Review: Night’s Dominion #4

nightsdom-4-marketing_preview-1Emerane and her companions narrowly escape the Cult of Uhlume and the relentless Furie, exhausted but no richer for their efforts. Going their separate ways into in the pitiless streets of Umber, they each find a dead end waiting. Now penniless, Emerane’s quest to free her younger brother from debtor’s prison seems more hopeless than ever. Until a possible solution comes from the most unlikely ally imaginable—the Furie himself. But his help comes with a dangerous price.

The twists and turns continue in Night’s Dominion #4, as things get complicated for Emerane. It seems she is much more then she appears, in terms of her character. Even more so the Furie has an interesting backstory than first thought. Yet it seems the Cult of Uhlume has a lust for power that they want by any means necessary.

The art by Ted Naifeh (who also writes the series) is much darker this time around. Which I think is partly due to the darkening of the story. The sheer amount of action scenes is impressive and well done in every aspect. Yet this issues does show the contrast between the various classes in the city in superb fashion.

As the demigod Grael emerges from legend to fight Uhlume’s army, Emerane enters their stronghold to find the source of their power. Aided by the Umber Knight and the Magus, she fights through to the tower’s icy heart in search of the necromancer whose magic commands the undead soldiers. But even as the city is overwhelmed, as the Asp falls to arrows, and the Acolyte prays to gods that may have never been there to listen, it’s Emerane herself who faces the most devastating horror. For the bloodthirsty necromancer behind it all may be the one person in the world she can’t bring herself to fight.

Night’s Dominion #6 features an action packed ending for the first story arc of this series. The mysterious old man freed from the debtor’s prison finally gets a name, a name from myth and song, of heroes long since past as our heroes realise who he is. Yet, the identity of the necromancer who is behind all of this is someone who was mentioned before just not seen. Who it is will surprise is you, and you’ll want to go back and check things out.

Like the previous issues, the art is solid by Ted Naifeh (who also is writing the series). Naifeh brings in a lot of contrast between the city of the tower of Uhlume, and the conflict going on in the city. The action scenes have a nice flow and make this a quick read.

When she’s not working as a barmaid, Emerane becomes the Night, the most wanted thief in Umber. But when the Furie, Umber’s self-proclaimed champion, declares himself her enemy, she’s soon penniless and desperate. Her only recourse is to join the Bard and his ragtag team of rogues as they infiltrate the Cult of Uhlume’s tower in search of untold riches. The tower is not as it seems, however, and our heroes—if we dare call them such—may find more than they bargained for in its murky depths.

Early Review: Night’s Dominion #1

NIGHT'S DOMINION #1Night’s Dominion by Ted Naifeh is a magical blending of superheroes and thieves set in the medieval fantasy world known as Umber. The story follows the Bard, the Acolyte, the Asp, the Magus, and the barmaid, Emerane, as they pull off the heist of a lifetime, and ultimately decide if they want to save the city that has let them down a few too many times.

Night’s Dominion #1 is an interesting first issue in that it zigs and zags all over blending various genres for an entertaining read. When it kicks off, the comic feels like a fantasy roleplaying game story with a party coming together to go on some quest. That quest is revealed to be a heist. Yes, this is Ocean’s Eleven in a fantasy setting, but there’s more! There’s also superheroes! A mysterious character who looks like a steampunk-ish take on a modern superhero makes an appearance, adding in another direction for the issue. And it all comes together to form like Voltron creating something exciting and interesting.

With all of those elements together, Night’s Dominion still reminded me a lot of a standard fantasy adventure, and that’s not a bad thing at all. A lot of that is due to Naifeh’s art which is very focused on that fantasy setting. There’s not much that really takes you out of that, other than a certain superhero-ish character that shows up. The characters themselves are pretty standard fantasy classes. There’s the bard, the cleric, the alchemist, the thief, and the assassin. It’s your basic D&D party. The look of them all is what I’d expect for that sort of characters and the setting is a blend of high fantasy with a little Assassin’s Creed. Again, like the genre, the look of the comic works really well and blends together to create something interesting.

If you like D&D adventures, or Assassin’s Creed, or the idea of superheroes in a fantasy setting, Night’s Dominion is one to check out. Ted Naifeh is great when it comes to entertaining comics that really build a world, and this looks like it’ll be no exception to that.
