ComicsPRO 2025: Ghost Machine announces First Ghost and Hyde Street: Sisterhood

Image Comics and Ghost Machine sent chills through audience members at last week’s ComicsPro event with the announcement of a duo of new thrillers for 2025—First Ghost by New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer, Geoff Johns, and Gene Ha launching later this year and Hyde Street: Sisterhood by Maytal Zchut and Leila Leiz launching in July.

Ghost Machine’s Unnamed Universe story settings span decades—from the future of Geiger, to the past of Redcoat—and now its present-day set series will begin with First Ghost. This new series launches later this year and will be co-written by Meltzer—who, after a short story in Marvel #1000, returns to comics for the first time in six years—and Johns with world-renowned artist Gene Ha (Top 10, Wonder Woman: Historia). First Ghost will follow on a newly elected United States President who moves into the White House with a young son. The two quickly discover the residence is more terrifying than cutthroat politicians and red tape.

But that’s not all the excitement out of Ghost Machine—fans will also soon be introduced to a new character in April, Sister Hood, in the upcoming Hyde Street #5, before she takes up residency on Hyde Street with the creepy new release, Sisterhood: A Hyde Street Story.

The new five-issue series reunites Ghost Machine writer Maytal Zchut and artist Leila Leiz, who has signed an exclusive agreement with Ghost Machine as a full-time artist. The It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour collaborators will explore themes of extreme co-dependence and revenge in a tale revolving around two life-long friends whose relationship radically changes when one accidentally drowns during a sorority hazing incident… But on Hyde Street, death takes on a terrifying new meaning.

Image and Ghost Machine’s It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour sells out and gets a new printing

The sinister one-shot tale on shelves just in time for Halloween—It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour Maytal Zchut’s scary-good debut writing effort for Ghost Machine, illustrated by French artist Leila Leiz with colors by Alex Sinclair, and lettered by Rob Leigh—has sold out completely at the distributor level, day-of-release. In order to keep up with escalating reorder activity for the Ghost Machine title, Image has fast-tracked the issue for reprint and urges fans to head to their local comic shop today to grab a copy before they’re gone from shelves.

It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour is perfect for fans of the recent horror movie The Substance and readers already familiar with the eerie residents of Hyde Street by Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, Brad Anderson, and Leigh, which debuted earlier this month.

In Devour, readers meet Lily who needs to lose weight to fit into her wedding dress but struggles to shed some pounds. And what’s worse, her super-thin grandmother relentlessly disparages Lily’s approach, instead lavishing praise upon a quick-fix miracle supplement called Devour, as hawked by the mysterious health guru, Miss Goodbody. But is taking it worth the cost? In this extra-length one-shot nightmare, when it comes to Devour…all you need is one.

It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour, second printing (Lunar Code 1024IM874) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, November 27. Hyde Street #1, second printing (Lunar Code 0924IM849) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, November 6.

Image and Ghost Machine reveals covers for Hyde Street and It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour

Ghost Machine has revealed a first look of the covers for its highly anticipated horror universe Hyde Street at its panel during FanExpo Denver over the weekend. The ongoing, monthly Hyde Street series begins with issue #1 on October 2 and the one-shot It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour which will hit shelves just in time for Halloween.

A new epic era in character-centered horror begins as Ghost Machine launches Hyde Street, its newest ongoing series from creators Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis, whose long-running collaboration prior to Ghost Machine produced iconic titles Blackest Night: Green Lantern, and Aquaman. The series will also be colored by Brad Anderson, inked by Danny Miki, and lettered by Rob Leigh

In every city and town, off every country road and metropolis avenue, if you make a wrong turn in your soul… you might find yourself on Hyde Street. But be careful who you talk to and what you do because the consequences make death itself seem like the easy way out. Introducing Mr. X-Ray, Pranky the World’s Most Dangerous Scout, Miss Goodbody, and many more… Out to delight, fright and say good night. What is their secret and that of Hyde Street? Only they know. For now.

Cover A from Reis showcases the mysterious Mr. X-Ray, with fellow Ghost Machine creator Gary Frank showing off Mr. X-Ray’s wilder side with Cover B. Cover D features Mike Deodato Jr.’s first variant art for Ghost Machine of a terrifyingly mischievous Pranky. Deodato Jr. is best known for his distinct art on DC and Marvel titles alike, including Wonder Woman, Dark Avengers, Infinity Wars, The Incredible Hulk, and The Amazing Spider-Man. Two additional variant covers will be available, from Inkpot Award-winning Batman artist Kelley Jones, and Reis, respectively.

