Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

inhuman #1 coverEach week, comic shops sees their shelves filled with tons of comics waiting to be consumed by the fans. We go through the releases each week to highlight what we think are your best bets to pick up. Below you’ll find ten comics, graphic novels and trade paperbacks you should check out when you head to your shop.

Top Pick: Inhuman #1 (Marvel) – Before the series was out, there was a shake up in the writing department, but prolific writer Charles Soule got the step up to the plate. This series which gives us more of an insight into the new Inhuman world of the Marvel universe seems like it’ll be a pivotal series, and in Soule’s hands, it’ll be a solid read.

Aquaman and the Others #1 (DC Comics) -Aquaman and his band of allies spin off into their own series. Aquaman is one of the highlights of the DC 52, so I’m expecting this series to be a solid one.

Black Science #5 (Image Comics) – One of the most fun new Image series sees a group of mad scientists jumping through the multiverse.

Buzzkill TPB (Dark Horse) -What if you could only get your powers from ingesting chemicals like alcohol, nicotine, or other illicit drugs? What if you wanted to get sober? Find out here!

The Field #1 (Image Comics) -A man wakes in a field wearing nothing but his underwear? Welcome to Image’s latest miniseries.

Harlem Hellfighters (Broadway Books) – The historical graphic novel that follows a black regiment in World War I. A true story written by Max Brooks, that already has movie buzz.

She-Hulk #3 (Marvel) -Another book written by Charles Soule. The first two issues have been amazing.

Shotgun Wedding #1 (Image Comics) -The other Image debut this week sees an assassin hunted down my his former fiance who he left at the altar!

Starlight #2 (Image Comics) -The first issue by Mark Millar was a fantastic updated Flash Gordon. Can’t wait to read the second issue.

Trillium #8  (Vertigo) – The brilliant limited series wraps up this week with this final issue. If you haven’t read the series, go back to the beginning, you won’t be disappointed.

Soule is Inhuman, Fraction is No Longer Inhuman

Marvel has announced that Charles Soule is taking over as writer for Inhuman beginning with the All-New Marvel NOW! #1. Previously Matt Fraction was announced as the writer, and this is the second recent change announced in less than a week. The comic has also moved from the original January release to April.

Soule will join the previously announced Joe Madureira to introduce the world to Marvel’s newest super hero franchise. Born out of the events of Infinity and the blockbuster Inhumanity #1, Inhuman will change the landscape — and the fate — of the entire Marvel Universe.

Once again, the biggest creators bring you the biggest characters in the biggest stories…and it’s happening NOW!

Marvel Discusses What to Expect in Inumanity and Inhuman!

Today, Marvel hosted their latest Next Big Thing live blog, this time about their next big upcoming event Inhumanity, Inhuman and the future of the Inhumans! On the chat was writer Matt Fraction who was joined by Axel Alonso and Nick Lowe.

Fraction kicked it off by stating:

This will be one of the moments where you can plant a flag and see a big change in the Marvel Universe.

Fraction continued that the Inhumans no longer get to hide anymore and they number more than we’ve ever known. He saw this as freedom as a writer to do different things with an entirely new situation.

The Inhumans are a race of super-powered beings; the Kree came to Earth, did a little genetic manipulation centuries ago, and created the Inhumans.

Axel chimed in saying that this story’s foreground is  new characters who will be introduced and will be our eyes into this world. This is really the Marvel Universe as a whole discovering the Inhumans. Marvel says this is an exciting new angle, though it sounds a lot like Earth X, or when mutants seemed to be everywhere.

Fraction described their “coming out” as similar to humanity’s reactions to mutants, so are amazed and some are terrified. He promised a “really big saga.” While the events of this next “era” of Marvel spins out of Infinity, you don’t need to read that event to understand or enjoy it.

Fraction’s section of the story focuses on the royal family. Fraction and Olivier Coipel are the team behind the one-shot that kicks this off then Fraction and Joe Madureira will be the team behind Inhuman. You’ll also see events in Avengers Assemble and Indestructible Hulk where Bruce Banner will investigate an aspect of this.

