Review: Batman/Superman #2

Batman and Superman are locked in battle with Shazam in a solid second issue. Batman/Superman #2 has the pacing down as these two heroes realize they’re up against a hell of a threat. I’ll fully admit corrupted heroes as a concept is a bit of a yawn. Writer Joshua Williamson puts me in my place though with this and the previous issue.

To some extent, Batman/Superman #2 feels like certain beats are attempted to be hit. Williamson delivers the moments we’d expect if Superman and Batman were to fight Shazam. Even though they’re expected, they’re still entertaining. And that’s part of Williamson’s strength. The comic is fun like a wild ride you immediately want more of. You can see the twists and hills but it’s still enjoyable.

Still, while mostly predictable, Williamson delivers mystery as someone lies outside in the shadows directing the corrupted heroes. It’s a tease that is still a lot of fun even with so much of the story spoiled through solicits.

The art by David Marquez is amazing. Along with color from Alejandro Sanchez and lettering by John J. Hill, the visuals nail the tone. The small details on the corrupted Shazam are fantastic and use of lightning top notch. The comic pops visually. The lettering by Hill emphasizes the corruption. There are just amazing pages that had me lingering for quite some time. The art captures the excitement and energy of it all.

Batman/Superman #2 is a fantastic second issue. The cynicism for the concept has gone away. It’s a ride I’m completely strapped in for. It hits the key beats perfectly delivering on expectations but doing so effortlessly and with a hell of a lot of fun.

Following a showdown with the devious killer’s first sentinel, a jacked-up, Dark Multiverse-infected Shazam!, the pair has to figure out who else has been targeted for similar transformations. Their first two guesses: someone very close to Batman and the one hero that would make failure nearly impossible-Superman himself!

Absolute Carnage #2/Absolute Carnage: Lethal Protectors #1/Absolute Carnage: Miles Morales #1/Venom #17 (Marvel) – Events often don’t live up to the hype but “Absolute Carnage” has delivered so far. There’s only been good to great so far so we’re all in until we see otherwise.

Batman/Superman #1 (DC Comics) – The Batman Who Laughs has poisoned superheroes and this classic team-up returns to deal with it. The next chapter in an epic tale.

Doctor Mirage #1 (Valiant) – How do you solve the case of your own death? That concept is too cool to not check out.

Grass (Drawn & Quarterly) – An anti-war graphic novel about a Korean girl forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.

House of X #3 (Marvel) – The big picture is finally revealed and Hickman isn’t giving us a restart of the X-Universe but delivering the next major event.

Killers #2 (Valiant) – A deeper dive into Valiants “Ninja” world. It’s been cool so far adding a lot to this intriguing corner of the universe.

Knights Temporal #2 (Aftershock) – The first issue was really intriguing with a knight transported to modern times. The details are still a mystery but it’s a mystery we’re intrigued by.

Mall #1 (Vault Comics) – The Mall isn’t just a bunch of stores, this consumeristic mecca is filled with tribes and name brand gangs!

Manor Black #2 (Dark Horse) – If you read the first issue, you know why this is on the list. The comic is a mix of horror and superheroes and we’re intrigued to see where it all goes.

Marvel Comics #1000 (Marvel) – We’ve read this one and it’s an intriguing celebration of Marvel’s 80 years.

Mountainhead #1

Mountainhead #1 (IDW Publishing) – A father and son are nomads who think the government is after them. A lone survivor of a climbing expedition is covered in blood. The two will collide in this intriguing debut.

Power Pack: Grow Up #1 (Marvel) – Louise Simonson and June Brigman return to the beloved characters to celebrate 80 years of Marvel.

Red Winter #2 (Scout Comics) – The first issue was solid gritty crime/noir and we’re all in for the second issue.

Stalingrad: Letters from the Volga (Dead Reckoning) – Exploring the bloodiest battle of World War II.

Tommy Gun Wizards #1 (Dark Horse) – An alternate history where Eliot Ness is after Al Capone who’s dealing in magic.

