X-Men: Days of Future Past Tops the Box Office

days of future past movie posterIt’s not a surprise, but X-Men: Days of Future Past topped the Memorial Day weekend box office with an estimated $90.7 million for the 3-day Friday-through-Sunday period. Over the four day weekend, the movies will finish around $110 million.

Internationally, the film debuted in 100 countries and will earn an estimated $171 million. It has yet to open in Japan or Spain though. That means when you combine the domestic and international totals, the film has so far earned $281.1 million which is the biggest opening in X-Men movie history.

Days of Future past has had good reviews, earning around 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A Cinemascore. Both are a good sign for long legs.

However, when you compare the movie to previous “X” films, especially adjusting for 3-D ticket prices and inflation, the film hasn’t done that amazing. X-Men: The Last Stand earned $102 million over the three day Memorial Day weekend and $124 million over four days in 2006. X-2: X-Men United’s earned $85 million in 2003, X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s earned $85 million opening in 2009.

In other comic movie news Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended up in fifth place this weekend in theater with about $7.8 million earned. Domestically it’s up to $185 million. Overseas the film has earned $489 million, so worldwide, that’s $673.9 million.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is no longer in the top ten after eight weeks in the theater. It has earned an estimated $1.7 million for the first three days of the Memorial Day weekend.

Godzilla Destroys the Box Office

godzillaGodzilla has stomped into theaters this past weekend with an impressive debut of $93.2 million. It was expected to pull in $65 million, so it clearly exceeded expectations. It is only behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s $95 million for the second largest debut of 2014. Internationally, the film has earned an estimated $103 million. The debut was good enough that word has come out a sequel is already in the works.

As expected men were the majority of the office, making up 58% of the audience, and 60% of the audience was over the age of 25.

The film as a decent 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, and it received a B+ Cinemascore.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 continued to drop, this time 54% in its third week. The film landed in third for the week. It earned an additional $16.2 million, bringing the domestic total to $172.1 million. Internationally, the film earned another $31.5 million, and its total outside the US to $461 million.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier continues to earn, bringing in another $3.8 million to bring its domestic total to $250.6 million. The movie is closing in on The Lego Movie‘s $253.8 million to become to top grossing film of 2014.

This coming week X-Men: Days of Future Past debuts, so next weekend’s box office should be very interesting.

Spider-Man Gets Exterminated, Drops to 2nd

amazing-spider-man-2-posterThe Amazing Spider-Man 2 has fallen to 2nd place, in its second weekend at the North American box office. The film plummeted 59% and earned an estimated $37.2 million for the weekend. That brings its two week domestic total to $147.9 million. That’s the lowest 14 day total out of the five Spider-Man films.

Spider-Man was knocked from the top spot by Neighbors, which opened with a much stronger than expected debut. The film earned $51.1 million which is impressive for the R-rated movie as it was expected to earn $35 million. That film cost $18 million to make compared to $250 million for Spider-Man 2 (which doesn’t include marketing).

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has earned $550.9 million worldwide, which Sony describes as “exceeding our goals.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, earned an additional $5.6 million this weekend and was in fifth place. For the six weeks the film has been opened, the movie has earned just shy of $245 million domestically and a total of $695,597,000 worldwide.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Drops to 2nd, But Top Grossing April Movie of All Time

Captain America The Winter SoldierWomen have ousted Captain America: The Winter Soldier from the top spot of the box office. The Other Woman has taken the top spot at the domestic box office, causing Captain America: The Winter Soldier to drop to second after three weeks at top.

Cap and friends still brought in an Estimated $16.05 million putting the film at an impressive $224.9 million domestically so far. That amount also makes it the top-grossing April release of all time in North America. Globally the film has brought in $645.2 million.

The film should keep plugging along with good word of mouth and most think it’ll end up somewhere around $250 million domestically.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens domestically this coming weekend, so expect that to top the box office. It brought in $67.2 million this weekend in 42 territories. The film has so far made $132 million overseas.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Stays in the Top Spot, Spidey Swings in Internationally

Captain America The Winter SoldierCaptain America: The Winter Soldier has done a three-peat staying on the top spot of the box office in North America. The film dropped 35.5%, earning $26.6 million. That brings the domestic total of the film to $201.5 million. That makes it the second highest domestic total so far in 2014, but the film is the top grossing film of 2014 internationally. It has earned a total of $586.6 million so far.

