John Cassaday was to be a guest at this year’s Baltimore Comic Con but unfortunately shockingly passed away this week. Baltimore Comic Con is honoring the beloved artist with a special panel featuring those that knew him.
The panel takes place Sunday from 1:00pm to 1:45pm in room 337.
John Cassaday Remembered
The comics community recently lost John Cassaday, award-winning artist of comics including Planetary, Captain America, Astonishing X-Men, and Star Wars. Some of John’s closest friends and associates gather to celebrate the life of this singular talent, including Mark Waid (The Flash, Kingdom Come), award-winning editor Scott Dunbier, and more, with host Bob Harrison.
In a complete shock, it has been announced that John Cassadayhas passed away. He was just 52. Cassaday’s sister shared the heartbreaking news earlier today. He was admitted to the ICU in New York four days ago and the cause of his death is unknown.
Cassaday was a beloved artist working for numerous publishers and making his mark on comics with series such as Planetary, Astonishing X-Men, Captain America, Star Wars, and more.
Self-taught, Cassaday was first published by Boneyard Press and Caliber Comics. It was a meeting with Mark Waid in 1996 where his career really took off. Waid shared his memories on the loss:
My dear friend John Cassaday passed today at the absurdly young age of 53 and I miss him already.
I met John in, I believe, 1996–Google will not give up the secret of exactly which year the Big Apple Comic Con was held at Madison Square Garden. John was pleasant, he was polite and well-mannered, and when he showed me his portfolio, I also knew he was tremendously talented for a newcomer. The next morning, I was having breakfast with writer Jeff Mariotte, who mentioned he was looking for an illustrator for his next series, Desperados. Boy, did he say that to the right guy, because I had just the artist in mind.
Outside of that fortuitous referral, I refuse to take any real credit for “discovering” John Cassaday. I can’t take credit for having functioning eyeballs. But we were friends forevermore after that, and watching his quick ascension to becoming one of the most gifted, most sought-after comics illustrators of his generation was a blast. John had a memorable stint on X-Men and another on his favorite character, Captain America, but it was Planetary that rightfully put him on the map. He was meticulous, he wouldn’t turn in a single piece of art until he’d worried it to death, and as his publisher for a brief time at Humanoids, I had the great and now melancholy pleasure of watching magnificent pages, his best ever, come in slowly on his dream project, an unannounced creator-owned multimedia series that will now be his unfinished symphony.
Men in comics, as a general rule, are not exactly blessed with leading-man looks, but John was. Ask anyone. Between his handsome appearance, his charming manner, and his perfect blend of confidence and humility, he was quite the favorite of many, many ladies in his youth. Many. Effortlessly. To walk into a room of women with John was a reminder that the rest of us really, truly needed to work on our game. My single favorite memory with John was when he and I and a bunch of other comics dudes were standing around a big convention bar-party when actor Michael Rosenbaum walked in. Every woman’s head turned, instantly, every eye upon Rosenbaum. It was like throwing a magnet into a box of iron filings. Conversely, every man in the bar who’d been there with a date was suddenly holding two drinks. In the tumult, I had the presence of mind to look at John and say, “Now you know how WE feel.”
John Cassaday, I will say without hesitation and with very little fear of disagreement, was one of the very best illustrators and storytellers to ever work in the comics medium. Like Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, or Michael Golden, he is a touchstone, a reference point to the dozens and dozens of artists whose work was influenced by his. Most people are lucky if more than a dozen people are still talking about them a month after they pass. My friend John will be talked about and remembered by an entire industry for ages. And rightfully so. Rest in peace, sir.
We’re absolutely shocked at the loss and a hell of a talent at such a young age. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans.
Celebrate Baltimore Comic-Con‘s 25th Anniversary on September 20-22, 2024 at the Inner Harbor’s Baltimore Convention Center. Baltimore Comic-Con has announced the addition of comics guests John Beatty, John Cassaday, Trish Forstner, Al Milgrom, Liam Sharp, and Billy Tucci for our 25th Anniversary event! Tickets are now available online.
