Sam Glanzman Has Entered Hospice Care and Needs Our Help

We’ve received word that comic artist Sam Glanzman is having some health issues and needs our help. As relayed to us via Drew Ford:

Legendary Golden Age comic book artist, and WWII veteran, Sam Glanzman has entered the first stages of Hospice care. He had a fall that resulted in a surgery, and his body just isn’t bouncing back. His wife asked me to put together a tribute book for Sam while he is still alive, so that is what I am doing. I am looking for tributes for the book, and I am looking for donations for the GoFundMe campaign we set up to raise the funds we need to print the book, and help out Sam and Sue in their time of need.  Any comic book professionals, or serious fans of Sam Glaznman, who would like to send in a tribute (writing and/or art) should send your tribute to drewfordcomics@gmail.com, with this in the subject line: SAM GLANZMAN TRIBUTE – LAST NAME, FIRST NAME

Here is a link to the GoFundMe campaign: https://www.gofundme.com/samglanzman

Glanzman enterted the comic industry in 1939 during the Golden Age of comics. He worked for Centaur Publications, Harvey Comics, Charlton Comics, DC Comics, Marvel, Topps Comics, even webcomics, and served in World War II in the U.S. Navy. Recently, Red Range which he worked with Joe Lansdale was released by It’s Alive and IDW Publishing.

Sam Glanzman’s Voyage To The Deep Is The Next Collection From It’s Alive!

voyage-to-the-deepWith two successfully funded Kickstarter campaigns under its belt, and a third one on the horizon, It’s Alive!, an exciting new imprint of IDW Publishing, is just days away from another fully funded project in Voyage to the Deep by Sam Glanzman. This third collection from It’s Alive! is a series of comics books that have been out of print for almost 55 years and will now be collected for the first time ever!

Voyage to the Deep follows the adventures of Admiral Jonathan Leigh, as he commands the mighty Proteus (a shape-shifting atomic sub) through the deepest of Earth’s oceans, battling fanged sea creatures, arctic monsters, anti-mater generators, sonic attacks, and even terrorism!

Golden Age comic book master, and WWII veteran, Sam Glanzman has been drawing comics for over 70 years. Through It’s Alive! publisher Drew Ford’s recent efforts, many new collections of Glanzman’s out-of-print work are now back on the shelves for long-time fans to enjoy, and new readers to discover for decades to come.  Mark Waid called Glanzman “…a National treasure in the field of illustration.”, and The A.V. Club praised Glanzman as “…one of the great storytellers of 20th century comics.”

The Voyage to the Deep Kickstarter page has now reached its goal and will be another successful campaign for the young imprint, however it’s not too late to pledge your support and become a backer yourself. As a backer, you will not only be helping Sam Glanzman, but you will also be helping Ford to continue his mission of saving the history of comics, one book at a time!

The Kickstarter is currently within striking distance of its third stretch goal – every paperback copy of Voyage to the Deep turns into an over-sized hardcover when the total reaches $13,000. Head to the Voyage to the Deep Kickstarter page now to become apart of comic book history before the campaign ends on Saturday, December 3, 2016!

IDW’s Newest ‘It’s Alive!’ Imprint Pushes Forward with Reprints and More

Following two successful Kickstarter campaigns, and the release of several limited edition art prints, signed by Sam Glanzman, It’s Alive! has hit the ground running with plenty more on the horizon.

Red Range by Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Glanzman, the debut title to be published under the It’s Alive! imprint, raised almost $20K ($5K more than the Kickstarter goal paving the way for the stretch goal of a hardcover), and is currently in production with the addition of new colors. Estudio Haus’ colors are breathing new life into Glanzman’s Red Range pencils and inks, originally completed nearly two decades ago.

red-range-1 red-range-2

dopeDope by Trina Robbins, which raised over $12K ($2K over the Kickstarter goal, again making the stretch goal of a hardcover possible), concluded its Kickstarter less than a month ago, and will be seeing the light of day in early 2017!

It’s Alive! has also begun to release very limited edition 12 x 17 art prints, signed by Sam Glanzman and embossed with his initials. Having nearly sold out, there will be more prints coming soon from Glanzman and other creators to meet the demand.

Available prints can be found HERE.

Kickstarter Spotlight: Red Range by Joe R. Lansdale & Sam Glanzman

Red RangeSam Glanzman and Joe R. Lansdale need your help to publish their graphic novel, Red Range.

After putting together over two dozen reprint collections at Dover Publications over the last two years (one of which was nominated for an Eisner Award, The Puma Blues by Stephen Murphy & Michael Zulli), Drew Ford has launched his own publishing imprint called It’s Alive!

The first book for the new publishing imprint is Red Range and a Kickstarter campaign has been started to bring it to print.

It was originally published in black and white by Mojo Press in 1999. Sadly, Mojo Press went out of business the same year Red Range was published, and it has been out of print ever since.

This new edition will be published in full color, on 70 lb glossy stock, with a newly designed matte cover, and a historical afterword about Red Range and the working relationship between Lansdale and Glanzman, by acclaimed Swamp Thing artist Stephen R. Bissette.

Combining an unusual mix of racial unrest, odd ball characters and strange happenings, Red Range is a unique take on “The Western”, and absolutely deserves to be back in print.

The campaign runs until June 25.
