Imperial War: Black Panther #1 Gives Us Some of the War from T’Challa’s Perspective

Imperial War: Black Panther #1

Blamed for the assassinations that have started an all-out galactic war, T’Challa will first need to survive a brutal assault from the World-Breaker Hulk and Amadeus Cho before he can even think about hunting down the true culprit! And all while his spacecraft spirals towards certain doom! Sounds like another day at the office for the Black Panther! Imperial War: Black Panther #1 puts the spotlight on T’Challa as he’s under attack from the Hulk.

Imperial has been an impressive event so far. It has shaken up the cosmic section of the Marvel Universe and gives an epic story to so many characters that have been quiet on the side. While I’m not the biggest fan of the whole Intergalactic idea of Wakanda, they’re a key part of the event as they’re the ones blamed for multiple assassinations and it is their world that initially came under attack. Imperial War: Black Panther #1 drops readers into the action as T’Challa is being pursued by the Hulk and attempts to figure out what’s going on.

Written by Victor LaValle and Jonathan Hickman, Imperial War: Black Panther #1 feels a bit like a half issue and feels key in the overall story. It shows T’Challa figuring out something is amiss and attempting to ratchet down the fighting so everyone can figure out what’s going on and who’s to really blame.

LaValle and Hickman do a solid job of creating a rather hectic setting as T’Challa scrambles to not only survive but also get to a point where he can figure out what’s going on. The duo do a solid job in the story of making it feel like that moment just after a strike where those attacked are still attempting to figure out what just happened. It also does a solid job of showing T’Challa as the diplomat he can be.

There’s also a mystery teased here with a father and son that should be interesting to see where it goes.

The art by Cafu is good. With color by David Curiel and lettering by Ariana Maher, the comic looks good and fits into the look of the main series. It captures that chaos of what’s going on but it doesn’t quite nail that epic feel of the main series. But, it still looks solid and captures all of the moments well. The only negative it has so much to cover, it doesn’t feel like it doesn’t do justice to a few of them.

Who knows what will be shown in the main series, which makes this feel like a “half” issue, in that readers of the main series will want to pick it up to figure out what’s going on. Imperial War: Black Panther #1 isn’t one that anyone not invested in Imperial will care about. But, for those already reading that, this is a nice addition to the main series.

Imperial #3 Reveals the Villain Behind the Curtain

Imperial #3

As the conflict begins to spread out to the wider universe! We find out who’s really orchestrating the great game of cosmic houses as the last chance to stop a universal war presents itself. Will our heroes be able to stop it in time? Imperial #3 pulls back the curtain of who’s behind the chaos with major implications.

Imperial #3 promised a reveal of who has been behind the cosmic chaos and it delivers with an intriguing examination of the puppet masters and then an ending that shakes up the entire Marvel Universe, not just the cosmic portion. Written by Jonathan Hickman, this series has delivered with every issue, nailing down its teases and filling them with action and surprises. Under Hickman’s guidance, Marvel’s cosmic characters didn’t just wake up, they’ve come back with a massive explosion.

It’s hard to really describe what makes Imperial #3 solid without spoilers. Part of the comic is a trio of characters attempting to stop war from spreading while the other half is who is behind it all. There’s been teases as to one based on what has been presented, a chess like game and blue hand, making it clear who one is. But, the second individual is a surprise and just the tip of the iceberg as to what’s going on. For those who have been paying attention, there’s been a major absence in Marvel comics and this issue marks a big return with a clear direction.

The art by Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini is top notch. With color by Federico Blee and lettering by Cory Petit and Ariana Maher, the visuals go from big action and borderline horror to a more quiet match of minds. The colors and visuals pop with a comic that looks great and echoes earlier cosmic events like the Annihilation saga. The comic hits every beat it needs visually with the fear and concern of our trio of heroes and the cold calculation of the revealed villains.

After years of stumbling, the “Marvel Event” is back with both Imperial and One World Under Doom delivering two epic stories that promise to shake up the Marvel Universe going forward, and delivering. Imperial #3 was full of surprises and where those might lead has us excited for what comes next in this series and when everything is settled.

SDCC 2025: Marvel’s Cosmic Order Revealed

For months, Marvel Comics has teased that Imperial, the four-part epic by visionary writer Jonathan Hickman and superstar artists Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini, would usher in a new era of cosmic storytelling. At the Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing Panel at San Diego Comic-Con, fans learned exactly what that meant with the announcement of five all-new ongoing series spinning out of Imperial later this year!

In addition to first looks for upcoming Imperial War one-shots, Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, VP & Executive Editor Tom Brevoort, and writer Stephanie Phillips revealed the first wave of ongoing series set in the new intergalactic landscape created by Imperial: Planet: She-Hulk, Nova Centurion, Black Panther: Intergalactic, Exiles, and Imperial Guardians. All five titles are set up in the Imperial War one-shots releasing over the next few months and begin launching in November, starting with Planet She-Hulk by Stephanie Phillips and Aaron Kuder and Nova: Centurion by Jed MacKay and Álvaro López. Both Phillips and MacKay are also writing their series’ respective IMPERIAL WAR one-shots.

