Picks of the Week: Garth Ennis’ Red Team #3 and 10 Other Choices

RedTeam03-Cov-ChaykinThis week is a solid week of releases and it’s a tough choice to narrow it down to a top ten, let alone a top book, but for me, one of the best new series of the year is Garth Ennis’ Red Team which sees its third issue released this week.

The series follows a disgraced team of cops and their downward spiral as they take the justice into their hands and go outside the law. The story is great, dialogue fantastic and art is solid.

This is a series for fans of cop stories, especially crooked cop stories. Easily one of my favorite series of the year, and one that I hope folks check out before its too late.

So, check out Red Team #3 and the rest of our picks for the week.

  • Garth Ennis’ Red Team #3 – See above
  • Age of Ultron #9 – This is it. One more issue until it all comes together. A lot needs to still happen, so how its pulled off in two issues….
  • All New Secret Skullkickers #1 – Off the rails fantasy awesomeness. While it might say #1, it’s the continuation of the fun fantasy series by Jim Zub.
  • Astro City #1 – Kurt Busiek’s classic series is back.
  • East of West #3 – Its wild west meets sci-fi as the horsemen of the apocalypse  wander a world familiar, but not so much.
  • Oxymoron HC – The hit indie Kickstarter project gets to the masses.
  • Rachel Rising #17 – Why aren’t you reading this series! Amazing horror, go out and find it if you can.
  • Silence & Co. – You can read our review.
  • Suicide Risk #2 – BOOM!’s new series sees regular cops dealing with heroes and villains with extraordinary power.
  • Ten Grand #2 – Joe’s Comics is back with this excellent moody series. The first issue was solid, crossing my fingers the second is just as good.
  • Ultimate Comics Ultimates #25 – Something major is about to go down in Marvel’s Ultimate universe and it’s likely starting here.

Pick of the Week – Idolized #2

Idolized is one of those series that will fall under the radar for far too many people. The series takes the American Idol formula and spins it to the super hero set with the winner getting a spot on “the” super hero team. The series follows a young girl with a secret that drives her motive in getting onto the show and winning it. The art is solid and story fantastic so far. What it really has going for it is an engaging story that has me entertained and hooked. When I went into issue #0, I thought it’d be like that other series with a similar premise, but instead, it cuts to the formula that works so well on reality television shows, driving the narrative of the show by focusing on an interesting character. It works on tv and it works for the comic so well, really breaking down what’s driven reality tv for so many years. Where the series goes and how well it can keep it up remains to be seen, but as far as books to read this week, Idolized #2 by Aspen Comics is the top of my list.

  • Idolized #2see above
  • Ultimate Comics Ultimates #16 – Marvel is hyping this issue which comes out one week after issue #15. Captain America/Steve Rogers is now President in a fractured United States. It should be interesting to see where this goes, but there’s so much potential.
  • Rachel Rising #11 – Terry Moore’s horror series has been amazing and should be on everyone’s list to read.
  • Higher Earth #5 – The plot and twists are predictable, but boy is it fun. The series revolves around a revolution in a world of infinite Earths. The fun is seeing what the creators come up with next.
  • Steed & Mrs. Peel #1 – Mark Waid is on a role, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does with these classic characters.

Pick of the Week – Daredevil #18

Checking out what’s coming out this week, there’s a lot of solid books to choose from. After a lot of internal debate, I have to go with Daredevil #18 as this week’s pick. Mark Waid‘s run on the series has been classic and the combination of amazing artists makes this one of the best comics out there by any publisher. There’s few series all the reviewers can all agree on, but it’s pretty unanimous that Daredevil is a series that has to be read and should be read by everyone, and yes it’s that good.

  • Daredevil #18 – see above
  • Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #15 and Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15 – Marvel has made their Ultimate universe, the one where anything can happen and everything does. You want a universe where everything is on the table? Here you go.
  • Revival #3 – Image Comics has a huge hit which is as much philosophical as it’s a “zombie” comic. One of my favorite of the year.
  • Extermination #4 – BOOM!’s post apocalyptic alien adventure has been a great ride, a slow one, but entertaining enough to get me coming back each month wondering what will happen next.
  • Irresistible #3  – Zenescope has an interesting series here, where a man becomes as the title says irresistible to women.

Captain America Elected President Of The United States of America!

The people have spoken—and tomorrow Steve Rogers, the man known as Captain America, becomes President Elect of the United States of America! In Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15, from writer Sam Humphries and artist Billy Tan, Captain America’s made his dramatic return and publicly saved America from an insidious new enemy in one of his most harrowing battles yet. But when all the dust settles, Steve Rogers is about to get the biggest surprise of his life—he’s won the special election for the Presidency via write-in! What does this mean for his future as Captain America? Can he be a President who fights on the frontlines?

Then next week, in Ultimate Comics Ultimates #16, Humphries and artist Luke Ross, Steve Rogers accepts the position of President of The United States- and not a moment too soon! A deadly villain with a personal tie to the Ultimates is about to enact his endgame, one which promises to leave no hero unscathed. Now Captain America must find a way to safeguard this country both as a President and as a super hero—but can he do both?
