Hopeless Savages Break to Receive New Release Date

Oni Press has announced a new release date for the next chapter in the Hopeless Savages series. Hopeless Savages Break will now release in November 2015. Originally slated for August, the title’s release date has shifted due to a production delay.

Hopeless Savages Break continues the story of fan-favorite protagonist Zero and her punk rock family. Zero finds herself in college and thoroughly hating it, though an upcoming tour with her band The Dusted Bunnies promises to rejuvenate her spirits. But when a rival band threatens to end the tour early, and without her family, Zero is in no position to fight back.

Fresh Romance Announces New Creative Teams, Stories, and two new Kickstarter Stretch Goals

Fresh RomanceRosy Press publisher Janelle Asselin has announced the new creative teams and stories for upcoming issues of Fresh Romance, the digital romance comics magazine that is currently being funded via a now-live Kickstarter campaign. Upcoming stories will include:

  • A sexy and surprising fantasy tale written by Marguerite Bennett.
  • The first ever collaboration of writer Marcy Cook and Maya Kern, in which a couple wins, then loses, a heart-shaped helium balloon which they follow through the fair.
  • A romantic comedy about one woman’s deep, abiding love… for a Game Master by Jen Van Meter and Kyle Latino with Marissa Louise.
  • A fantasy story from the publisher of the Smut Peddler anthology, Spike Trotman, about a woman in a tower who romanticizes a man she sees from above everyday.

Asselin’s new imprint Rosy Press will debut Fresh Romance in May 2015. The first issue of the monthly anthology features sundry stories ranging from a clandestine, queer high school love affair to an impeccably researched and illustrated Regency-era romance.

Rosy Press has also announced two significant, newsworthy stretch goals:

  • A Kevin Wada cover for issue 5, plus a digital wallpaper pack of all the covers for all backers will be added if the Kickstarter campaign raises $42,500.
  • A 10-page comic written by bestselling writer Gail Simone and illustrated by Rafaela Herrera will be available exclusively for all backers who are one-year subscribers, if the Kickstarter campaign raises $47,500.

Aimed at attracting a diverse readership, Fresh Romance content will be available in a variety of digital formats: via ComiXology or as a PDF, CBR, or ePub file, and will always be DRM-free.

Oni Announces Hopeless Savages: Break

Oni Press announced today Hopeless Savages: Break, a new chapter in the Hopeless Savages story, by original series creator Jen Van Meter and artist Meredith McClaren, featuring art by original series artist Christine Norrie. Hopeless Savages: Break will release on August 12th, 2015.

Hopeless Savages: Break continues the story of fan favorite protagonist Zero and her punk rock family. Zero finds herself in college and thoroughly hating it, though an upcoming tour with her band The Dusted Bunnies promises to rejuvenate her spirits. A rival band threatens to end the tour early, and without her family, Zero is in no position to fight back. Meanwhile, the rest of the Hopeless-Savages are dealing with their own problems, including babies, contracts and drug addictions. If there’s one family who can pull it all off, it’s this one.

In a release, Van Meter said:

The first Hopeless-Savages story came out in 2000. Fifteen years! And for every one of them, I’ve been so grateful for the support of Oni Press and the work of every one of the many amazing artists who’ve helped me bring this family to life. It took a really, really long time to write Break–largely for personal reasons; I was growing up along with the characters, and I felt a disconnect I couldn’t articulate. When James Lucas Jones–doing what a great editor does–suggested I run toward that, I finally found the emotional center for this story; then Meredith McClaren came aboard and brought beautiful storytelling, great instincts about the characters, and a wonderful sense of humor, making everything I wrote a thousand times better.  The icing on the cake, for me, was when Christine Norrie was able to make time to do the flashback sequences; she’s been with me, Zero, Twitch and the rest of the family since the beginning, and I’m thrilled she was able to continue on this strange road trip with us.

Oni Press to Announce Seven New Series

Oni Press revealed today their plans to announce several new titles and company news items over this coming week. These will be revealed in a March Madness-themed event starting Thursday, March 19th. Today they also announced the promotion of key staff in anticipation of the announcement.

The titles announced will feature well-known creators Marc Guggenheim, Christos & Ruth Gage, Cullen Bunn, Jen Van Meter, Drew Moss, Nick Filardi, Justin Greenwood, Meredith McClaren, Ben Towle, Scott Kowalchuk, Dennis Culver, Christopher Sebela, Ryan Hill, Rashad Doucet, and Matt Gardner.

Review: The Death Defying Dr. Mirage #4

dm04With this the fourth of five issues in this miniseries, the resolution to the challenges against Dr. Mirage is nearly here, but in the meantime there is an assortment of problems faced by her before she leave the astral plane.  After the previous issue, little time is wasted for her reunification with her deceased husband Hwen, but at the same time the forces of Ivros are on the move and March’s scheming keeps the pace moving as numerous influences seek to destabilize the barrier between the astral plane and Earth, allowing for an invasion.

At its heart this is a fairly engaging story, with a well-conceived concept, but where it fails is with the artwork.  It is not even that the artwork is bad, because the artist is evidently skilled enough, only that when superimposed upon the astral plane, that it does not help the chaos of understanding who is where, but rather adds to the confusion.  With the astral plane as essentially a setting wide open in terms of creative inspiration or imagination, it makes sense for such a setting to be unfathomably bizarre and complex, but from the reader’s standpoint, it is still necessary to have an anchor to understand it, and the artist fails to do so with this issue.

On the whole though, this still succeeds in the way that it is meant to.  Once the confusion of the artwork is bypassed, the reader is left with a story that is full of both interesting plot twists as well as well-developed characters.  The villains are evil and the heroes are good and neither in solely a superficial sense.  The heroes face difficult choices from a moral standpoint and it is in those choices where the final issue of this series is headed.