What to expect becomes much clearer after Infinity #4. There is the main series Inhuman as well as a number of tie-ins in other ongoing series. Fraction said:

It felt new and kind of dangerous to go into new territory. It’s as close to a novel as I’ve ever done. You’re kind of writing the last page before you’re writing the first page so there’s a grand design.

Fraction describes it as a space opera/political novel. The discussion ended with the team saying they can’t wait for the public to see all of this which they’ve been teasing in various ways for the last couple of years.

Marvel’s Wave 2 Branded All-New Marvel NOW. New Invaders and Inhuman. (Updated)

Marvel went to USA Today to announce their second wave of Marvel NOW comics, dubbed All-New Marvel NOW. This second wave begins December 24 with Avengers #24.NOW, which will be an entry point for new readers and remains Marvel’s flagship series. The new wave will also see All-New Invaders and Inhuman in January. This initiative continues through April of 2014.

Though cryptic in the article, select NOW comics will include digital codes “for the first collection of issues so fledgling fans can get brought up to speed.”

Inhuman will follow these key players in the Marvel U after Infinity and the upcoming Inhumanity. The series will be written by Matt Fraction with ar by Joe Madiurera. The series follows what happens when a large part of the human population is exposed to the Terrigen Mists that gave the Inhuman’s their powers. So, we have a budding population of newly powered individuals, much like what’s been dealt with in X-Men storylines of years past. Unfolding out of the cataclysmic events of Infinity, new Inhumans spring up around the globe forcing the once-secret society of Inhumans out into civilization! With Avengers-level powers and abilities, will they chose to stand with Earth’s Mightiest…or against them? As the chaos consumes the globe, discover the fate of King Black Bolt and his royal family as the world becomes Inhuman!

Avengers #24.NOW written by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Esad Ribic sees Captain America take a larger role (he hasn’t had one already?) as he and Iron Man round-up a new team of Avengers to deal with a runaway planet heading toward Earth. Only the mightier-than-ever Avengers can prevent the annihilation of two worlds!

Captain America also joins some friends from World War II including the original Human Torch, Namor the Sub-Mariner and former Cap sidekick Bucky Barnes who seems to be going by his brainwashed name of Winter Soldier in modern-day with All-New Invaders by writer James Robinson and artist Steve Pugh. The alien Kree Empire discovers a way to weaponize Norse Gods, can these timeless allies survive the deadly cosmic trenches?

Are you Inhuman?

For decades, the Inhumans have lived sheltered and separate lives from the entire Marvel Universe, led by their fearless ruler, Black Bolt. But following the cataclysmic events of Infinity, Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon and Triton along with the rest of the Inhuman Royal Family ascend to the forefront of the Marvel Universe as major players as the world plunges into Inhumanity! Thousands of new Inhumans have powered up around the globe, leaving  Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Spider-Man, Wolverine and the rest of the Marvel Universe to react to this emerging new race of super-powerful, super-strange beings!

Marvel Editor In Chief Axel Alonso describes this as a “game changer.” Alonso explains

The Inhumans are here to stay, and there are lots of them,” explains Axel Alonso. Their emergence in the Marvel Universe –during and after Infinity– will be a game-changer. Who’s to say the planet is big enough for everyone?

Leading the charge on humanity’s bold new age comes the biggest series of 2014, Inhuman #1! From white-hot creative team of writer Matt Fraction and artist Joe MadureiraInhuman rewrites the rules of the Marvel Universe. No truer words than “Among Us Hide the Inhumans” have ever been spoken, as Marvel explores what happens if you discover you are INHUMAN!?

Fraction explained:

The events of Infinity jumpstart a long-dormant genetic inhuman strain.  It leads into a global crisis overnight — in the middle of, and coming out from, Infinity. The idea that there’s a secret super hero city, and I might belong there, was a hook that fascinated me.  Inhuman means I’m telling small, human, intimate origin stories about new Inhuman characters, set against the grander story of the politics of a fragmented royal family battling one another for dominance. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done.

This Fall, the superhuman race takes an uncompromising leap as Inhumanity washes over the Marvel Universe with more heroes—and villains—than ever before!
