Pop Political/Political Pop: The Beetle Vs. the Glass Ceiling (Spoilers)

Welcome to the first Pop Political/Political Pop which will be posted each Friday where I spotlight a “political” moment in comics for the week or a geek moment in politics. It could be an entire comic, a Tweet, release, event or a moment in a comic series, recent or in the past. This week’s first one comes courtesy of The Superior Foes of Spider-Man written by Nick Spencer with art from Rich Ellis.

Warning Spoilers Ahead!

The issue focuses on the new Beetle, who we have learned is the daughter of mob enforcer Tombstone. Janice wants to be a super villain but her dad has other ideas, such as her becoming a lawyer… they can steal way more money and do so legally. But, that doesn’t sit right where she protests that she wants to break the glass ceiling and become the head of a crew and run it the right way.

On being a woman and a career (in crime) she has this to say:

beetle_1Then there’s Janice’s dating life. In an awesome sequence of how she spends her time we get a snapshot of a date and what’s going on through her head.

beetle_2Between the Clinton reference and the X when Republicans are mentioned, I’m guessing Janice might be a Democrat.

Review: The Superior Foes of Spider-Man #7

superior foes of spider-man #7 coverThere’s a reason I named this series as my favorite new series that debuted in 2013 and this issue encapsulates many of them. Focused on the origin of the new Beetle, writer Nick Spencer mixes in his usual humor, action and sly commentary. The issue, and series as a whole, can only be described as brilliant. It’s the Beetle vs. the Glass Ceiling!

Who is the new Beetle? Get  her origin here as we are taken through her life as a kid through how she became a villain. The last issue teased us with just a bit of that, and where Spencer takes the story is just awesome. There’s so much here. Commentary on comic characters in general, gender, society, lawyers and all done with great humor.

Much of that humor is helped brought across by artist Rich Ellis. Ellis takes a cue of the artistic success that is Hawkeye and Daredevil, and applies it to this already excellent series. It works great and the small touches added by Ellis pile on in how it’s all presented. This is a great example of an artist and writer clicking perfectly for a fantastic final product.

Overall, this is a great issue and fine example of why this series has the praise it does. It also is a perfect jumping on point for anyone to check out what the hype is about. As part of the first batch of comics for 2014, it’s release points to a very good 2014. Here’s hoping the rest of the year’s comics are half as good, because we’ll be in for a treat.

Chris Roberson’s MEMORIAL Coming in December

Eleven-page preview featured in IDW’s October comics

[Memorial Cover Image]The company that brought you 30 Days of Night and Locke & Key kicks off the holidays with the latest creator-owned series, MEMORIAL. Created and written by New York Times best-selling author and Eisner-nominated creator of iZombie, Chris Roberson, MEMORIAL delivers a magical six-issue story. Providing art for this new series is talented artist Rich Ellis, with covers by the legendary Michael WM Kaluta. An eleven-page preview of this far-reaching series is featured in selected IDW comics this month. A link to the preview can be found here: http://bit.ly/memorialpreview. The preview is also available for free through the IDW Comics app on iTunes, found here: http://bit.ly/idwcomicsapp.

Starting in December, MEMORIAL is the story of Em, a young woman who arrives at a hospital in Portland, Oregon, with no memory of her past. A year later, her newly-rebuilt life is thrown into turmoil after she inherits a magical shop, the kind that appears in an alley one instant and disappears the next. Em is drawn into a supernatural conflict between beings that not only represent, but are, fundamental elements of the universe itself. All of existence is at stake, so there’s only a little pressure on Em, the magical shop, and a talking cat.

Comic veteran Roberson has received two Eisner Award nominations this year for Best Limited Series (Cinderella: From Fabeltown with Love) and Best New Series (iZombie). Readers are encouraged to look for the preview of MEMORIAL #1 in many of IDW’s October comics, including 30 DAYS OF NIGHT #1, COLD WAR #1, DOCTOR WHO #10, H.P. An all-new comic series coming in December

Featured preview in IDW October comics

[Memorial #1 cover]San Diego, CA (September 20, 2011)—Starting in December, IDW Publishing is proud to offer the fantastical new mini-series, MEMORIAL. This impressively creative series is written by New York Times best-selling author and creator of iZombie and Cinderella: Fables are Forever, Chris Roberson with art by the enormously talented artist Rich Ellis and a cover by the fan-favorite Michael Kaluta. An eleven-page preview of this far-reaching new series will be featured in selected IDW comics throughout October.

“Memorial,” Roberson said, “is a kind of cross between Doctor Who and Sandman by way of Miyazaki. A comic about memory and magic, mythology and mystery.”

MEMORIAL tells the story of Em, a young woman who arrives at a hospital in Portland, Oregon with no memory of her past. A year later, her newly-rebuilt life is thrown into turmoil after she inherits a magical shop, the kind that appears in an alley one instant and disappears the next. Em finds herself drawn into a supernatural conflict between immortal beings representing the fundamental aspects of the universe itself.  All of existence is at stake, and the only things standing in the way of total oblivion are Em, the magical shop, and a talking cat.

“I’m incredibly excited about Memorial. Chris and Rich have put together a series I’m very proud to be publishing, and that I know is going to find an audience,” said IDW CEO and Publisher, Ted Adams. “To that end, we’re determined to make sure that as many people as possible see the preview before retailers have to place their pre-orders for #1.”
