Either the rumors are all over and full of it, or Spider-Man 3 is putting it all on the table. Alfred Molina is the latest actor who is rumored to be reprising their role in Sony‘s Spider-Man universe. The actor would return as Otto Octavious, the villain from Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man 2 (different trilogy). Neither Sony nor Marvel commented on the news.
The actor had been rumored for some time and was spotted on the set but there have been some confirmations to various news organizations that he’ll play some sort of role, though it’s unknown as to what extent.
Molina joins Jamie Foxx who also will return as Electro. Foxx’s Electro terrorized Andrew Garfield‘s Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Foxx, in a now deleted Instagram post, hinted that Maguire and Garfield would appear in the upcoming film.
Marvel and Sony have been leaning into the “multiverse” making this sort of thing possible. Sony’sSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a massive hit both in grosses and awards. In that film, multiple “Spider-Man” from around the multiverse teamed up and came together, a riff on the popular Marvel comic storyline. Marvel Studio’s next Doctor Strange film has hinted at a focus on the multiverse. It’s the next logical progression for Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and directions to take it. Benedict Cumberbatch who stars in that film will appear in Spider-Man 3 which stars Tom Holland.
Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, and Tony Revolori will all return to the film with director Jon Watts back at the helm. Watts directed the first two Holland films. Spider-Man 3 is currently slated to be released on December 17, 2021.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jamie Foxx is in “final talks” to reprise his role as Electro in the next installment of Spider-Man starring Tom Holland and being produced by Marvel and Sony.
Jon Watts who directed the first two films will return for the third film which has a tentative release date of December 17, 2021.
Most of the cast including Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, and Tony Revolori will return. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are producing.
Foxx played Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which starred Andrew Garfield. The film earned $708.9 million globally but was considered a failure which led to Sony and Marvel striking their eventual deal that brought Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speculation has run rampant as to how this might happen and if this will be the same character brought over through the multiverse established in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Electro is one of the original members of the Spider-Man rogues group the Sinister Six and the first two films have featured members of that group. Sony has been attempting to create their own Spider-Man universe which saw the release of Venom and has numerous other projects in the works. A film focused on the Sinister Six has been rumored for quite some time. The second set of Spider-Man films with Garfield teased the group which originally consisted of Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter. Five of the six characters have appeared in previous Spider-Man films. Two in the Toby Maguire films, one with Garfield, and two with Holland.
J.K. Simmons returned in Spider-Man: Far From Home as J. Jonah Jameson, a role he played in previous films, but the brief cameo gave no indication this was the same Jameson from the previous Spider-Man films. Simmons’ Jameson didn’t appear in The Amazing Spider-Man films but he has also reprised the role for animated shows like Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Maximum Overload, Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and Ultimate Spider-Man.
Transformers: Age of Extinction ruled the 2014 box office, bringing in $1.087 billion at the box office. It was the top earning film worldwide of the year earning hundreds of millions more than the next film. It was also the most profitable. Taking away its estimated budget, the film made $877.4 million what was 4.18 times its budget, the best of the bunch for both stats.
Domestically, Guardians of the Galaxy was the top earner, bringing in $333 million. Globally that film earned $772.6 million.
But, when it comes to films with the best legs, Snowpiercer blows all the competition out of the water. The film opened to limited release, and earned $171,187 its first weekend domestically. The film went on to earn $4.6 million. That’s an earning of 26.66 times what it opened with. Fellow small film We Are the Best!, which was based on a graphic novel, earned 10.22 times what it opened with.
All together films based on comics, or had a comic tie-in, brought in $7.7 billion. Films based on Marvel properties earned $2.94 billion of that.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes remained in the top spot at the box office. The film earned an additional $36 million, only a 50 percent drop from the previous week’s debut, which isn’t bad since other sequels this summer have seen a much sharper decline.
In other geek movie news… Transformers: Age of Extinction was fifth this past weekend, and to date, the film has earned $227.2 million. The film has a chance to challenge for the top spot as far as domestic grosses.
Domestically, the top comic related films of the summer are Captain America: The Winter Soldier, still holding strong with $258.4 million, X-Men: Days of Future Past is in third at $230.5 million. Transformers is fourth. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is at $201.6 million for sixth. 300: Rise of An Empire is at 17 with $106.6 million, and Edge of Tomorrow has earned $96.6 million. Snowpiercer is at $3.5 million.
Globally, thinks are a bit different. Transformers: Age of Extinction tops things globally with $886.3 million earned. X-Men is second at $736.3 million. Cap is third at $712.7 million. Edge of Tomorrow has earned $357.9 million. 300: Rise of An Empire has earned $331.1 million. Snowpiercer has earned $83.7 million.
It’s not much of a surprise, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topped the weekend box office earning an estimated $73 million. That debut is about a 33% improvement from 2011’s Planet of the Apes which debuted with $54.8 million.
The film’s audience was 58% male and 55% over the age of 25. Diversity was also present with the crowd roughly 48% Caucasian, 23% African-American, 16% Hispanic, and 14% Asian. The film received an A- CinemaScore and is currently at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
When it comes to other comic related movies, Transformers: Age of Extinction dropped to second, earning $16.5 million. Domestically the film has earned $209 million and internationally $543.5 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past was in 16th place adding a little over $1 million to bring the domestic total to $229.2 million. Internationally the film has earned $731.4 million.
Snowpiercer added $677,000 to it’s total and brings the domestic amount to $2.7 million. Internationally the film has earned $80.2 million. Interestingly in this third week of release the film was released on video on demand, so the amount earned that way isn’t reflected in the total.
As far as worldwide grosses for 2014 of comic related movies, Transformers is now on top with $752.5 million, X-Men is second at $731.4 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is third at $712.4 million, The Amazing Spider-Man 2is fourth at $705 million, the Edge of Tomorrow is in tenth place at $350.6 million, 300: Rise of an Empire is twelfth with $331.1 million, Snowpiercer is 33rd with $82.9 million, and We Are the Best!has earned $157,000 to be at spot 150. According to reports, the Fourth of July weekend was weak at the box office. Without any blockbuster competition,Transformers: Age of Extinctionremained at the top of the box office with an estimated $36.4 million. That has the film dropping 64% from the previous weekend and in two weeks it has racked up a domestic total of $714.7 million. Overseas the film has topped $400 million already.
As far as other “comic book” movies Edge of Tomorrow, which is based on the Japanese light novel/manga series All You Need Is Kill, fell to #10 in its fifth weekend. The film added $3.6 million which brings its domestic total to $90.9 million. The film has earned $248.6 million overseas.
