Review: Heroines #1

This message is for any woman blessed with extraordinary abilities. The world gets scarier every day. Are you fighting to make it a better place? Or are you leaving it to the guys? How’s that working out? This isn’t about showing men I can do it better. I’m just a smart, capable person with superpowers and I want to do my part. I’m willing to bet there are others like me. I want to meet you. It’s time for us heroines to get in the game!

Comic creator Ted Naifeh is a name where you can expect quality entertainment when you see it. Heroines is his latest series and it kicks off with an oversized debut issue that’s a hell of a lot of fun and launches what hopefully will be an ever expanding comic superhero universe.

Published by Space Goat Publishing, Heroines stars Marcy Madison a recent college graduate who decides she wants to become a superhero (her powers are light based) and is spoken down to and harrassed a bit by this world’s equivalent of the Justice League. Deciding she doesn’t want to deal with the sexism and stupidity, she ventures off to start her own superhero group led by women.

This double sized first issue introduces us to it all and what feels like all of the key players in a way that not only did it feel like this was a superhero world I’d been reading for years, but also had me excited to see what’s next. This is a series that wears its feminism proudly and has no problem showing women can kick-ass and also look different.

Naifeh gives us a solid mix of characters, races, and backgrounds though at times some feel a bit like it relies a bit too much on stereotypes and tropes. It’s not bad, but it’s a bit familiar at times and my one wish was some of these characters broke their stereotypes. The black superhero shouldn’t have to be the “street” character fighting drug dealers for example.

Naifeh also delivers humor throughout, especially when it comes to some of the quirkier sides of the superheroes. There’s very little held back and what’s little said often lets your imagination run wild with the crazy possibilities.

The art too is fantastic with Naifeh’s style feeling familiar but also fresh in its own way. This feels like an “indie” comic and that’s not a bad thing. The characters all look unique and there’s a roughness about it all that enhances the series in its own way. The action is great too and just the flow and look to it all makes it feel like a well thought out series in the characters and design.

Heroines #1 is a comic I expected to be good because of Naifeh and quickly has me excited to see what comes next in it. Hopefully the series is big enough that it can be expanded with some spin-offs because in one issue it has me interested in everything presented and wanting to see more.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Paul

Top Pick: Secret Empire Uprising #1 (Marvel) – Black Widow will not allow Steve Rogers and Hydra to operate any longer, so she’s taking some of the younger heroes with her to take him down once and for all. I’m pretty sure they’re not going to have Widow put a bullet into Steve Rogers, but I am excited to see her and her team go into action and take out the Hydra threat.

Cable #1 (Marvel) – I’m a fan of the character and I really liked having him join the Unity Squad in Uncanny Avengers, so I am really interested in a solo series with Cyclops’ little boy. Just hoping it’s better then the Cable and X-Force series *cringe*

Generation X #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was underwhelming, but I am a fan boy so I’ll check out what the second has to offer. I’m hoping that it was just a shaky take off and things get more interesting.

Hulk #6 (Marvel) – This has been a fantastic series from the first issue, exploring Jen and her PTSD and her struggle to keep the Hulk within in check…but I have a feeling things are going to turn green soon.

Secret Empire #3 (Marvel) – I have not been impressed with this series at all….but it is on my list just to follow along and watch Steve and his Nazi Hydra be taken down and have this whole mess put behind us.

Brett

Top Pick: Motor Girl #6 (Abstract Studios) – Any week Motor Girl is out, it’s on the top of my pick list. The newest series from Terry Moore is quirky, funny, and touching, and the more I read, the more I fall in love with it. This is shaping up to be my favorite comic of the year.

Blood Bowl: More Guts, More Glory #1 (Titan Comics) – The tabletop miniature game comes to comics and as a fan of the game I can’t wait to read the comics and hoping this miniseries becomes an ongoing.

Heroines #1 (Space Goat Publishing) – Writer and artist Ted Naifeh doing a superhero series has me intrigued and excited.

Namwolf #2 (Albatross Funnybooks) – The first issue was weird and twisted and exactly what I expected so I’m beyond excited to read more of this series whose name spells it all out, it’s about a soldier in Vietnam who is also a werewolf.

New Humanz #1 (Titan1 Studios) – A new(ish) publisher always gets me interested and this one sounds like a new comic universe that’s worth checking out. The story is about a former CIA agent and his daughter who are sent through time to 2226 and she becomes a cyborg.

Review: Evil Dead 2: Revenge of Dracula

EVLDDRAC_CVR_BThe Evil Dead franchise has seen a life that has extended nearly 30 years since the first movie and continues on in a new TV series on Starz and multiple comics book series. It has spawned two sequels starring Bruce Campbell and a remake which starred a female Ash although was in the same spirit, did not quite live up to the originals. Which then gave the world the TV series, which stars the original actor and introduces some new ones, while never forgetting that horror does not need to completely serious. The comic series tends to also strike the same balance between horror and comedy.

This is where it gets interesting, as many of the publishers are huge fans of the series, as the character lives on at two publishing houses, Dynamite ad SGP. At Dynamite, the incarnation of Ash in the Army of Darkness movies, lives in his own universe, with the occasional crossover with just about every character at Dynamite from Xena to President Obama. At SGP, this incarnation of Ash is the one that lives on in the Evil Dead 2 universe and has his usual run-ins with dead-ites and other supernatural creatures. Both incarnations get Ash ‘s cynical wiseass ways in the most delightful way, while putting their own spin on it.

In SGP’s latest effort, Evil Dead 2: Revenge of Dracula, in this particular story, the Ex- mortis has revived Dracula, which for some reason Ash finds his mission to return to hell. As the solicitation expertly describes:

Dracula, the Prince of Darkness becomes the Prince of the Evil Dead Universe when his undead path crosses with Ash. When the stolen Ex-Mortis is used to revive Dracula, Ash must be the wooden stake that sends him back to the grave. But when Drac reveals the Ex-Mortis has also revived an even greater monster, Ash and the vampire must team up to stop it with the help of the Kandarian dagger.

Throughout this first issue, the reader not only gets re-acclimated to Ash but how insane this world he lives in is, as we get the hero version of Ash in this series, versus the Indiana Jones version Dynamite tends to push.

Altogether, a fun ride of a first issue, that packs quite a punch, while revealing just how scary Dracula is, it never loses its sense of humor. The script by Scott Peterson, thrives with fast paced knock arounds between Ash and Dracula the bigger threat. The art by Horacio Domingues, is vivid and elegant, and almost seems out of place at times in this world, but is definitely a work of art. Overall, a great read with excellent sequential art, that will satisfy any Evil Dead fan.
