Marvel’s New Iceman Comic’s Creators Revealed Plus More Details

Continuing yesterday’s X announcement of the creative teams behind next year’s X-Men: Blue and X-Men: Gold, Marvel has revealed the Sina Grace and Alessandro Vitti will take the adult Bobby Drake on a brand new missions to prove himself in next year’s Iceman.

Iceman has never had a solo series before, so the team behind this brand-new series is going to really take advantage and show that Drake is more than just “that X-Man who tells jokes.” That means he’ll be going after some of the biggest, baddest villains the Marvel U has to offer.

In addition to being a globetrotting exploration with one of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel Universe, Iceman will also be studying how Bobby Drake’s personal life is going to help continue evolving him into one of Marvel’s best Super Heroes.

In 2017, prepare for Marvel Comics’ Iceman to unleash unlimited elemental potential as a brand new era begins for one of the most iconic X-Men in all time and it’s all part of Marvel’s ResurrXion!

Iceman #1 comes from writer Sina Grace, artist Alessandro Vitti, and a cover by Kevin Wada.

ResurrXion Teases Iceman Series

Marvel began to tease ResurrXion at the end of last week with more promised this week. The first is Iceman #1 with images of Iceman throughout the years.

The teasers are most likely what we can expect post Death of X and IVX which are two big events going over the next few months hinting at a “reboot” of the “X” universe, a line of comics many think have been neglected by the publisher.

We’ll keep on updating as more is revealed.

Review: Age of Apocalypse #1

aoa001Secret Wars has been so noteworthy thus far for its ability to incorporate other crossovers into its stories.  While the quality of these tie-ins has varied wildly, it has nonetheless been somewhat comprehensive in its attempt to give some exposure to all the major crossovers from the past.  It would be nearly impossible therefore to leave Age of Apocalypse off of this list.  Although this story occurred in the pages of X-Men related titles, it was nonetheless one of the bigger crossovers that Marvel has seen, as well as being in part responsible for the upcoming sequel to the X-Men movie franchise. As it was told at the time it featured the introduction of the mutant Apocalypse, a mutant of extreme power who undertook a plan for world domination and very nearly succeeded.  In the original story Charles Xavier is removed from the scene early on, and Magneto takes his place as the mutant championing compromise between mutants and humans, while equally being responsible for trying to stop Apocalypse’s tyrannical and genocidal reign where he attempts to wipe out regular humans from existence.

As opposed to other tie-ins which have attempted to re-imagine or recast some of the major aspects of the stories, this one instead seems to be looking for more of a pure retelling.  Apocalypse’s Horsemen are sent to the Savage Land to track down Cypher, although he is defended by a group of core X-Men.  After he is captured he is taken to Apocalypse, who is revealed to be employing several other mutants, many of whom have joined his side.  Standing against them are still Magneto and his mutants, as well as a group of humans led by Carol Danvers.  Apocalypse grows restless to wipe out his opposition, but it will not necessarily be as easy as he planned.

This first issue most sets the conditions for what will follow, and it does so in a meticulous way.  It is a challenging enough task, condensing a huge story arc into a few issues, but at least a proper job is done at this if if this issue ends up being a bit clunky at times.  There is enough action mixed in with establishing the scenario that it doesn’t become too heavy in the dialogue and concept, but it also seems to be leaving a lot of potential for the following issues.  It bodes well for the tie-in, and while this issue is a bit too conceptual to get through at times, it still excuses it for what is bound to come.

Bisexual Erasure Strikes Again in All-New X-Men #40

All New X-Men 40 biBrian Michael Bendis’ All-New X-Men #40 hits shelves tomorrow with a big change to one of the original X-Men characters. Warning Spoilers to follow.

In the issue, regular jokester Bobby Drake aka Iceman, is confronted by telepath Jean Grey after Drake makes a comment about the “hotness” of a female character Magik. Grey, reading his mind, outs Bobby as a gay. Bobby initially disagrees, citing the fact that his older self (time travel stuff) has dated numerous women. He asserts to Jean that maybe he’s bisexual to which Jean says nope, he’s “fully gay.” You can read the exchange on the left.

So I’ve been sitting on this because I want to read All-New X-Men #40 myself first before going on record. But having seen the panels I need to at least say this: Bendis, I really respect your work but you messed this up. Please consider listening to actual bisexual people when you do this sort of thing. Because we are going to have a different perspective on this than you will. I’m not saying that Bobby needs to be bi (though lord knows, we need another bi hero). I’m not saying that Bobby should identify in any particular way. I’m saying that the way the scene was written dismisses the existence of bisexual people. And Bobby deserves to have the chance to define his own sexual orientation rather than having a narrator stand-in tell him how he should or shouldn’t identify.

Evan at Bisexual Books summed it up nicely:

Saying everyone is bi erases us. It invalidates bisexual identity and gives room for people to feel it’s perfectly ok for them to smack their own labels on us rather than allowing us to self identify. This is exactly what young Jean does to young Bobby in this exchange.

Maybe the writer doesn’t want us to interpret Jean’s voice as the narrator’s, though her being a telepath complicates this. Maybe he is showing the limitations of her teenage vocabulary and understanding of human sexuality (they just pulled her out of the 60s). But it is hard for me to read the scene any other way.

Gen Con 2012 – Review – Marvel Heroclix TabApp

With the official release, now seems to be a perfect time to go over my first hand experience with Wizkid’s Heroclix TabApp which blends the real and digital when it comes to the popular figure game. The first thing this game isn’t, a recreation of the table-top game on the iPad. That caught me off guard as the teasers leading up to it, lead me to believe that’s what I was checking out. Instead, what we have is a fun game aimed at a younger audience that uses Heroclix physical characters in combination with an app for the iPad. It’s a good bridge to get the younger set into the game.

With two sets, one featuring X-Men characters (Wolverine, Cyclops and Iceman) and the other being Marvel Super Heroes (Captain America, Iron Man and Thor), six figures total, each has a story over 15 maps and 30 enemies. The game is pretty simple. You put the figure on the screen and then enemies come at you forcing you to attack the enemies by tapping your finger. It took me two games to get it down, so it isn’t quite as simple as that.

It’s a fun solo experience, and with the figures usable in regular Heroclix games it’s a great way to get your young kid into the physical game. Cut scenes entertainingly introduce you to each level and threw a swipe of your finger, you’re able to use power-ups and special attacks. It’s fun and definitely has an audience in mind, ages 8 and up.

While the person I talked to was rather coy, there’s plans to expand and integrate DC characters. We can expect two sets, one based on The Dark Knight Rises and another general DC super hero set.

If your son or daughter constantly want to play with your Heroclix, but are too young, this is a great alternative to get them interested.
