A Quickstart is Now Available for Forteller Games’ Debut RPG, Sunset

Sunset

Forteller Games has launched a free quickstart for its debut roleplaying game, Sunset. Available exclusively on DriveThruRPG, the quickstart offers an introduction to the rules, character creation, artwork, and gameplay via a sample adventure.

Content Warning: Sunset allows players to deal with, process, and introspect on life and death. As such, this game deals with death, suicide, violent crimes, real-world abhorrent acts, and the human psyche. Play with understanding and care with your fellow players. That said, you can substitute aspects that your table is uncomfortable with.

Empowering Homebrewers
Hedron was built by homebrewers for homebrewers, and the marketplace reflects that ethos. With features like a customizable mechanics editor, graphical map-making tools, and detailed campaign management resources, the platform has long been a go-to destination for GMs who want to craft their own unique RPG worlds.

The new Hedron Marketplace marks a significant milestone in the platform’s journey, transforming it into a full-fledged ecosystem for TTRPG creators and fans. Whether you’re a first-time GM looking to share a campaign or a seasoned publisher with an expansive RPG world to sell, Hedron is the place to make your mark in the world of tabletop gaming.

In Sunset, players, known in the game as Threads, are actively facing their own deaths through a process called Life Review. Guided by the Death Master, Threads will experience a series of pivotal memories, attempting to unweave lies in order to earn a parlay with Death and bargain for more time.

Sunset is a rules-light system that leverages the Deck of Many Dice to provide rich storytelling opportunities. The game is played in a series of memory locations called a Weave, collaboratively created by the players and the Death Master. Each location can truly be anything, from a bustling city to a quiet meadow. Players draw cards from the deck to determine the outcome of their actions. An alternative dice pool ruleset using a handful of d4 and d6 dice is included as well.

Despite its heavy subject matter, creators Michael F. Tomasek Jr., Adam Lehenbauer, and Thomas St Pierre aimed for a feeling and theme of hope punk – revealing hope in the face of challenges and acting as a counter to pessimism.

The free quickstart is a small slice of the full game and serves as your start into the world of Sunset. Player feedback will be taken into account for the final product. The Sunset Core Rulebook will be available in 2025, packed with implemented feedback, new adventures, slicker character creation, and a sensitivity reader. A series of sourcebooks, splat books, and more supplements will be also available in the near future.

The free quickstart includes:

  • Over 60 free pages for you to read through and enjoy as the Death Master (with a special section for you) or with your fellow Threads
  • Five printable pre-gens to get your game started (though you can make your own characters as you wish through Character Creation)
  • Form-fillable blank character sheet
  • Bookmarked table of contents, alt text, and checked for screen readers to make reading through it easier and accessible
  • Glossary, introduction, and more tools to get you immersed into the game
  • A 40-60 minute adventure that delves into the horrors of modern life
  • Rules for one to five players, not including the Death Master

A Kickstarter campaign for Sunset will launch sometime in early 2025, with the full release planned for later in the same year. The free quickstart is available now exclusively via DriveThruRPG.

SOMETIMES ALL YOU CAN DO IS GO OUT WITH GUNS BLAZING…
In the noir tradition of Chandler and Spillane comes SUNSET, a two-fisted tale of revenge and redemption. On the surface, Nick Bellamy looks like any other veteran retiree left behind by a modern world. In reality, Nick is a former enforcer, who stole a fortune and years of freedom from his former mob boss. Now, in the twilight of his life, Nick will lose everything he cares about except two things: revenge… and the chance to die with his guns blazing.

Writer CHRISTOS GAGE (Avengers Academy, GI Joe: Cobra) and artist JORGE LUCAS (THE DARKNESS) promise to hit hard with Minotaur Press’s first original graphic novel that will make you forget all about your Prius and organic whole-grain trans-fat-free diet.

Top Cow First LookI’ll just cut to the chase when it comes to Top Cow First Look, this is a must buy.  Six fantastic stories for $4.99.  Less than $1 an issue, this is a no brainer.  So, where do I begin with each tale, I guess it’s easiest to take them one at a time and just praise each of them in their own little way with a modified review.

Genius is written by Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman with art by Troy Peteri.  Someone’s united all of the gangs in Los Angeles.  One cop believes this person exists and the LAPD is dealing with a very bright individual.  But would anyone believe that leader is a woman?  The story is original, the art is great and I wanted more and more.  This kick ass story starts off this steal.  Rating: 9

Sunset, takes on a man who has a mysterious past.  Written by Christos Gage and the art by Jorge Lucas, this is a mix of Dirty Harry or Gran Torino.  A revenge tale with a lot of ass kicking.  The entire issue is a build, and ends just as it’s getting good.  Great story, and great art.  Rating: 9

Mysterious Ways is the weakest of the bunch, but still really good.  Written by Jason Rubin with pencils by Tyler Kirkham and inks by Sal Regla is the story of a gruesome murder and some spiritual things behind it.  My biggest issue with this story is it’s a bit choppy and part just don’t make sense.  Still the art is tight, and it’s entertaining.  Rating: 8

Black Vault is something I didn’t see coming.  To say why it’s so good is to reveal the twist at the end.  This story written by B. Clay Moore and art by Nelson Blake II takes place on the International Space Station and involves a very mysterious crew who arrive with a cargo that’s not quite what it seems.  This has tons of potential and I want to see where it goes.  Rating: 9.5

The final two entries are from Minotaur Press who are being picked up by Top Cow.

Echoes by the brilliant Joshua Hale Fialkov with art by Rashan Ekedal is so beyond twisted and so freaking good.  This a psycological thriller along with the likes of Silence of the Lambs.  You know where this is going, and the pacing and build up are perfect.  I love the black and white art (it’s a perfect fit) and can’t imagine what comes next.  This is so good I hope folks are seriously taking a look at it for the big or small screen.  Rating: 10

The final story of the bunch is Last Mortal, written by John Mahoney and Filip Sablik with art by Thomas Nachlik.  A very interesting tale that doesn’t reveal what’s going on until the very last panel.  It’s one story that crosses over into something totally different.  Again this is a black and white comic, which works for it.  A very creative and engaging beginning that sucks you right in.  Rating: 9
