Why Wasn’t The Walking Dead #163 February’s Best Selling Comic?

On Friday we reported Diamond Comic Distributor‘s initial release about February’s top selling comics. The stats saw Image Comics see a massive bump in unit share during the month built off of the back of The Walking Dead #163 which was sold for just 25 cents. The issue sold over 750,000 copies but wasn’t the top selling comic of the month. That honor went to Star Wars: Darth Maul #1. But, why was that the case? I asked Diamond for clarification as to the reason for this.

There’s nothing nefarious about this anomaly. According to Diamond:

The way the charts are formatted with comics that are promotionally priced below $1.00 is that they do not count on our top charts, but their retail dollar and unit sales do count toward the publisher’s overall market share numbers.

Review: Star Wars: Darth Maul #1

Bred on hate, fear, and anger…steeped in the ways of darkness…and trained to kill. Darth Maul’s time as apprentice to Darth Sidious has long been cloaked in shadows, but at last we will reveal his tale of revenge. From writer Cullen Bunn and artist Luke Ross comes a tale of rage unleashed as Darth Maul prepares for his first encounter with the Jedi.

One of my favorite Siths’ returns in Star Wars: Darth Maul #1. This series takes place before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace as things fall in place for the Jedi’s eventual downfall. While you think the character is straightforward based on his brief live action appearance, Bunn adds the depth we’ve seen in further depictions such as we’ve seen in the animated series and portrays Darth Maul as uneasy, waiting for his master’s plan to begin. Stuck biding time Darth Maul’s anger and hatred for his own master begins to appear as he is forced to deal with pirates.

The art by Ross is well done and polished. The issue reveals in enertaining art some of the galaxy’s most dangerous creatures, that the Sith apprentice hunts. Ross also shows the natural diversity of life and worlds in the Star Wars universe, something the sci-fi universe is known for. The combat scenes are interesting and fans will be happy as they show off Darth Maul’s iconic double-bladed lightsaber.
