Review: The Mighty Thor #705

The epic showdown years in the making finally explodes across the heavens. Thor battles the unstoppable Mangog, with the fate of all Asgardia hanging in the balance. Is Thor willing to pay the ultimate price in order to save the gods? The tragic and heroic story of Jane Foster finally reaches its heart-rending zenith. You knew it was coming. The Death of Thor is here at last.

“The Death of Mighty Thor” comes to this with its sixth part featuring something we all knew was coming but the “how” was still up in the air. Writer Jason Aaron continues his epic story of Thor(s) as the showdown between Mangog and Thor continues to its firey conclusion.

As a piece of the greater story, The Mighty Thor #705 is satisfying in some ways but on its own there’s a lack of emotional punch or takeaway. Without a deep connection to the characters it all feels a little anticlimactic and muted. Whether that’s on purpose or not, it’s an interesting choice and instead of delivering a battle that feels like it could be one for the ages just in this issue alone, instead we get some smarts thrown in to wrap it all up.

The comic though feels like we’ve seen it before with moments and lines that feel repeated. Like Wonder Woman charging across the “No Mans Land,” here we get a similar line and moment of “I am no God.” While it works, much like the comic itself, it’s familiar and in some ways feels a little safe. The entire issue has that in some way.

The art by Russell Dauterman looks beautiful at times but at others it’s difficult to tell exactly what’s going on. I was left staring at pages trying to decipher all of the action though each little bit looks great. That’s partially due to Matthew Wilson‘s coloring which makes the heat feel like it’s coming off of the page.

I can’t say exactly what was expected of the issue but it definitely wasn’t this. While it’s a satisfying conclusion in some ways it also feels like it’s one that’s playing it safe so that Odinson can return to hold the mantle of Thor. Aaron has weaved an epic Thor run and will continue to do so, so in some ways there was an expectation that despite the build up, some different ending might have surprised us. While not a bad issue overall, The Mighty Thor #705 lacks an expected punch.

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Top Picks: The Mighty Thor #705 (Marvel) – To say I am looking forward to this may be a lie, but I am in a way. Jane has been an excellent Thor, and we see Odinson seems to be back in the mantle with Marvel’s Fresh Start announcement, but Aaron usually keeps us guessing. What an excellent run this has been.

The Avengers #685 (Marvel) – We are talking about Banner Hulk vs Red Hulk in Iron Patriot armor, or Iron Hulk. That sentence alone is enough to grab this issue.

Kill or Be Killed #17 (Image) – While I changed to trade in reading this series, this will always be a top pick for me. It is a great series full of intrigue and suspense, and Brubaker does that better than anyone.

Batman #43 (DC Comics) – I have enjoyed this arc with Ivy pulling her puppet strings like vines wrapped around Batman, Catwoman, The Justice League and more. I am excited to see how King ends this. Also, it’s drawn by Mikel Janin.

Doctor Strange: Damnation #3 (Marvel) – This has been off the wall craziness that I expected with this event/series, and I cannot wait to read and see more of it.

Top Pick: Ninja-K #5 (Valiant) – This sleek thriller is nigh on perfect in every way a comic should be; writing, art and general presentation. I can’t wait to read this again in print to see Tomas Giorello’s masterful artwork as it is supposed to be seen.

Batman #43 (DC Comics) – The last issue in this series was utter shite. This has to be better, right…? Honestly, I doubt it, but you gotta hope, right?

Usagi Yojimbo: The Hidden #1 (Dark Horse) – I’ve been meaning to check this series out for years because a friend of mine kept raving about it, but I was always waiting for a jumping on point – which I always seemed to miss. Not this time!

Top Pick: Cave Carson Has an Interstellar Eye #1 (DC’s Young Animal) – Pulp adventure is the best way to describe this series and this start to the second volume doesn’t disappoint. This really reminds me of the old serial pulp movies and comic strips and that’s just a whole lot of fun.

Deathbed #2 (Vertigo) – The first issue had me laughing out loud, so I’m in for the second.

Infinity 8 #1 (Lion Forge Comics) – A new sci-fi series from Lion Forge. The concept is intriguing, eight different 3 issue arcs explores an agents’ investigation into multiple plots that could lead to their space cruisers’ doom.

James Bond: The Body #3 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I’ve loved the first two issues which is a much grittier take on Bond than we’ve seen on film. Each issue is a standalone story that focuses on one aspect of Bond’s body and goes from there. The first explored all of the damage he’s experienced, the second his mind, the third? We’ll see!

Weapon H #1 (Marvel) – I’ll admit I’m skeptical about this series taking the character that’s a blend of Hulk and Wolverine. A whole story revolving just around him? So, we’ll see how this one goes and if it can beat my low expectations.

Review: The Mighty Thor #704

When we last left our hero, Jane Foster has been told if she uses Mjolnir one more time, she will die given each use will increase her cancer but back in Asgardia, Mangog has been unleashed and someone will have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

There are two issues for the final arc of the Jane Foster version of Thor which is leaving many fans, myself included, saddened at the possibility. Though I am being positive and hope for the best for whatever happens. In the meantime, The Mighty Thor #704 has certainly a lot to go on.

For starters, throughout much of the issue besides the fight with Mangog in Asgardia, there are sections of pages dedicated to Jane Foster’s past dealing with the death of her parents and family in each section of her life. They’re the most poignant moments of the issue given its reflection on Jane’s predicament and plays a lot to her character development and it’s to a point where you feel for her. You completely understand especially via her narration about her feelings.

Jason Aaron really nails these moments, never holding back the emotional baggage that would come out of these type of moments in life, whether it’d be in the past or the current moments of the issue especially given a moment between her and Bonnie. And while the entire sections are poignant to the point of tears-the end of the book at least shows a true testament to her character to the point of seeing one of the greatest panels of the Jane Foster Thor design ever-complete with an awesomely badass quote.

The Asgardia stuff is well done too especially given a moment between Loki and Freyja. The fight and Mangog certainly demonstrates that even Thor Odinson is helpless against the great beast, the entire situation just looks flat out dire and Aaron is certainly good at upping the stakes for his stories-even on an epic scale from 1 to 10. Aaron always has a knack for balancing action and emotion and it’s no different here.

The art by Russell Dauterman is extremely well done as are the colors by Matthew Wilson who gives the two different types of scenes between the Earth hospital and Asgardia scenes very distinct looks. The Earth hospital moments looking gray, degraded and sad while the Asgardia scenes are vibrant in color but also looking a bit grit. They both have a different feel but never to the point of jarring.

The Mighty Thor may be coming to a close soon but if this issue is anything to go off on, it may at least go out with a bang. Check it out!
