Review: The Vision #12

vision__12Virgina did the right thing. Or she did the wrong thing. Or she just did what everyone does. She saved what she could.

Tom King had a vision, and it was as beautiful as it was tragic. We have arrived at the end of what is one of Marvel‘s best series in recent history. The Vision #12 continues the story of The Vision family.  A family of synthezoids who are just trying to live in suburbia and blend in. It all started with a small mistake. Those mistakes kept rolling together until they formed a giant wrecking ball that tore this family and those around them apart. What is waiting for us in the final issue of Marvel and Tom King’s modern take on Shakespearean tragedy?  Some more sorrow of course, but that’s not it. We also get reflection, and some hope.

Virginia has been trying to do the right thing since this story started, but she just keeps making a mess of things. There is more revealed in this issue that really shows the lengths she is willing to go to protect not just herself, but even more so, her family. This story is one that I will read again from the beginning, and I bet it reads fantastic in a trade format. There are so many shocking things that happen, that I want to go back and see what I may have missed. I do think Tom King tried to show us from the beginning that building a wife from the brain of the Scarlet Witch probably wasn’t going to end well.

We knew Viv would make it out okay, because well she is in Champions and that takes place post Civil War II. The same goes for Vision since he will be in the new Avengers book. This book does a good job of actually giving us a conclusion, and I will say a pretty good one at that if only because the story did things I didn’t expect. When I read this series, I am always expecting the worst, and this book is definitely filled with darkness, but there is also light just peeking through the clouds by the end.

The art by Gabriel Hernandez Walta is still great. I’ve always loved this book for its unique art, and this issue continues that fantastic trend. There are some panels that tell so much story without any words at all, and that helps with the tragedy. The silent moments make it more uncomfortable for me, but that’s a good thing with a book like this. Jordie Bellaire on colors also delivers. Even with the bright pink of their skin and the bright green hair on Virgina and Viv, the book still has a dark and dreary feel to it.

Vision has come to an end at #12, and what a ride it has been. The writing by King has been so genius that I was waiting for everything to go to hell by the end of this series. While some things do continue down that horrible gut wrenching path, this story does a good job of reminding us that there is always a lesson to be learned in a tragedy. If you have not read this series, it is an absolute must buy. If you cannot find all twelve single issues, which may prove tough, be sure to read this in trade. I give this series a slow clap from a guy at a party in an eighties movie, and that is a massive honor.

A while ago, a robot created a family. And all was good. For a while. Then came the murders. The lies. The betrayals. The battles fought. The battles lost. The family lost. And now, at the end, Vision stands alone. He must decide how he will go on, if he will go on, if he can go on. And that decision will shape the Marvel Universe for quite a while. The epic, stunning conclusion to the most highly praised series of the year. Simply put, this is the issue everyone will be talking about.

Review: Unleash #1

2016-01-amigo-674x1024

Soon to be a feature film! Assault survivor Emmie wants to change the world by creating her own superhero persona. Unfortunately her plans are limited, as being a hero takes more than a costume. In a strange twist of fate, Emmie forms an agreement with the most unlikely crime-fighting partner you could imagine. Now she can lay her own brand of twisted justice down on sexual predators.

Words by El Torres and screenwriter Jennifer Van Gessel, issue #1 features art by acclaimed artist Gabriel Hernandez Walta with interior pages by Nacho Tenorio and Sergio Mora.

Ah, destiny it is filled with dark, and slightly ironic sense of justice. Following a dark, stormy day, and a very unfortunate event Emmie changes. Almost radically so, as her sense of self gets twisted. Going from seemingly normal teen, into something darker as her vigilante side comes to life.

The cover is a misdirect of sorts, sense the “rape machine,” looks like some sort of bondage mummy. While the origin of the rape machine is hidden, its design is oddly curious. There are some more graphic scenes in depicting rape, that are well drawn despite the illegal nature of the act.

This is definitely for mature readers, you’ve been warned!

Review: The Vision #1

2015-11-06-visionI’ll be honest, I had no intention of reading this book.  We all know the Vision as a member of the Avengers, especially after his big screen debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron.  But a book about Vision having a family and living in suburbia?  Curiosity got the best of me and I thought ‘why not?’.  And I am very glad I did!

In The Vision #1, Vision has settled in Arlington, Virginia, along with his wife Virginia, daughter Viv and son Vin.  He has a position at the White House; the President’s point man between him and the Avengers; the kids have started high school and have acquainted themselves with the neighbours.  But you can’t help but notice that all of this is done outside of what we would perceive as ‘normal’.  The Visions go through the motions, but without any of the human emotional cues that would go along with their experiences…and that in itself gives the book a creepy feel.  We see the neighbours welcoming them to the neighbourhood, which leads to a tour of the house that feels cold and eerie.  The kids start at their new school, with the entire student body staring at them throughout the first day, with one even inquiring of Vin is he is normal.  Neighbours take pictures with them…and of them, showing us that they are perceived as nothing more then oddities…something else for the neighbourhood to gossip about.

And the interaction within the family feels very cold and distant…you can see them acting like a family, but so detached and methodical, they are anything but.  There are moments, however, where we see these synthezoids acting and reacting almost as human as any one of us, especially the unexpected action towards the end of the issue, and the equally unexpected reactions that follow.

Tom King does a fantastic job of bringing us this story of trying to fit in when you know you don’t.  It was great to see Vision and his family trying to understand how humans interact and react, and to see how they themselves react to the attention given to them.  The best part, for me, was the way King dropped a few bombshells and hints as to what is to come for the Visions; none of it bodes well and tells us that this experiment does not end well for any parties involved, and that just hooked me in more.  Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s art work is perfect for this title, giving the Visions a very stiff, artificial feel in a world they are trying to fit in to.  My favourite was the depiction of the kids; Vin and Viv are shown smiling as they show off their abilities to their classmates, but the expressions come across as insincere, like they were programmed to do this as it is the social norm, and it really sells the whole point of this book home.

Overall, I loved this title!  This is something completely different from anything I have read; an artificial superhero who wants to settle down in the suburbs with a family he created.  Dark hints and foreshadowing have told us that this experiment is not going to have a happy ending, and I for one will be sticking around to see what leads to all of this crashing down.
