Review: Shanghai Red

Shanghai Red

Quentin Tarantino is one of those voices in cinema that knows how to cull from nostalgia while creating something completely refreshing. His movies are a window’s view into our childhoods while remembering to entertain his audience. He’s the main reason Natural Born Killers is so well told as he was the screenwriter behind the movie. Within his own movies his characters are a myriad of different personalities from reclusive killers to madmen.

My two favorite movies of his are Kill Bill and Django Unchained. The protagonists in both movies were both severely abused and they carried out revenge in the bloodiest of ways. There’s nothing like a good revenge story. In the immaculately told Shanghai Red, we meet one such protagonist who’s out to deliver vengeance on those who did her wrong.

We meet Red, as she wakes up on a boat, only to find out she had been sold for a few dollars. We find her three year later, fueled by bloodlust, out to kill those men who sold her into slavery, back home in Portland, where she finds those responsible. She soon reunites with her sister, only to find out that there are bigger wheels turning, and how powerful this person is.

Overall, the comic is an excellent revenge story with a setting that shows this story can work no matter the setting. The story by Christopher Sebela is grimy, action packed, and well told. The art by Joshua Hixon and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou is inspiring as the linework is awe inducing. Altogether, an excellent trade paperback which gives action fans more than their fill and adds a new hero to the pantheon of strong female protagonists.

Shanghai Red’s Tale of Violent Revenge Gets a Trade this January

Eisner-nominated writer Christopher Sebela, Joshua Hixson, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou will release a trade paperback collection of Shanghai Red, their cutthroat historical fiction miniseries, this January from Image Comics.

Red is one of hundreds of people who were shanghaied out of Portland in the late 1800s. Drugged, kidnapped, and sold to a ship’s captain for $50, she woke up trapped on a boat headed out to sea—for years. Now, she’s coming home to find her family and track down the men responsible for stealing her life out from under her.

This blood-soaked tale of revenge, family, and identity stretches from the deck of a ship outside Shanghai all the way to the bleak streets of—and secret tunnels beneath—Portland, Oregon.

Shanghai Red (Diamond code: NOV180085, ISBN: 978-1-5343-1034-6) hits comic book stores on Wednesday, January 30th and bookstores on Tuesday, February 5th.

Review: Shanghai Red #2

After being abducted and spending three hard years trapped at sea, Red has finally returned to the city of Portland. As she tracks down what’s left of her family and her old life, Red begins a bloody campaign of vengeance against the runners and crimps who put her on that boat. One body at a time.

Vengeance stories are common. One that stars a woman and set during the late 1800s… well, that’s rare. Shanghai Red started off with a hell of a gut punch of a tale and the second issue doesn’t disappoint at all.

Writer Christopher Sebela delivers a character in Red that feels up there as far as this type of story. Red is brutal in her abilities and destruction, meticulous and planning in her plan, and cold in her delivery. Sebela has created a vengeance story that’s both heartbreaking and cold and calculated. Red is a character we can feel sorry for and utterly scared of. The brutal deaths emphasize that and creates a comic that’s visceral and bloody.

The art by Joshua Hixson, with lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, enhances the story by adding in a dirty and cold visual that emphasizes the brutality of it all. Fights, burning bodies, the damage is just enough to make you wince and imagine the anger and rage that led to it all. The low-fi nature of it all helps by forcing the fights to be up close and personal.

The second issue continues the story of vengeance and ups the brutal nature of it all. This is a story that’s both expected and unexpected at the same time as Red works her way up the chain to find the person(s) who wronged her while searching for her family. By giving us an anti-hero that’s rare in a setting that feels even rarer in comics we have a series that takes a story we’ve seen before and deliver something fresh and new.

Bone Parish #1 (BOOM! Studios) – There’s a new drug that involves grinding up corpses. There’s some mob aspects and a hell of a twist towards the end.

Britannia: Lost Eagles of Rome #1 (Valiant Entertainment) – The first volume was fantastic and we’re expecting no less from this brand new volume.

