X-Men #35 is a bit of a mixed bag as one era ends and a new one begins

X-Men #35

All good things must come to an end, and as good of a thing as the Krakoan era has been for mutantkind…its time has come at last. The tragedy and triumph of Fall of the House of X, the madness and mystery of Rise of the Powers of X…they have all come to their end and led to this moment that will change the future of mutantkind for years to come. X-Men #35 officially closes the Krakoan era and teases what’s to come.

Just because a series ends, doesn’t mean the story is officially over. X-Men #35 celebrates 700 issues on Uncanny X-Men as it also wraps up the Krakoan era of the X-Men’s story. And, it does so with a choppy over-sized issue that has its ups and downs. From the beginning, I wasn’t a fan of the new take on the X-Men as I felt it took them too far from their roots fighting for their rights. It made them nationalists and statements in the first few issues were at times cringe showing a belief of superiority. It took Professor X and Magneto’s visions and mashed them together for a chimera of a monster. While there were some good ideas and moments, overall, it took the X-Men in too far of an extreme direction. It was Utopia on steroids. All of that came crashing down and from the teases within X-Men #35 and the Free Comic Book Day issue, it looks like the X-Men are getting back to a more traditional take.

X-Men #35 wraps things up and moves things along as it gives us one final look at Krakoa and a battle with Apocalypse who isn’t taking what has happened too well. It’s a choppy story that feels like it’s an unnecessary fight, giving the X-Men one final battle of the old era. That choppy storytelling isn’t helped by the rotating artists who at times only take a page and foster a disjointed look along with a disjointed narrative. It feels like it’s almost too many cooks in the kitchen and the team didn’t know how to end things beyond… fight.

Chris Claremont gives us some family bonding time as Nightcrawler, Rogue, Mystique, and Destiny have a picnic and hash things out. While it’s nice to see this storyline continue, and not just dropped now lineage has been established, the dialogue is eye rolling at times where it feels like some things just repeat over and over. I had to pause and go back and reread pages to make sure that there wasn’t a mistake that’s how repetative the back and forth is.

The comic wraps up with a focus on Professor X who is now in custody but has his freedom too in a way. The comic as a whole teases his redemption but also what’s to come is the natural extension of his ideas. His children going off on their own. It teases the villainy of the character, the manipulative nature, but also that there’s reasons for his actions and he’s here to do good, though through at times evil means.

X-Men #35 will likely make fans of the era both happy and sad. There are some cheery moments and it reveals that Krakoa lives on and we might again see the island’s return in the future. It closes one door, leaves more opens, and begins whole new paths to take.

Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer takes flight again in a new one-shot

Dave Stevens’ two-fisted triumph soars again at IDW Publishing with the May release of The Rocketeer one-shot, an anthology of three tales by an astonishing assemblage of comic-industry heavyweights!

The development of this new Rocketeer comic project began during the making of the documentary Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection, when filmmaker Kelvin Mao discovered that Danny Bilson and the late Paul De Meo, the original screenwriters of the 1991 The Rocketeer film, had written an unpublished Rocketeer comic book story guest starring aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart some years earlier. Mao, along with the film’s executive producer Robert Windom, approached superstar Adam Hughes to illustrate the tale, and the project evolved into a celebratory one-shot anthology edited by Scott Dunbier.

The Rocketeer one-shot includes an eight-page story by Bilson, De Meo, and Hughes; a 12-page story of Cliff Secord’s date night with Betty leading to trouble with a vaguely familiar adventurer/archeologist, written by Mao, drawn by Craig Cermak, and colored by award-winning Laura Martin; a four-page story of the Rocketeer fighting a Japanese Zero in the South Pacific, written by Robert Windom, drawn by the fan favorite Jae Lee, and colored by June Chung; pinups by Phil Noto and Maria Laura Sanapo; and more!