While the monthly series centers on the threats walking Hyde Street, It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour provides a taste of what happens to its casualties. With an impending wedding, Lily needs to lose weight in order to fit into her wedding dress, and struggles to shed some pounds. And what’s worse, her super-thin grandmother relentlessly disparages Lily’s approach, instead lavishing praise upon a quick-fix miracle supplement called Devour, as hawked by the mysterious health guru Miss Goodbody. Her motto? Get thin… or die trying! In this weight-loss nightmare, when it comes to Devour…all you need is one. It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour marks Maytal Zchut’s gripping comic book writing debut, illustrated by French-born artist Leila Leiz, colored by Alex Sinclair, and lettered by Rob Leigh. Reis displays Miss Goodbody’s scary-good sales skills with Cover A, with Leiz presenting what it means quite literally to devour with Cover B, and Frank showing what frights lurk in the shadows on the scale with Cover C.

Hyde Street #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 2:

  • Cover A by Ivan Reis
  • Cover B by Gary Frank
  • Cover C by Kelley Jones
  • Cover D by Mike Deodato
  • Cover E by Ivan Reis

It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 30.

Peter Snejbjerg joins Ghost Machine

Danish comic book artist Peter Snejbjerg is the latest artist to join Jason Fabok, Gary Frank, Bryan Hitch, Geoff Johns, Lamont Magee, Francis Manapul, Brad Meltzer, Ivan Reis, Peter J. Tomasi, and Maytal Zchut at Ghost Machine, the recently launched, media company and the line of comics, published by Image Comics, co-owned and co-operated by all of its creators. The addition of Snejbjerg comes on the heels of last week’s major announcement that Brazilian superstar artist Ivan Reis had also joined the collective.

In his long and varied career, Snejbjerg has established himself as a prolific artist for DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint working with bestselling writers such as Neil Gaiman and Garth Ennis, before moving on to DC Universe titles like Starman and JSA, and horror titles including the Hellboy-spinoff, BPRD for Dark Horse. He also illustrated a number of children’s books showcasing his trademark blend of dark humor and horror.

At Ghost Machine, Snejbjerg will reteam with Peter J. Tomasi—the duo had previously created DC Comics’ supernatural war story The Light Brigade—on Hornsby & Halo, part of Ghost Machine’s Family Odyssey universe. In Hornsby & Halo, nothing less than peace between Heaven and Hell is at stake, as demon daughter Rose Hornsby and angel son Zach Halo are at the center of a cosmic family swap. It’s Nature versus Nurture, as the age-old battle of Good and Evil is as simple as who speaks louder: the angel on Rose’s shoulder, or the demon trying to crack Zach’s halo. Teenage hormones have never been more epic.

In Ghost Machine, creators co-own all the characters and universes developed for Ghost Machine, sharing in all publishing, media, merchandise, and beyond—a move the creatives of Ghost Machine see as a natural evolution within the entertainment landscape, allowing them to retain creative control and meaningfully participate in the success of their properties like never before.

NYCC 2023: Ghost Machine launches a cooperative media company

Ghost Machine officially launched at New York Comic Con 2023. It dubs itself as a first-of-its-kind creator-owned and operated media company. Creators co-own all the characters and universes developed for Ghost Machine, sharing in all publishing, media, merchandise, and beyond. The pioneering creator collective consists of Jason Fabok, Gary Frank, Bryan Hitch, Geoff Johns, Lamont Magee, Francis Manapul, Brad Meltzer, Peter J. Tomasi, and Maytal Zchut. The company plans to announce additional talent in the months ahead, including one major superstar creator. All creators will be exclusive to Ghost Machine for their comics work after completing their already committed to projects.

From the announcement:

As the recent Hollywood strikes have shown, creatives are disenfranchised with the traditional industry model—creators seek increased empowerment as a natural progression to an ever-changing entertainment landscape. Ghost Machine’s enterprising business model is at the forefront of this evolution with the characters and full company ownership shared by its creators in every way.

Ghost Machine’s titles will be published through the original champion of creator-owned comics – Image Comics – which launched in 1992 when seven of the top comic book creators left Marvel Comics to own their own work and ideas.

A two-issue prequel series, Geiger: Ground Zero by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, ships in November and December before Ghost Machine’s first official release in January 2024 with Ghost Machine #1, a 64-page special which will introduce its FOUR SHARED UNIVERSES of characters: 1) The Unnamed; revealing a mysterious group of genre heroes from across history, featuring characters and titles like Geiger, Junkyard Joe, Redcoat, and First Ghost. A Geiger series, based on Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s hit comic of the same name, is already in development at Paramount TV with director Justin Simien. 2) Rook: Exodus; a sprawling sci-fi epic which takes place in the far future, on a world where every aspect of nature is controlled by humanity. 3) The universe of Family Odysseys centering around the time displaced family, The Rocketfellers, and their friends. And 4) An epic Horror Universe co-created and illustrated by one of our secret superstar artists to be announced, currently under contract. Following Ghost Machine #1, Ghost Machine’s titles will begin shipping in April 2024 with an all-new ongoing Geiger series, Redcoat and Rook: Exodus.
