SDCC 2015: Warren Ellis & Gale Anne Hurd Take on El Pantera for Universal + Kill Shakespeare!

UCP_Refresh_CMYK_FMAs San Diego Comic-Con 2015 kicks off, Universal Cable Productions (UCP) has unveiled several new deals that will continue to fortify the studio’s growing genre library and cater to the high demand for television content inspired by science fiction, graphic novel and comic book stories. As part of its overall deal with Valhalla Entertainment, UCP today announced renowned graphic novel writer Warren Ellis, will adapt the popular 1970s Mexican comic book and Televisa format El Pantera as his first original TV series with Gale Anne Hurd set to executive produce and Televisa USA to co-produce.

Based on the popular 1970s Mexican comic book and hit Spanish language TV series adapted by Televisa, El Pantera is a vigilante crime drama set in a fictional metropolis on the U.S. Mexico Border. When a young officer is appointed Head of Police, he only has one request: He asks that his friend, who was wrongfully imprisoned, be set free. Under the guise of his rumored death, the two create ‘El Pantera’ to rid the city of the Mexican mob. Warren Ellis is set to adapt the comic with Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment attached to produce and Televisa USA to co-produce with UCP.

UCP is also developing the award-winning cult British film, The Machine into a scripted series for Syfy with the film’s Caradog James set to write the script and John Giwa-Amu to produce. The story follows a brilliant computer programmer, desperate to save his terminally ill daughter, who creates the first-ever piece of self-aware artificial intelligence.  But things go terribly wrong when the technology, designed to help injured soldiers, is hijacked by the government and used to create the ultimate robotic weapon. The Machine will follow multiple storylines as it takes a broad view of cutting edge scientific breakthroughs in genetic engineering, trans-humanism, and artificial intelligence.

Kill ShakespeareAdditionally, the studio has recently optioned the critically acclaimed comic series Kill Shakespeare, created by Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery, and released by IDW Publishing. This dark take on Shakespeare – which has also spawned a stage production and board game – pits his greatest heroes (Hamlet, Juliet, Othello, Falstaff) against his most menacing villains (Richard III, Lady Macbeth, Iago) in an epic adventure to find and kill – or save – a reclusive wizard named William Shakespeare. Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery are set to write.

UCP also announced this week a first-look production deal with legendary comic book publisher, Dark Horse Entertainment focused on developing and producing scripted programming from their extensive comic book library as well as new material.

Other notable genre projects in UCP’s development pipeline include: for Syfy: Channel Zero, a horror anthology series from Nick Antosca set to write the script, and Max Landis set to produce. The first season will be based on Candle Cove by Kris Straub, a story that originates from the user-generated internet horror phenomenon known as creepypasta;  Brave New World, based on the classic novel by Aldous Huxley published in 1932 with Les Bohem set to write, and Amblin attached to produce; Hyperion, based on the Hugo Award-winning science fiction novels that form The Hyperion Cantos by writer Dan Simmons with Bradley Cooper, Graham Kin, and Todd Phillips attached to executive produce and Itamar Moses to write the script and serve as co-executive producer.

UCP is also developing Dreadstar, based on the classic 1980s character from the Marvel-owned Epic Comics imprint by iconic Marvel comic book writer Jim Starlin with Evan Daugherty attached to adapt, BenderSpink attached to produce, and Starlin and Ford Gilmore set to executive produce.

Review: Sherlock Holmes vs. Harry Houdini #1

shhhcoverDynamite‘s Sherlock Holmes Vs. Harry Houdini features two enduring characters that are famous representatives of the late Victorian era.  What is equally interesting about the series is that the characters share something in common only in reverse.  Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character that many think to be real, as evident by the fact that many people send questions to his mostly fictitious address of 221B Baker Street in London.  Equally Sherlock Holmes has faced off against a number of real life people in fiction, among them Jack the Ripper.  While it is the case that likely fewer people think of Houdini as a fictional character, despite having been a real-life historical character, he factors often into fictional works.  Without even getting to the first page of the issue, the savvy reader therefore would recognize this as an interesting mix of two characters with a similar though opposite affliction in common.

There are many different representations of Sherlock Holmes, and to this day new stories focused on the character continue to be written, long after Arthur Conan Doyle wrote his last story about the iconic detective.  One of the more dreary representations of Sherlock was the period in which he was under the influence of opium.  That was based in a time when opium was not as heavily regulated as it is now.  By itself this creates a strange setting for the series as for instance there are very few series with a modern setting that would set up one of the main characters as a heroin addict.  So too is the interplay between these characters a little strange, and almost forced.  The basic concept behind this series as far is based on two different ideas, that occultists are trying to force Houdini out of the business and that Sherlock Holmes is focusing on exposing Houdini’s escape as logical tricks.  The first of these will evidently form the main plot of the series, with the presumed eventual pairing together of Houdini and Sherlock, but it is the other aspect which is a bit hollow.  Instead of the escapes being well researched, Sherlock Holmes guessed at their resolution through a number of assumptions which may or may not be the case.  This aspect of the story thus ends up a bit dry and feeling a little forced.

