San Diego Comic Art Gallery Presents The Comic Book Art of Star Wars

The San Diego Comic Art Gallery (SDCAG) has announces the Comic Book Art of Star Wars exhibition, which will run from November 21st through January 31st, 2016.  The exhibit will feature 30 pieces of rare Star Wars original art from the very first comic book series that was released by Marvel Comics in 1977.

The majority of these originals are from the first six issues, which adapted the blockbuster George Lucas film. Included in this landmark display are many key and historically significant pages.

Most art featured in this stunning exhibition are by renowned comic artist Howard Chaykin, who will be on hand at the SDCAG on Saturday, November 21st from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, signing copies of the Star Wars Artifact Edition. This Artifact Edition is a 12″ x 17” oversized hardcover art book and features an incredible selection of Star Wars pages. Additionally, the book will include many other pieces of Star Wars art not in the exhibition

Each page of the Star Wars Artifact Edition is scanned from the actual original art and printed same size as the physical art boards. While appearing to be in black and white, an Artifact Edition features art scanned in color so all the subtle nuances of original art are clearly visible to the reader, including white out, blue pencil editorial notations, paste-over corrections and more.

The Star Wars Artifact Edition is the ultimate holiday gift for Jedi’s of all ages, and will be available at the SDCAG from November 21st, and in finer comic book shops on 12/9.

CTM Media Holdings to Become IDW Media Holdings

IDW Media HoldingsCTM Media Holdings, Inc., a holding company consisting of CTM Media Group and a majority interest in IDW, announced today that it will begin operating under the name IDW Media Holdings to reflect the growth of IDW as its principal line of business, and Ted Adams, a founding partner and current CEO and Publisher of IDW, will take over as CEO of IDW Media Holdings.

A holding company is a company that doesn’t actually produce and goods or services, it just owns shares of other companies and forms a corporate group. It helps owners control a number of different companies and reduces the risk for owners.

IDW Media Holdings, Inc. will be an integrated media company consisting of IDW Publishing, the award-winning, San Diego-based comic-book and graphic novel publisher; CTM Media Group, a distributor of print and digital advertising; IDW Entertainment, the television-development arm of IDW Publishing; San Diego Comic Art Gallery, a new comic art gallery space launching in summer 2015; Ettractions, a travel-based web portal; Top Shelf Productions, a publisher of independent and creator-driven graphic novels; IDW Games, producer of tabletop board games and card games; and IDW Limited, the high-end print collectibles division of IDW Publishing.

IDW Relocates and Opens and Art Gallery

IDW 2You have to like it when a comic company is doing well, and it seems like business is booming for IDW Publishing. Today the publisher announced the relocation of their headquarters due to “business expansion,” in June 2015, as well as the opening of a groundbreaking new comic art gallery. The new offices and gallery will be located in former Navy barracks within the historic NTC in Liberty Station, which is nestled in the Point Loma community of San Diego.

The San Diego Comic Art Gallery will be a unique, new and dynamic space located within the IDW offices, designed to educate and engage the local San Diego community and the region of Southern California with the sequential comic book and graphic arts. The SDCAG will create a permanent home in San Diego as a showcase for this celebrated art form; already so pervasive in pop culture, thanks to the meteoric success of comic-based films, television and entertainment, and already so associated with the San Diego area, thanks to Comic-Con International. With a retail space, a gallery of original art from comics and animation, and actual working artists on the premises, the SDCAG is an entirely new kind of venture. Harry L. Katz, former Head Curator in the Prints and Photographs Division at the Library of Congress, has been named the curator of SDCAG.

IDW 1Through events, author and artist appearances, art installations and celebrations, the SDCAG will become a destination to worldwide fans of the medium, and cement San Diego’s status as a Capital of the comic arts, while becoming an integral part of the immediate community. The first installation will be an extensive showcase of the work of Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and local San Diego resident.

The move was out of necessity, as the company has grown and just run out of room. Ted Adams, CEO & Publisher of IDW, describes it as the “perfect next step in the evolution” of the company. At the NTC, they join numerous other art galleries and museums already there. They June move date gets them settled in just before this year’s San Diego Comic-Con which takes place in July.

Congrats to IDW!
