Review: Star Trek #55 The Legacy of Spock Part 1 of 4

StarTrek55-coverWhen I was reading through the list of comics coming out this past week and I saw Star Trek #55 I didn’t know that this was 1 of 4 in a series about the legacy of Spock. When I found out that it is, I got giddy. I grew up loving Star Trek, I use to watch re-runs with my father and I absolutely adored the half Vulcan/half Human and Leonard Nimoy was a perfect fit to play him. Sadly, Leonard Nimoy passed away a year ago. I remember at the time of his passing such sadness as if I lost a family member which may sound crazy, but I am a Trekkie and he had a prolonged effect on me. And maybe it was by design or by accident this is a great time for this series to come along in a way to honor Nimoy. Live Long And Prosper Leonard.

This series starts out after the crew the Enterprise led by newly named Captain Kirk defeated the war criminal know as Nero, who had destroyed the peaceful planet of Vulcan by creating a black hole in the middle of the planet by using red matter that was developed by Spock at the Vulcan Science Academy in an alternate timeline. Old Spock see’s young Spock and after a heart to heart Old Spock was going to try and find a suitable planet in which to start a new colony for the Vulcan Race.

In his journeys old Spock comes across his father who warns him that the surviving elders of Vulcan are not too please with him. Meanwhile, the Romulans are back at it again, talking about how they can be completely victorious over the Vulcan race even though there aren’t many of the left (talk about kicking a race, while they are still down). On a Klingon Prison Planet, a couple of men from Nero’s ship who somehow survived their ship being sucked back through a black whole and destroyed are coming up with a plan to try and finished what Nero started and back on Older Spock’s transport vessel Spock receives some terrible news about the fate of him and his Vulcan ancestry.

I thoroughly enjoyed this issue. As a Trekkie I have no problems with the story line and it flowed very nicely. It helps that Roberto Orci, who was a big part of the 2009 reboot of Star Trek oversaw the story line that is involved with this story since it ties in with the movies. Mike Johnson, overall did a great job with continuing Old Spock’s journey after the defeat of Nero

Artistically, this book was very detailed and amazing! Tony Shasteen and Davide Mastrolonardo did a great job in bringing the characters to life on paper. Everyone’s likeness was on point as well as the coloring it all fit and nothing visually looked out of place. I look forward to seeing more of their artwork through the remaining 3 books of the “Legacy of Spock.” If you’re a Trekkie, you are going to enjoy this book. If you are new to the Star Trek Universe, but are familiar with 2009 Star Trek movie reboot then you won’t be lost and you too will enjoy this book. I give it a must buy!