While there are a couple of drawbacks to this story though, the magnetism of the two characters together is there, and while the story has maybe not been set up enough to truly do both of the titular characters justice, it still is not constrained enough to not let them be themselves.  The end result is engaging enough, especially as the two start to interact in a more realistic and organic way.  In the end the writers manage to get enough interest in the story to make me want to read more, even if the start was kind of rocky.

From Shakespeare to Holmes and Houdini

Dynamite Entertainment have announced that Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery will bring their skill for literary reimagining to a new comic book miniseries event, Sherlock Holmes vs. Harry Houdini.  Best known for their acclaimed series Kill Shakespeare, Del Col and McCreery have joined with skillful artist Carlos Furuzono to bring two larger-than-life icons into conflict:  the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and real-life stage magician and stunt performer Harry Houdini.  The battle between sleuth and showman launches with its first issue in October, featuring cover variants by John Cassaday, Aaron Campbell, and Colton Worley.

In Sherlock Holmes vs. Harry Houdini #1, famed detective Sherlock Holmes and brash showman Harry Houdini must combine forces to defeat a mysterious mystic dedicated to destroying Houdini’s career and killing anyone who gets in his way.  But despite their singular purpose, the two titans have too much professional pride between them… and it’s only a matter of time until the deadliest sin has them facing off.

Del Col and McCreery took the comic book industry by storm with their creator-owned Kill Shakespeare series, launched in 2010.  In addition to their comics work, they each have found a string of success in diverse entertainment venues.  Del Col has worked in the music, film, and television industries, produced two independent feature films, and most recently assisted with the management of international pop star Nelly Furtado and her world tour.  McCreery has served in both creative and business positions for film and television companies, contributed over 1,000 stories and articles for media outlets, and also provided expert analysis for Canada’s Business News Network.

Sherlock Holmes vs. Harry Houdini #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ August Previews catalog and slated for release in October.

IDW Announces New Kill Shakespeare Comic Series Coming in June

In May, Kill Shakespeare will make the leap from comic series to board game to the delight of fans of both mediums. This June, fans will have even more to rejoice about as the award-winning comic series returns with Kill Shakespeare: The Mask of Night.

The Mask of Night is described as a pirate adventure according to the series co-creator, Anthony Del Col. The latest volume incorporates characters we’ve seen previously from other arcs, but also one of Shakespeare’s most famous heroines, Viola. Viola comes with a bit of a tweak as the creators have refashioned her into one of the coolest female pirates ever.

In The Mask of Night, we will see Hamlet, Juliet, Othello, and Shakespeare become pawns in a deadly game of survival between legendary masked pirate Captain Cesario, his first mate Viola, and the new terror on the water, Titus Andronicus’ forbidding war ship, the Lavinia.

The series also ties into the Kill Shakespeare board game which is currently running on Kickstarter. The announced cast of characters is tied directly into the playable character list for the tabletop adventure game. IDW Games has also announced that everyone who backs the Kill Shakespeare Kickstarter at the game level or higher will receive all four issues of The Mask Of Night free from comiXology as they are released.

The series’ return will be chock-full of pirate battles, vengeance, and lost love (pretty much everything you could ever want!) so don’t miss out on the high seas tales featuring your favorite Shakespearean characters!

Kickstarter Spotlight: IDW’s Kill Shakespeare…. the Game!

Today, IDW Games in cooperation with Pandasaurus Games launched a Kickstarter campaign for their first joint venture, Kill Shakespeare. The campaign’s goal is $25,000, and there will be a series of stretch goals in place that will make incremental improvements to the game for each milestone hit. With an amazing creative team in place and two world-class artists delivering the box and game art, this campaign is poised to be a huge success!

The first 250 people to back the Kill Shakespeare campaign will secure copies of the game at the deepest discount available. No matter when fans pledge during the campaign, the game will be offered $10 under suggested retail price, with free or discounted shipping around the globe!

This campaign offers fans the chance to pick up additional content ranging from comics to lithographs to a set of custom dice. Stretch goals are in place to improve the quality of the game components as well as expanding game content to include more characters and quests.

Why I Like It: I’ve loved the Kill Shakespeare comics, so to be able to play a game in that world is more than fine with me. Here’s hoping we get even more… can you say RPG?

Best Pledge: $40 gets you a copy of the game at a deep discount for the first 250 people. I pledged at this amount and kicked in some extra money for the dice game too.

Risk: LOW – The artwork for the game is complete and the only things left to do are the Kickstarter specific items. Add that on top of the fact that an established company like IDW is behind it, and I’m not too worried. I think at most the issue might be delays in the ship date due to production issues.
