com, with new issues delivering automatically to customers on the same release dates, and as a $4.99 bundle on comiXology once all six issues are released. The print edition of the collected graphic novel will be available on Amazon.com and at other retailers in late August.

This is the first joint release since Amazon acquired comiXology, and I expect to see more of this in the future.

Howey’s dark, dystopian novel Wool (the first novel in the Silo Saga trilogy) was a New York Times, USA Today, and #1 Kindle best seller and is one of the most-reviewed science fiction novels ever on Amazon, with over 8,000 customer reviews. With an all-star team including comics writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, Hugo-nominated illustrator Jimmy Broxton, and acclaimed cover artist Darwyn Cooke, Wool: The Graphic Novel brings Howey’s dark, dystopian vision to life like never before.

Ashes Isn’t the First Kickstarter Project to Offer Retailer Incentives

It’s great to see Publishers Weekly cover Kickstarter and Alex de Campi & Jimmy Broxton’s Ashes.  It’s an interesting project and I myself chipped in $30.  Kickstarter is a crowd sourcing website that allows creators to reach out to the public to raise money for their projects.  It’s become a democratic publishing engine that relies on consumers to vote with their pledges and dollars.  However in the coverage, writer Todd Allen claimed:

In what appears to be the first of its kind, de Campi has offered a “retailer pack” of the graphic novel: 5 limited edition, numbered hardcover graphic novels (suggested retail price: $30) for $105, which works out to a 30% discount. The offer also includes an “art card” that can be sold immediately and also contains a password to read the digital edition of the graphic novel, which will be serialized at comiXology as the book is being produced. The participating stores will be the only retail locations selling Ashes in 2012.

That’s fantastic except two projects (I found, might be more) beat Ashes by over 3 months when it comes to retailer incentives.  Super by Aberrant Press and The Hero Code by Jamie Gambell both offered incentives for retailers.

Super saw two levels for $200 and $500.

$200 – GROUP/RETAILER PLEDGE #1: 20 copies of the book will be sent to you as well as 20 of the preview books and 20 of the postcards and your name(s) printed in the book’s “thank you’s” section. Also, you’ll get a page of original art (again, first pledged gets first pick).

$500 – GROUP/RETAILER PLEDGE #2: 40 copies of the book will be sent to you as well as 40 of the preview books, 50 of the postcards, your name(s) printed in the book’s “thank you’s” section and 10 of the signed and numbered prints! Also, you’ll get 2 pages of original art from the book (first pledged gets first pick)!!! AND A SPECIAL BONUS: A ONE PAGE AD FOR YOUR STORE OR GROUP OR WHATEVER REALLY (so long as it’s within reason)!!!

The Hero Code offered the following:

$30 – *RETAILER REWARD* – x10 copies of the book, 7 standard cover, 2 JR Variant and 1 wrap around variant, plus a button, print and 5 full collections of trader card sets. Retailers can order more than one set.

Great to see the coverage, even if the claims are wrong.
