Pick of the Week – Daredevil #18

Checking out what’s coming out this week, there’s a lot of solid books to choose from. After a lot of internal debate, I have to go with Daredevil #18 as this week’s pick. Mark Waid‘s run on the series has been classic and the combination of amazing artists makes this one of the best comics out there by any publisher. There’s few series all the reviewers can all agree on, but it’s pretty unanimous that Daredevil is a series that has to be read and should be read by everyone, and yes it’s that good.

  • Daredevil #18 – see above
  • Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #15 and Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15 – Marvel has made their Ultimate universe, the one where anything can happen and everything does. You want a universe where everything is on the table? Here you go.
  • Revival #3 – Image Comics has a huge hit which is as much philosophical as it’s a “zombie” comic. One of my favorite of the year.
  • Extermination #4 – BOOM!’s post apocalyptic alien adventure has been a great ride, a slow one, but entertaining enough to get me coming back each month wondering what will happen next.
  • Irresistible #3  – Zenescope has an interesting series here, where a man becomes as the title says irresistible to women.

Pick of the Week – The Victories #1

I love Michael Avon Oeming‘s work and the prospect of him doing an adult take on super heroes is too cool. The fact that it’s Dark Horse lets you know it’ll be a solid product. That’s why The Victories #1 is an easy top pick for the week.

Not long from now, all that will stand between you and evil are the Victories: Six heroes sworn to protect us from crime, corruption, and the dark. As one member cracks down on the violence, he discovers himself touched by a painful past through the physical powers of LINK. Will this trauma cause him to self-destruct or continue the fight?

There’s the usual comparisons it’s being made to (*cough* Watchmen *cough*) that sets a high bar and expectation, but that only makes me want to check it out more. I’m sure this one will be under ordered and over looked at the shop, so do yourself a favor and make sure to grab a copy!

  • The Victories #1 – see above
  • Revival #2 – The first issue blew me away as one of the best comics this year and I’m expecting no less from the second. This is a new take on the undead tale that looks like it’ll infuse more family drama into what’s usually a survivor’s tale.
  • Pathfinder #1 – Jim Zubkavich’s Skullkickers is an amazing fantasy comic. The fact he’s doing this series based off of the popular fantasy game is a smart move. The fact it’s being released the same week as Gen Con is brilliant.
  • Extermination #3 – BOOM! has been kicking ass lately with it’s original works. This is one of those series that’s leading the charge. It’s really what would have happened post-Watchmen if the alien attack was real.
  • Saucer Country #6 – The fact this series is about politics is awesome to me, the reality that it’s a political comic with an X-Files spin makes it a must buy.

Extermination #2 Sells Out, Goes To Second Print

BOOM! Studios has announced that Extermination #2 has completely sold out at the distributor level and the publisher has rushed to fill demand with a second printing. First printings of the issue may still be found at a local comic shop near you. Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? Use www.comicshoplocator.com to find one!

WE LOST. THEY WON. In the wake of an apocalyptic alien invasion, the world’s greatest super-heroes and deadliest super-villains must form an alliance to prevent their own extermination. Nox and Red Reaper continue their trek across the ravaged American countryside, amassing former friends and foes for the ultimate battle of resistance. But when old grievances rear their ugly heads, will the alliance survive the journey intact, or will it be torn apart from the inside out? Written by Simon Spurrier (X-CLUB, FEAR ITSELF: THE HOME FRONT, WOLVERINE: DANGEROUS GAMES) with art by hot newcomer Jeffrey Edwards, EXTERMINATION is a superhero survival story that boldly explores the dark crevices of an entire genre. What happens when all the battle lines are redrawn and foes become unlikely allies in a desperate war for the fate of the very planet — and the outcome of a species? Written by Simon Spurrier (X-CLUB, FEAR ITSELF: THE HOME FRONT, WOLVERINE: DANGEROUS GAMES), EXTERMINATION is a superhero survival story by an author that boldly explores the dark crevices of an entire genre.

Pick of the Week – Captain Marvel #1

Ms. Marvel is now Captain Marvel and in a way becomes the highest profile female character in Marvel comics, she’s the only one sporting her own comic. On principle I think diversity is a good thing to support, so I’m speaking with my wallet this week and picking up a copy of Captain Marvel #1. Here’s hoping it’s good enough that I’ll want to grab the second issue two.

  • Captain Marvel #1 – see above
  • The Activity #7 – This issue about a special ops team is written by actual Navy Seals. I read it, and it’s a solid read.
  • Extermination #2 – I enjoyed the first issue of this BOOM! series that’s a Mad Max/Post-Watchmen mash-up.
  • Daredevil #15 – Writer Mark Waid and this series picked up Eisners this weekend. Not too late to jump on and catch up.
  • Saga #5 – This sci-fi epic has been amazing with each issue and this one had moments that caused my jaw to drop.