The Rocketeer one-shotwill be available in comic book stores in May with several variant covers for fans and retailers to enjoy, including Cover A by Adam Hughes, Cover B by Locke & Key artist extraordinaire Gabriel Rodríguez, and two special retailer incentive “Full Art” variants of the Hughes and Rodríguez art respectively.

Colleen Doran, Greg Hildebrandt and Joe Jusko Join Comics for Ukraine

Last week, more than three dozen comic-book writers, artists, colorists, letterers, designers, and editors announced a collection of all-new comic-book stories to raise money to aid refugees in Ukraine. Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds, the benefit anthology edited by Scott Dunbier, with all proceeds going to Operation USA, surpassed an initial $35,000 funding goal just twelve hours after the campaign launched, with over $113,000 from over 900 contributors raised to date. The book will be full-color, 96 pages, 8 x 12 inches, and available in both hardcover and softcover editions, with hundreds of supporters on day one. As the campaign enters a second week of funding, it is announced that Eisner Award-winner Colleen Doran, legendary illustrator Greg Hildebrandt, and celebrated cover artist Joe Jusko have joined the project.

These three creators join the incredible roster of comics talent assembled for Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds; united under the mission of providing relief to a war-torn Ukraine, which has suffered attacks from neighboring Russia since late February. There will be multiple versions available: a hardcover with a painted cover by Alex Ross, and softcover versions by Arthur Adams, Dave Johnson, and Bill Sienkiewicz. At press time, stories will be created by a virtual who’s who of writers and artists, including Brent Anderson, Sergio Aragones, June Brigman, Kurt Busiek, Howard Chaykin, Joshua Dysart, Mark Evanier, Emil Ferris, Dave Gibbons, Rob Guillory, John Layman, Gabriel Rodriguez, Stan Sakai, Louise Simonson, Walter Simonson, Chris Sprouse, Jill Thompson, Matt Wagner, Mark Waid, and more.

Apart from hard costs (printing, credit-card fees, marketing, etc.) all of the funds raised by Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds will benefit the relief efforts in Ukraine in partnership with Operation USA, so while the initial funding goal has been met, continued support will maximize the impact on the lives of those deeply affected by the ongoing war—improving conditions for Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries via the provision of emergency grants and in-kind material aid.

Operation USA supports health and education programs to help children and families at home and abroad recover and thrive in the wake of disasters, disease, violence and endemic poverty.  Every day, they strive to meet the needs of under-served and overlooked populations so that future generations may have the tools they need to create meaningful change in their own communities and lives. Working with partners around the world, they empower communities to recover, build resiliency and thrive in the face of pervasive obstacles during a time of unprecedented global need. Since 1979, OpUSA has delivered $450 million in aid to 101 countries.

Batman/Catwoman Special Brings Romance in January and Honors John Paul Leon

The Batman/Catwoman series has been showing us the romance between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle as it has changed over their lives, but what about their connections from BEFORE they became costumed adventurers? The upcoming Batman/Catwoman Special (on shelves Tuesday January 25) traces the life of Selina Kyle from its earliest days to her entry into the criminal underworld and reveals that Bruce was a presence in her life all along. Whether fate or coincidence, it’s even more of a reason why the Bat/Cat romance is one of the most enduring love affairs in all of comics.

Now expanded to celebrate the legacy of iconic artist John Paul Leon, whose untimely passing after a long battle with cancer shocked the comics world this past May, this special will feature the work Leon completed for the original story plus tributes to the renowned artist created in his name by some of his closest friends and admirers. Bernard Chang, Shawn Crystal, Mitch Gerads, and Dave Stewart will bring the original story to its conclusion, lettered by Clayton Cowles, while comics’ top artists gather to celebrate Leon’s creative legacy through pin-up pages and essays in the special, including Lee Bermejo, Denys Cowan, Joëlle Jones, Dave Gibbons, Walter Simonson, and more.

Batman/Catwoman Special #1 will publish on January 25, 2022 with a cover by John Paul Leon and variant covers by Lee Weeks and Bill Sienkiewicz.