That makes the sequel much more successful than the previous film. The original film earned $176.6 million in it’s domestic run. The sequel has many weeks to go, so will continue to expand the gap from the first film.

Overseas, the story was a bit different. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has debuted outside of North America (it debuts here on May 2nd). The film topped 14 overseas markets and opened to $47 million. That breaks down to $15 million in the U.K., $, $11.1 million in Mexico, $6.2 million in Germany, $5.2 million in Australia, and $3.9 million in Spain.

Facebook Fandom Spotlight: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier dominated the box office this past weekend and we’re again given the opportunity to compare the demographics on Facebook with what we know was the audience of the film.

According to reports the film was 65% male. I’ll first compare the gender breakdown with that of Facebook fans and expect an update later with the age breakdown as well.

The fans of the specific term for the film are overwhelmingly male, 86.54% right now. But, when you include the second film and Captain America, that percentage drops to about 70.37%. That’s pretty close to who saw the film.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Has Record Opening

Captain America The Winter SoldierMarvel has another hit on its hand as this weekend’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier had a record April opening with an impressive $96.2 million in North America. That’s 48 percent more than the three day opening for the first film in 2011. That amount is on top of the $207 million it has already made overseas. The first film made a total of $193.9 million internationally and $370.6 million globally. This new film should beat that amount.

The movie cost roughly $170 million to make and $100 million to market, but it looks like the film will have no problem making that amount back and more. The theory is the Avengers film is helping boost the follow up films with an “Avengers Effect” as Thor: The Dark World also saw a similar bump.

Breaking down how well Cap 2 did, it earned $37 million on Friday, 14% more than the Thor sequel and 44% more than the first Cap film. 40% of the film’s earnings came from 3-D screens.

When it comes to demographics, the film was 65% male, and 43% under the age of 25. Audiences enjoyed it giving it an “A” CinemaScore, which is usually an indication the film will have legs due to good worth of mouth and repeat viewings. The film also as a strong 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of this posting.

It’ll be interesting to see if the film gives Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series a boost in ther ratings as the show is directly tied into the movie. The next new episode airs this Tuesday.

Movie Review: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America The Winter SoldierYou know the movie season has begun when the Marvel based comic movies begin to roll out. This year with a bang, flash, action, and intrigue Captain America: The Winter Soldier has the honor of filling the slot, and my guess filling seats based on word of mouth. Was the movie any good? I think it is easily the best Marvel movie to date.

During his appearance on The Daily Show, Samuel L. Jackson bragged this movie actually had a plot as opposed to people just punching each other, and boy does it. Playing off of society’s real world paranoia, and the newsworthy NSA surveillance, S.H.I.E.L.D. has expanded their program, moving ahead with policing the world. But, conspiracy, and corruption, begins to rear its ugly head. Captain America asks what it truly means to be free, how much freedom is worth safety, and how far will we go to stand up for our beliefs.

The story is loosely based on Marvel’s excellent Captain America run by writer Ed Brubaker, with a mix of Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Warriors. But, what it does more than any other Marvel movie so far is present a movie that’s fun for fans of action spy thrillers, but also has so many Easter eggs, I left the theater with whiplash. This movie is for the comic fans out there, as well as mass audiences, it truly is a perfect balance. I left the theater explaining to friends why I was jumping up and down in my seat a dozen times as names were being dropped or moments were hit with perfection.

The acting was decent, with everyone clearly having fun and shining with a solid script. This movies is what films are supposed to be, fun, and escapist fantasy. The few issues I had with the film didn’t factor in to my enjoyment at all, and living where much of the film takes place (even walking by filming when it was here in DC) my biggest issues was with DC geography and how it’d all work out.

The worst part of the film was the 3D which added little to the overall action and enjoyment. This isn’t a film you really need to see it.

The movie is excellent, for comic fans they’ll jump over the DVD release so they can pause and screen cap scenes and get even further secrets and nods that go by so quickly at times it was information overload. The film also bumps up the importance of the television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

It’s only spring, but the summer movie blockbusters have begun. You should run to the theater to go see the film, I’ll be at one for my multiple viewings.