DC Reveals More of the Infected in November

Six corrupt versions of DC’s Super Heroes are coming to terrorize Earth this November and December, as DC Comics has teased early details of a series of six comics running parallel to the story unfolding in Batman/Superman by writer Joshua Williamson and artist David Marquez. Each one-shot or tie-in special spotlights a corrupt version of Shazam!, Supergirl, Hawkman and more, known within the DC Universe as The Infected. These six issues star DC’s beloved heroes, revealed to be secretly infected by The Batman Who Laughs with a toxin that violently transforms them into the worst versions of themselves. Their buried frustrations and pent-up anger will boil to the surface, unleashing dangerous results.

Kicking off these spotlight, one-shot issues is The Infected: King Shazam! #1 on November 6th by writer Sina Grace and artist Joe Bennett, to be followed by The Infected: Scarab #1 on November 20th, written by Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum with art by Freddie E. Williams II. Both issues will feature covers by David Marquez and Dean White. One is a story of a hero whose soul has been turned black and who has something to prove to the old guard, the other a tale of a hero fighting the evil inside him, with his friends and family about to pay the price…and then some.

While fans got hints of The Infected in The Batman Who Laughs by Scott Snyder and Jock and have seen the brutality of a jacked-up, Dark Multiverse-infected Shazam! in previews of Batman/Superman, the scope of the deadly pathogen unleashed by The Batman Who Laughs, himself a twisted Dark Multiverse version of Bruce Wayne, has yet to be realized.

Rounding out November are The Infected tie-in issues Hawkman #18 on November 13th, written by Robert Venditti with art by Pat Olliffe and Tom Palmer, and Supergirl #36 on November 13th, written by Marc Andreyko with art by Eduardo Pansica and Julio Ferreira. Hawkman #18 cover art is by Tyler Kirkham while Supergirl #36 cover art is by Dan Mora.

Through all this, neither Superman nor Batman know who’s been infected, they don’t know who has turned, and they don’t know who’s a sleeper agent for The Batman Who Laughs. Can they even trust each other? All six of The Infected will be revealed when Batman/Superman #4 by Joshua Williamson and David Marquez, with an acetate cover by Emanuela Lupacchino, hits shelves on November 27th! 

The final two victims of The Batman Who Laughs’ toxins, no spoilers here, will hit shelves with spotlight one-shot issues of their own in December 2019. Pick up The Batman Who Laughs (HC) by Scott Snyder and Jock along with Batman/Superman#1 by Joshua Williamson and David Marquez on August 28th at your local comic shop for clues to who the other two heroes turned by The Batman Who Laughs’ influence might be!

World’s Finest Action Arrives in New Batman/Superman Preview

Now that DC’s published the final issue of The Batman Who Laughs they’ve shared an exciting NEW sneak peek into the ongoing Batman/Superman series that will launch on August 28th. The Batman Who Laughs collection (HC) hits your LCS shelves the same Wednesday as Batman/Superman #1 and will be stocked on bookshelves everywhere the following Tuesday, September 3rd.

Year of the Villain: Who Are The Infected?

DC has revealed Jock’s final cover artwork for The Batman Who Laughs #7 (on sale July 31) and new “Year of the Villain” promo artwork ahead of Batman/Superman #1 (on sale August 28).

The first arc of Batman/Superman will follow the two titular heroes as they hunt down six infected heroes in the DCU—people revealed to be infected by the Batman Who Laughs with a deadly pathogen that violently transforms them into the evilest versions of themselves. The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel must journey into the depths of Gotham City to learn which of their fellow heroes has been transformed into the horrifying horseman of their most dangerous and deranged foe ever.

But who are the Infected? Fans have already been shown a sneak preview of Batman/Superman #1, revealing that The Batman Who Laughs’ plot is bigger than either the Caped Crusader or the Man of Steel realized and showing the devious killer’s first sentinel: a jacked-up, Dark Multiverse-infected Shazam! Who else has been targeted for similar transformations?
