Review of Lady Zorro: Blood and Lace

LadyZorroTPCOVERLady Zorro is called back to Alta California to recover a sacred Chumash war axe, stolen by mercenary soldiers. Only she can stop an all-out bloody war across the ranchos, and more deaths like those that consumed her family… if she can stay on mission! When an opportunity for ultimate vengeance presents itself, can she ignore it? Or will the fiery desire to put her greatest foe six feet underground consume Lady Zorro… and all of Alta California with it? A violent, sexy tale of intrigue and swashbuckling as the female Fox must use all her assets to get herself out of trouble.

Warning: Contained within are scenes of swashbuckling, violence, and slight nudity. Now that the slight warning is posted I can continue the review.

While the pace and action of the story is relatively consist throughout. For the most part, the few slower scenes introduce backstory to the various characters. That gives some degree of grounding to the story, without slowing it down. The story itself has a slight historical vibe to it, while blending it with a large dash of fiction.

The art style is consistent throughout, allowing the reader to be fully immersed. While there are some degree of clothing accuracy, it is questionable how much. However the artist manages to add his own little touch that can be seen here and there if look closely. The action scenes are superb, and filled with a solid amount of color and violence. Even the color scheme is consistent throughout, in color and shades with a nice touch.

It’s war. In the smoking ruins of what was a thriving Spanish village only a few days before, the Spanish patriots and Chumash warriors prepare to fight a well-trained, well-equipped army of German mercenaries. As the battle begins, Lady Zorro and Hugo gallop off on a last-ditch effort to avert the full-on massacre of the defenders. But the evil German general sees through Lady Zorro’s plan, and has a bullet for all her troubles. This is the end for Alta California as we know it… and Lady Zorro.

Lady Zorro thinks she finds a moment of rest in a Chumash village, but mercenary soldiers are everywhere… and the stormclouds of war are gathering more rapidly than she can imagine. What started out as a simple caper to steal back an artifact has become a suicide mission, where at stake is the survival of the Spanish and native ways of life in Alta California. As Lady Zorro is increasingly backed into a corner, she realizes the only escape is direct confrontation. And worse, at this time when she needs to be at her most dispassionate, her most rational, along comes a handsome soldier…

As Lady Zorro battles with her urge to exact vengeance on the General, Hugo is ridden down by the mercenary troops, brought back to the mansion, and tortured. The General uses Hugo’s theft of an axe as an excuse to exert martial law on Alta California, wresting command from (and arresting) Capitain Ramón. Can Lady Zorro rescue Hugo, the axe, and the Capitain from a mansion teeming with ruthless mercenary soldiers? The odds are almost impossible… and Lady Zorro will find herself using a rallying cry that she never thought would pass her lips.