Doomsday Clock #6 (DC Comics) – An issue devoted to adding depth to the series’ two new villains and what happens when they meet the villains of the DC Universe.

Harbinger Wars 2 #3 (Valiant Entertainment) – Valiant can do events and this is no exception.

Mr. and Mrs. X #1 (Marvel) – Rogue and Gambit are married… lets see where that goes.

The New World #1 (Image Comics) – Ales Kot’s new series about the United States after the Second Civil War. This should be a good one!

Shanghai Red #2 (Image Comics) – The series is fantastic so far following a young woman’s revenge against the men who kidnapped her and threw her on a boat. It’s a brutal revenge tale.

Teen Titans #20 (DC Comics) – Damian is leading a new team of heroes with some interesting members and a hell of a dynamic.

Transformers: Unicron #2 (IDW Publishing) – The major event continues as Starscream attempts to step up and lead his Decepticons against Unicron!

X-Men Grand Design: Second Genesis #1 (Marvel) – Ed Piskor continues his take on the X-Men with this remixed history. Absolutely fantastic.

Review: Shanghai Red #1

Red is one of hundreds shanghaied out of Portland in the late 1800s. Drugged, kidnapped, and sold to a ship’s captain, she wakes up on a boat headed out to sea for years, unable to escape or even reveal who she truly is. Now she’s coming back in a boat covered in blood to find her family and track down the men responsible for stealing her life out from under her.

A revenge tale. That’s Shanghai Red in a nutshell. The creative team of Christopher Sebela, Joshua Hixson, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou have put together a fascinating first issue that sets a tone of brutality and twists and turns that are fantastic. The story itself is a standard revenge one as the main character, Red, rises up to freedom and sets on a path to get some brutal justice from those that did her wrong. But, this is in the late 1800s. The guns are basic and the transportation is on the high seas. The setting and low-tech vibe of it all creates a gritty setting that just makes it all meaner and all the much cooler.

We’ve seen this type of story. But, this creative team has given us something new. First, there’s Red’s story taking us through the life of the time and what she had to do to survive. Everything is raw and dirty and none of it smooth and easy. There’s something really engaging about that and it gets the reader into the story and where it goes. Then there’s the reveal of who Red is early on. It’s unexpected (at least by me who didn’t read the solicit) and adds to the kick-ass nature of it all, especially when Red tells her story of the why of it all. And Red is a great character. No shits taken and justice is delivered. And she is just. After rising up, she treats her crew well eventually winning them over. She may be a murderer but she’s also a leader in so many ways. The case is made as to why she should be followed and that’s not just the brutality and skill but also an honesty and fairness too.

The art matches the setting with a gritty nature look. Things are clean and clear instead the style almost has a grime that matches the high seas it’s initially set on. We can feel the dirt in a way and the designs are fantastic despite a limited initial stage. That limitation also adds to the latter of the issue when we get a better look at the crew’s destination of Portland, Oregon and we can appreciate how much bigger the adventure’s going to get.

Shanghai Red is a revenge tale, but it’s one that feels unique due to its setting and characters. There’s a grittiness about it all and a low-fi aspect that makes it stand out from the pack. This is an absolutely fantastic debut issue and one that has me sucked in to see where it all goes.

“As a domestic violence survivor, this is a story I’ve been working on for years. It’s been extremely cathartic and therapeutic. It was important for me to have an artist who understood what JOOK JOINT meant to me, before inviting them to embark on this journey with me,” said Franklin. “I appreciate that Image Comics has allowed me to tackle this subject matter, in addition to working with us on charity variants for Mariska Hargitay’s Healing Heart foundation. I now have an opportunity to use my talents to help survivors like myself. People have helped me when I was going through a rough time in my life and now I want to give back.”

No other frills or distractions. Seeing this book come to print is a moment I have looked forward to for a long, long time.”

Greenwood added: “Fast, gritty and full of action—I’d been looking for a book to really cut loose on and this project came along at the perfect time. I haven’t drawn this much dirt or blood in a long time and loving every minute of it.”
