Review: Roman Ritual TPB

630bcf1ca3f33240451e22da44ca25be-_sx360_ql80_ttd_

“…and upon this rock I will build my Church; and the Gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.” How can the Holy See last when an evilness spreads within, touching the core of the same institution? A new miniseries by master of horror, writer El Torres!

A cynical, and rebellious priest, with all the angst of teenager, seems to be the only who can save the church from itself in Roman Ritual. The main character John Beckett, may remind some readers of Vertigo/DC’s John Constantine in some ways. Yet, there is one key difference, John Beckett has faith. That faith makes him the churches only chance at being saved from its own corruption, and the possession of its pope.

The artwork is dark, and some times disgusting as the story goes on. Yet that works well for the novel which is focused so clearly on corruption and demonic possession. The landscapes of Rome by artist Jaime Martinez are drawn in a superb fashion.

Review: Alan Dracon #1

2016-01-amigo2-674x1024

Alan is just a bodyguard trying to make a living. But this is the future, and to survive Alan Dracon must deal with high-tech industrial moguls, genetically modified organisms… and seductive corporates. And most of them want him dead.

Alan Dracon is action and adventure in the not-so-near future brought to you by Stefano Martino.

Alan Dracon is the dear creation of Italian artist Stefano Martino, who worked on comic series such as Doctor Who, Warlord of Mars, Catwoman and George R.R. Martin’s Doorways. He is working on the European market on titles as Nosferatu and Oracle, but he never forgot his creator-owned sci-fi series Alan Dracon.

There is something almost 90’ish about this series. Evil corporations, pseudo-science, murder , and big monsters, what’s not to love. The only thing missing is comically large shoulder pads, ha. However the story is good, and amusing at times.  Along with having some great action scenes.

The black and white style is great, helping to bolster some of the darker scenes. While lessening the darkness, of some of the more humorous scenes. Even the action scenes seem to use the monochrome color-scheme to its advantage.

Review: Straitjacket TPB

Straitjacket cover

Enter into the world of Alexandra Wagner. She murdered her brother when she was child. She was institutionalized. Alex believes she protected of our world against “The Outer Darkness” with the help of her brother in the Otherside. Obviously, these are just deliriums, But, how… and why… she vanishes from the institution only to reappear later?

If Frank Miller wrote Alice in Wonderland, with help from John Carpenter, you would get Straitjacket. Except, instead of a staple of children’s literature, you get something much more twisted, and much more gory. Now this book is for mature readers, so if you frighten easily or, don’t like violence this book isn’t for you. However it you want something with good writing (El Torres is on writing duty), and at times an intricate plot, you should enjoy this insane tale.

The art by Guillermo Sanna is consistent, even if it isn’t the most colorful. Yet that minimal color works in its favor, as the chosen three color-scheme creates an atmosphere like no other. The design of the “feeders,” is creepy, in a great way.

Review: The Westwood Witches TPB

WEstwood Witches cover

Jack Kurtzberg is a successful writer of young witch romance bestsellers – and he hates it so much. Suffering from writer’s block, he decides to move back to his hometown, not knowing that his new neighbors are witches, the kind of demon worshipers that would kill anyone who could disturb their dominion in Westwood.

The Westwood Witches is across between Stephen King’s The Shining, with a large helping  of Twilight Zone, and a small dash of Stepford Wives for good measure. The big difference is this has lot more gore, violence, and of course witches. This book is definitely not for children or the faint of heart. If you are fan of graphic, occult filled graphic novels, this is one I would recommend.

If I had to describe the art style in two words; I would choose “gritty,” and “dark.”  While most of the novel is set in the small town of Westwood, the few shots we get of LA is a much more grand style. Where as Westwood, seems more small town with a secret. The characters are detailed and realistic, without being over the top. Even the more occult themed panels are superb.

Review: Sidney Hammer

sub010358-_sx360_ql80_ttd_The city of Salemscraft Wells was stalked by a serial killer years ago. When the case seemed forgotten, our intrepid and sexy journalist Sidney is called by a group of eccentric rockstars to resume the investigation… and to smash some zombie heads! An old-school mystery filled to the brim with pulp action, gore-ish comedy and curves!

All the humor and corny atmosphere of old horror B-movies, with a boost of old fashioned pulp and horror comics of the early 50’s and 60’s.  I was a little late to catch those, so I was pleasantly pleased with this slight rebirth of them here. While tales of monsters have fallen out of fashion in comics, they don’t seem to have faded away.

Honestly the main character Sidney, defiantly has a pinup art style to her. Even the other female character is drawn in a similar way. While the zombies may not be the most fearsome looking things, they add well to the B-movie art style that seems to be consistent throughout. Worth it for those looking a good one shot.

Review: Metallic Silence #1 & #2

Metallic Silence #1A story that introduces you into a dystopian future based on the songs of the Spanish electronic band AZUL y NEGRO. In a world where elites are fleeing to a new planet, there is little place for hope. Or even for music.

Combining elements of Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, and even a subtle nod to The Terminator if you look close enough. There is a lot of crossover as science fiction meets dystopian, meets cyberpunk, meets a small musical. While there is a small love story as well that helps keep the plot grounded, it manages to be a large plot of the story as Basso tries to get his love Charlotte back from the Mannequin. While Mannequin sounds like a cheesy villain name, he is a man obsessed with immortality. He believes Charlotte is the key to that. However in his quest to gain that, he kills Basso (sort of). Basso manages to survive the explosion and returns to reclaim Charlotte after a he becomes a cybernetic version of Frankenstein’s monster.

Dystopian has almost become a synonym for gritty and dark. That is apparent in the art style in both issues of this mini-series. You can see the obvious influence of the film Blade Runner in the art in terms of both the world and the characters. Even a subtle influence of Frank Miller’s Sin City, as for the most part of the world is drawn in shades of gray. In contrast to the main characters who are drawn with more color, even if that color is limited
