Pick of the Week – Graveyard of Empires #4

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Graveyard of Empires #4, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how this Afghanistan War/Zombie mash-up turns out. It’s been a wait, and when I saw the comic was coming out, I scratched my head and forgot we didn’t see an ending to the story, but it’s a story I’ve enjoyed the first three issues and I want to see how it’s wrapped up. For that anticipation, it’s my pick of the week.

  • Graveyard of Empires #4see above
  • Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye #7I love IDW’s Transformer’s series, they can do nothing wrong. It’s great stuff that makes me jazzed about the cartoon I loved from the 80s.
  • Irresistable #1This new comic from Zenescope has me intrigued. You’ll need to read it, I don’t want to spoil it.
  • Ultimate Comics Ultimates #13Um, this is a series where I never know what to expect. The holy shit moments have piled up, and while there’s luls, the overall story keeps me on my toes.
  • New Deadwardians #5It’s zombies meets Masterpiece Theater… how can you not like it?!

Pick of the Week – Atomic Robo: Flying She-Devils of the South Pacific #1

I love Atomic Robo, that’s why my pick for the week is Atomic Robo: Flying She-Devils of the South Pacific #1.  The Atomic Robo comic book’s that I’ve read have been pure fun that’s appropriate for kids and adults alike.  Its that great humor that appeals to kids and also some jokes that are there for their parents too.

The art is great and writing top notch.  It’s rare that I can say parents and kids will enjoy a comic, and that comic is written in such a way to not insult either’s intelligence.  If you’ve never read an Atomic Robo comic, do yourself a favor and pick up the first issue of the seventh volume of the series that hits shelves this week.  And, while you’re there get more to satiate your Atomic Robo fix with Atomic Robo: Real Science Adventures #3.

  • Atomic Robo: Flying She-Devils of the South Pacific #1 – see above
  • Transformers: More Than Meets the Eyes #6I’ve been loving IDW’s two Transformers series that bring fun I haven’t experienced since the original cartoon.
  • New Deadwardians #4I have no idea how to describe this series that mixes a murder mystery with PBS Masterpiece Theater.
  • Idolized #0Aspen has been hyping this series and it’s enough to get me intrigued. Super heroes meet American Idol.  Sounds interesting enough for me.
  • Ultimate Comics Ultimates #12This series throws it all out there.  I never know what to expect.

Pick of the Week – Pilot Season: Theory of Everything #1

Top Cow’s Pilot Season has been pretty solid with some issues standing out more than others (we’ll have our review of all of them soon), but Pilot Season: Theory of Everything #1 is really cool and fun.  There was something about this comic that kept me on my toes.  The concept is interesting, the art solid, story really good.  Everything clicks with the issue.  If you’ve never checked out an issue of Pilot Season, this is definitely a good one to check out.

  • Pilot Season: Theory of Everything #1 – see above
  • FF #12 – Did you read Fantastic Four #600?  That alone is reason to pick this issue up.
  • Ultimate Comics Ultimates #4 – A gritty Marvel universe where everything is on the table.  Nuff said.
  • Skullkickers #12 – An off the rails D&D like campaign that’s totally fun and entertaining.
  • Star Trek #3 – I’ve never been a big Star Trek fan, but IDW’s comic has me hooked.  It just feels right.

The Ultimate Comics Universe Makes Comics History In 2012!

Official Press Release

The Ultimate Comics Universe Makes Comics History In 2012!

Celebrate the New Year with the biggest change to world of digital comics in 2012! Beginning with January’s Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #6, all Ultimate Comics Universe titles will be polybagged with a code for a FREE digital copy on the Marvel Comics app for iOS and Android devices at no extra cost! In February, these codes (redeemable for the same print issue as purchased) expand to the rest of the Ultimate Comics Universe, as new arcs begin with Ultimate Comics X-Men #7 and Ultimate Comics Ultimates #7.

“The groundbreaking stories told each month in the Ultimate Comics Universe are some of the best comics being published today,” said David Gabriel, Senior Vice-President of Sales, Marvel Entertainment. “Looking at the tremendous response to our digital copy code offer with Avenging Spider-Man #1, it’s clear that this is something fans want to see more of and we’re delivering it on a scale never seen before, with no extra cost to retailers or fans—and historic benefits for our retail partners.”

The Ultimate Comics line made history in 2010 with the first line of comics to be offered digitally on the same day print editions hit stores, beginning with Ultimate Comics Thor #1. With its inception in 2000, the Ultimate Comics Universe reimagined the world’s most popular super heroes, including Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine and more, for a new generation. It continues to be one of the most acclaimed and best-selling comics initiatives of the last decade, with the 2011 introduction of an all-new Spider-Man heralded as one of the most important moves in pop culture history.

In 2012, no fan can miss Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Ultimate Comics Ultimates and Ultimate Comics X-Men, as they begin red-hot new storylines and each issue includes a code for a FREE digital copy on the Marvel Comics app

Retailers: Check The Diamond Retailer site for a detailed FAQ addressing any questions you might have about this new initiative, historic benefits to retailers and the Marvel Mailer for more information.
