Review: The Movement #1

3015012-movementWe are faceless. We are limitless. We see all. And we do not forgive.

Who defends the powerless against the GREEDY and the CORRUPT? Who protects the homeless and poverty-stricken from those who would PREY upon them in the DARK OF NIGHT?

When those who are sworn to protect us abuse their power, when toxic government calls down super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace…finally, there is a force, a citizen’s army, to push order BACK.

Let those who abuse the system know this as well: We have our OWN super humans now. They are not afraid of your badges or Leagues. And they will not be SILENCED.

We are your neighbors. We are your co-workers. And we are your children.

The Movement was billed as DC Comics taking on the Occupy Movement, it was to dive in to the 99%. Having read this first issue, I don’t see it. The series is more Teen Titans with a “C” list cast than a political tinged comic.

The comic isn’t bad at all. It’s good and a decent read. To see a new series featuring not big names, something new, is great. I think what it was pitched as, might work against it.

The fist issue is all set up. The series takes place on Coral City where powered teens have declared an area under their protection, directly confronting police in the first issue. This isn’t so much Occupy as it’s Black Bloc. There’s direct confrontation instead of non-violence and there seems to be some leadership, again not exactly and Occupy thing.

But, the series does seem to be setting the ground work for what would happen if powered individuals used their powers to help their local community. That could be interesting and something new.

While the first issue didn’t blow me away, it was interesting enough for me to check out the next one to see what Simone has in store for us.

Picks of the Week: The Movement #1 and 12 more!

The Movement #1 coverReally the picks this week should be all of the awesome comic books being released for Free Comic Book Day this Saturday… but, when it comes to comics for sale, The Movement #1 is our pick for this week.

We are faceless.

Writer Gail Simone and artist Freddie Williams II take on the 99% within the DC Universe.

  • The Movement #1 – see above
  • The Activity #12 – The heart pounding series is flying under the radar. It’s kick-ass covert action from America’s kick-ass military teams. This issue focuses on one of the character’s previous stint in Delta Force.
  • Age of Ultron #7 – I’ve generally been down on this event, but the last issue kicked it up a notch with some actual action and story movement. After the actions of last issue, I have no idea what to expect now.
  • All-New X-Men #11 – One team member has left to join Cyclops and lets see how the rest react.
  • Charismagic Vol. 2 #1 – Part of Aspen’s “10 for 10” means a $1 issue of the debut issue of the second volume of this excellent series.
  • Fubar: American History Z – This alternative American history is full of zombie goodness. An awesome indie comic series.
  • Hawkeye #10 – This is one of the best series out there people, now read it!
  • Invincible Universe #2 – Want a solid super hero series not by the big two? Well, here you go.
  • Polarity #2 – The first issue knocked it out of the park dealing with a bi-polar artist. A solid debut, so get into it while you can!
  • The Red Ten #3 – Ten Little Indians done with super heroes. Yes please. Another awesome indie comic.
  • Suicide Risk #1 – A new ongoing by Mike Carey sees a cop take on super powered villains.
  • Superior Spider-Man #9 – Dan Slott has me enjoy Spider-Man, which is impressive. One of my favorite Marvel NOW! comics.
  • Ten Grand #1 – It’s the return of Joe’s Comics with a new series by J. Michael Straczynski and Ben Templesmith involving a mob enforcer who wants to be with his love.

DC Comics Provides a First Look at The Movement

Back in February, DC Comics announced the launch of the new ongoing monthly and politically charged series, The Movement. Hitting stores next month, The Movement #1 comes to you from the creative team of writer Gail Simone and artist Freddie Williams II.

Talking to Comic Vine, Simone said:

The fun of something like The Movement is that it’s a logical extension of how citizens who aren’t media giant journalists, Gotham billionaires, or mythical princesses view the way power works in the DCU. How does someone feel when the world is full of superheroes, but all the problems of the world still exist?

In another interview she said:

I don’t think the book is about liberal vs. conservative. It’s about values that comics have always been about, the struggle against injustice on behalf of the little guy, the powerless and innocent. That’s pretty bi-partisan.

As for what characters will be appearing in the series? Simone says it’s “mostly new characters,” but there’s some with ties in the DCU. We do know of two characters appearing, Katharsis, the brutal avenger from Knightfall arc in Batgirl, and Tremor, “a wonderful badass character” who appeared in the pre-New 52 Secret Six.

DC Comics Takes on Occupy With The Movement and The Green Team

It’s the 1% plus the 99%! Today, DC Comics announced two new series that join their “Edge” family of titles. The two new comics are The Movement and The Green Team. Each tackles themes

The Movement hits shelves May 1 and comes from the creative team of writer Gail Simone and artist Freddie Williams II. Simone has said the story is an idea she’s had for some time. The comic is about power, who owns it, who uses it, and who suffers from its abuse.

As we increasingly move to an age where information is currency, you get these situations where a single viral video can cost a previously unassailable corporation billions, or can upset the power balance of entire governments. And because the sources of that information are so dispersed and nameless, it’s nearly impossible to shut it all down.

The Green Team comes to shelves May 22 from the Eisner Award-winning creative team Art Baltazar and Franco teaming up with artist Ig Guara.

Baltazar teased:

The real question is: Can money buy you anything in the DC universe? Would it make you powerful? Can it make you a hero? Can money make you…Super?

Franco has said about the project:

If you had unlimited wealth, could you use that to make the lives of people better? Would you help your fellow man? Would you buy powers? You need to read this and find out.

Bryan Young at Big Shiny Robot has interviews with Gail Simone and Art Baltazar and Franco.

The Occupy Movement has become a popular topic in comics leading to the formation of Occupy Comics.