Planet She-Hulk is a solo series unlike any other in She-Hulk’s history as she uses her brains and brawn to maintain order on the savage planet of Sakaar. Nova: Centurion represents a new era for one of Marvel’s oldest and most iconic space-faring heroes as Nova does whatever it takes to keep the memory of his people alive amidst the corrupt system now governing the stars. Read on to learn more!

Imperial #2 Delivers Shocks, Twists, and Surprises as War Spreads

Imperial #2

Against the fallout of someone mysteriously killing the rulers of the Marvel galactic empires, the fires of war are lit! As that conflict simmers, Nova and Star-Lord race to discover who is behind all these evil acts – a journey that takes them to the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda! Imperial #2 is packed with surprises as reveals come quickly as war is declared.

If Imperial kicked off with a bang, really a poison, Imperial #2 delivers the actual bang. Numerous leaders have been killed with an attack that points to the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda as the perpetrators. We all know this isn’t who’s really behind it, as the comics have teased manipulation by a greater force and political thrillers like this are rarely so straight forward. Writer Jonathan Hickman amps up the action of the issue as forces muster and the assault against the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda comes in many forms and tactics. And that’s one of the first things that stands out in the issue. Hickman gives thought as to how each force would attack and how they’d play off of each other a bit. With that, we get a space battle that’s epic in scope, scale, and brutal in the results.

But, Imperial #2 really stands out as to how quickly the story moves. Things are compacted in a good way here as the series is rather short for such an event, just four issues and a series of one-shots. With that brevity, it needs to make every issue count and can’t string things along. By the issues end, it’s a bit clearer as to what’s going on, though not totally, as betrayal, reveals, and some crazy action all play out in the epic way that so many stories in Marvel’s cosmic corner have delivered.

Part of that epic sense is due to the art of Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini who are joined by Federico Blee on color and Cory Petit and b on lettering. The visuals are crazy with ships battling and shooting off volleys, assaults from uber power beings, and battles onboard ships that feel claustrophobic and chaotic as they should. All of the characters look great and everyone, and so many moments, stand out. Gladiator telling his forces to hold until its the right moment to strike comes off in such a badass way. It’s a comic whose visuals give it a grand scope the story is going for.

Imperial #2 is a solid issue that wastes no time at all. Two issues in and this event has lit a fire in Marvel’s cosmic corner and if it keeps it up, this is a story that’ll be up there with other modern Marvel cosmic stories like Annihilation. It’s delivered in every way, storytelling and art, and has kept its promise to shake up this underused setting and underused characters. It’s an event that delivers as promised.

The Fate of Empires rest in the Hands of Professor X and Nova in Imperial War One-Shots

Last week, Imperial, a four-issue event series by visionary writer Jonathan Hickman and superstar artists Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini, kicked off a galaxy-spanning conflict that’s set to boldly transform the cosmic landscape of the Marvel Universe. The highly anticipated series serves as the foundation for a new era of intergalactic storytelling, starting with five Imperial War one-shots that spotlight individual characters and groups as they navigate the startling developments and explosive conflicts sweeping the stars. The first two Imperial War one-shots, Imperial War: Planet She-Hulk and Imperial War: Black Panther, were announced last month and will hit stands in August. Fans can learn about the next two Imperial War one-shots, Imperial War: Exiles and Imperial War: Nova Centurion, arriving in September.

The five Imperial War one-shots represent key chapters of the overarching Imperial narrative and will each be co-written by event architect Jonathan Hickman. Imperial War: Exiles by acclaimed writer Steve Foxe and superstar artist Francesco Manna will follow up on Professor X’s departure from Earth as the X-Men’s founder assembles a new team of heroes to protect his daughter, the recently deposed Empress Xandra. Imperial War: Nova Centurion sees blockbuster Marvel writer Jed MacKay join the action alongside rising star artist Matteo Della Fonte to take the helm of the galaxy’s most steadfast defender.

A coup at home has imperiled Shi’ar Majestrix Xandra, tearing her from the throne in Imperial War: Exiles. Her only hope for survival lies in a mismatched group of renegades led by her father, Professor Charles Xavier, and her resurrected mother, Lilandra! But when faced with the awesome power of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, the only way to survive…is to run!

The Xandarian Worldmind will be lost forever…unless Rich Rider can earn the credits needed to keep it alive in Imperial War: Nova Centurion! So Nova must offer his services to the highest bidder – Have Helmet, Will Travel!

Stay tuned in the weeks ahead for more Imperial announcements!
