Enter Jonas Kaminsky, a rising small-time gangster who’s embroiled in a turf war with Levi Solomon, an old-time mob boss with millions tied up in gambling and booze. We Only Kill Each Other #1

We Only Kill Each Other #1 feels like it’s a bit of a reminder of our history that we should be reminded of for today. Set in 1938, World War II looms over the United States. While we might think we rallied to take on Nazis and fascists with ease, the reality is that they had a lot of sympathizers on American soil. Some of the resistance that fought the Nazis here at home were the Jewish-American gangsters who put aside their differences to take on the threat they saw coming. This is the story of two gangsters, rivals thrown together to realize they hate Nazis more than each other.

Created by Stephanie Phillips and Peter Krause, We Only Kill Each Other #1 kicks off with a story fans of gangster tales will appreciate. We’re introduced to Jonas Kaminsky and Levi Solomon, two individuals who are full of clichés and stereotypes that make their type of characters interesting and engaging. One is a hot head firebrand willing to start a fight in a bar. The other is the more thoughtful boss who’s deeply religious but has no problem putting a gun to the head of someone during Shabbat. There’s an interesting mix between the two that when they eventually come together should make for a lot of entertaining moments.

But Phillips and Krause also make sure to take the time to present the threat Kaminsky and Solomon are going to face. In a very well done scene, we’re slowly introduced to the Nazi threat. It’s not just through a speech but also violence that’s somewhat shown. Krause takes the very smart direction to both show and not show the violence of a crowd beating a would-be assassin screaming “Kill the Jew”. It punctuates what’s happening but at the same time also allows the imagination to run wild with the specifics.

Krause’s art is solid like that. With color by Ellie Wright and lettering by Troy Peteri, the comic does a great job of hitting those key moments. An individual is killed after spilling some info with the gory details left off the panel. The crowd beating an individual. A fight that we see only as it’s about to begin. There’s a lot of engaging moments that does a solid balance of delivering the right beats and showing the reader just enough.

We Only Kill Each Other #1 does a solid job of reminding readers that there was a Nazi threat here on American soil. It wasn’t a clear rally to defeat them during World War II. Much like today, there was sympathizers who would bring their hate to our soil. Much like then, this series seems like it’ll remind us that we need to stand up to defeat them and it won’t necessarily be a pretty battle.

The Dusk Kickstarts a new Superhero

Down below the abandoned skyscrapers and crumbling colonial architecture, beneath the buzzing lights and ragged billboards, is a fading, floundering city propped up by vice, extortion, and fear. This is BLACKSTONE—a dark, mirror image of Boston or Philadelphia. A city whose history dates back to the earliest days of our nation.

Jaime Nuñez is a former baseball hero turned public defender. After coming into a fortune and some super heroic tools, he discovers there might be a more direct way to do good in the world.

The Dusk is a new superhero comic from Creation.Ink and Alex Segura, Elizabeth Little, and David Hahn, with Ellie Wright and Taylor Esposito. It’s currently running on Kickster and will be published by Ominous Press.

The Dusk is a modern reimagining of the superhero vigilante that flips the script on the traditional “might makes right” approach while adding the grounded, socially conscious perspective that modern crime fiction has become known for.

There’s a lot of options to back the comic with single issues, collected graphic novel, t-shirt, and so much more.

The campaign runs until April 22 at 11:50 AM and is looking to raise $39,500.

Dark Horse and ComiXology Cut a Deal to Bring comiXology Originals to Print

Dark Horse Comics and comiXology have announced that Dark Horse will distribute print editions of comiXology Originals graphic novels and collections. Select titles from the creator-owned line of comiXology Originals will be available in print for the first time for customers in comic shops, bookstores, and libraries. The program will commence in Spring 2021 with the release of paperback editions of the Eisner Award winner AFTERLIFT, Breaklands, YOUTH, and The Black Ghost.

When comiXology Originals was announced, print was a part of some of the releases through Amazon’s print on demand. While the digital program pressed on, the physical release of comics became few and far between to the complete lack of mention for numerous rounds of announcements.

Through this deal, Dark Horse Comics will be responsible for distribution and fulfillment for the titles through Diamond Comic Distributors for comic shops and Penguin Random House for bookstores around the world. ComiXology Originals will remain available to be read digitally for members of Amazon Prime, Kindle Unlimited, and comiXology Unlimited and for purchase on Kindle and comiXology.

ComiXology Originals’ exclusive content line debuted in 2017, and in their first year garnered an Eisner Award for Harvey Kurtzman’s Marley’s Ghost. The next year saw an Eisner Award nomination for The Stone King by Kel McDonald and Tyler Crook, and in 2020 an Eisner Award win for AFTERLIFT. In addition to the creator-owned line of exclusive content, comiXology Originals, through a partnership with Kodansha Comics, has re-released and newly translated manga such as BECK, Initial D and The Drops of God.

Dynamite Celebrates Independence Day with 3 Special Variants

This summer season, Dynamite is bringing the heat with a trio of collectible variant covers celebrating July 4th and American Independence. A diverse international set of creators pay tribute to the American-born medium and characters they love.

Joined by a fun background of apple pies, Bettie Page is herself an American icon of that caliber. Her work in pinup art and as a symbol of beauty and feminity has influenced countless artists within her home nation and around the world. Italian Vincenzo Federici, interior artist for the title, pencils, inks, and colors this fun and flirty cover for the second issue of Karla Pacheco‘s upcoming yarn.

Bettie Page #2 variant

Fellow Italian Alessandro Miracolo portrays the She-Devil With a Sword celebrating the holiday in the shadow of the Washington Monument and dangerously standing atop a stack of fireworks with blade and flag in hand. Don’t try this at home, kids. Irish colorist and series regular Ellie Wright makes sure the red, white and blue pop. It can be argued that the Hyrkanian heroine’s backstory is firmly tied to America, with her creation by Robert E. Howard in stories originally serialized in pulp magazines native to the States. Then expanded by Roy Thomas, who was a student of history and followed in the footsteps of comic and pulp innovators before him. Though always with an international flair, with renowned artists such as Esteban Maroto, Lucio Parrillo, Carlos Gomez, and more.

Red Sonja #18 variant

American artist Justin Mason has Vampirella in an even more dangerous position, straddling a giant explosive with lit sparklers. Though the sweet Uncle Sam style hat makes up for that and we’ll pretend she’s following proper safety precautions. The colors by Kike J. Diaz really bring the background fireworks to life. Similar to Sonja, the Daughter of Drakulon’s creation has a bit of American flavor. James Warren’s black and white magazines were able to dodge the censorship that plagued the comics industry for years. Do you think Drakulon has an independence day?