John Beatty got his first break working for Marvel and DC Comics when he was 19. The year was 1980 and the decade that followed is now referred to as the “Bronze Age” of comic books! Beginning with short filler stories for DC Comics anthology books, Beatty soon found himself as the finisher on the JLA working over George Perez. However, the run was limited to 4 issues due to Marvel Comics offering him the inking duty over his favorite character, Captain America, with his long-time mentor and collaborator, Mike Zeck. Coming off of a 2.5 year run on Cap, Zeck and Beatty were tagged to do the art on the first major clash of heroes and villains, Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars! which saw the change of Spider-Man’s costume to black in issue #8 of the series, something that turned into a bigger deal as Venom. After Secret Wars, the team of Zeck and Beatty produced the hit limited mini-series and a graphic novel starring Marvel’s newest “A-List” character, The Punisher. The last major work the team produced was the Captain America Annual 8. Covers for Captain America, G.I. Joe, and many other titles were a staple of work for the team during the ’80s. Beatty continued projects for Marvel, including Thanos Quest, Squadron Supreme, Venom: The Madness, and others. At DC Comics, John was the inker for Batman: Year 3 and the first 5 issues on the new Batman title, Legends of the Dark Knight. Eight years of work on various Batman titles with writer Doug Moench and penciler Kelley Jones became well-known in the ’90s, including the last 2 installments on the Vampire/Batman GN series, other Batman graphic novels, and a 3-year run on the monthly Batman title, recently reprinted in two beautiful hardcover editions. Eventually turning his sights on DC Licensing, Beatty has produced vector ink and color for style guides, from movies to animated series to products such as toys, cards, packaging, and clothing, among other things. This is uncredited work, but is still being used. Traditional inking is still Beatty’s main love, and he continues to practice it and teach those around him who want to learn.
John Cassaday is the Eisner Award-winning artist best known for co-creating the acclaimed DC/Wildstorm series Planetary, Marvel’s best-selling Astonishing X-Men, and the launch of the Star Wars on-going series from Marvel. Cassaday’s work has been exhibited in Hong Kong, Paris, New York City, and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
He went on to work for “The Big Two”, with prolific stints on DC’s Planetary and Marvel’s Astonishing X-Men, X-Men, Captain America, and Uncanny Avengers, and has recently done work on Dynamite Entertainment’s Doc Savage.
Cassaday has both been nominated and won numerous prestigious industry awards including Eisner, Eagle, and, for his work on Astonishing X-Men, a Spike TV Scream Award.
His recent work can be found in the pages and covers of Dynamite Entertainment’s Doc Savage, and on covers for Marvel’s Miracleman, Magneto, Savage Wolverine, and Captain Marvel and Image’s Starlight.
Trish Forstner is from Baltimore, Maryland and is a relative newcomer to the comic industry but brings a lifetime of experience in creating fun, lovable characters. She’s been drawing since she could hold a pencil. Trish loves classic animation and has drawn influence from many sources, particularly classic 80s and 90s toons. Her love of expression and emotion is on full display in any work she creates. You’ve most recently seen her artwork in the Eisner Award-nominated Stray Dogs from Image Comics and IDW’s My Little Pony comic series, as well as a plethora of variant covers for various independent titles.
Allen Milgrom was born March 6, 1950 in Detroit, Michigan. Al graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in art and design in 1972 and moved to New York. After a year interning at DC Comics with legendary artist Murphy Anderson, Al began inking and, soon after, penciling. He’s worked on lots of comics over the years, (penciling, inking and even some writing) primarily for Marvel Comics, but he also co-created Firestorm at DC Comics and did work at Archie Comics as well as Atlas, Dark Horse, and others. He also did stints as an editor at Marvel and DC.
Married to his wife, Judy, since 1979, they have a daughter and two sons and the cutest grandson and granddaughter ever to walk the earth (of course he may be biased).
Liam Sharp is an award-winning Anglo-American writer and artist. He has worked for all the major comic companies, but is primarily known for his more recent stint at DC, where he drew the best-selling Wonder Woman: Rebirth series, The Lies and The Truth written by Greg Rucka, and the acclaimed The Brave and the Bold: Batman and Wonder Woman series, which he also wrote. He had an epic 24-issue run drawing The Green Lantern, scripted by the legendary Grant Morrison, and produced full-color art on Batman: Reptilian for DC’s Black Label imprint, scripted by the great Garth ‘The Boys‘ Ennis. He wrote, illustrated, and lettered his own creator-owned series for Image Comics, Starhenge – an epic sci-fantasy saga based on the legend of Merlin. He is currently writing and producing art for Spawn: The Dark Aages for Todd McFarlane and Image.
Liam was awarded an honorary doctorate by Derby University in 2022.
Inkpot Award recipient Billy Tucci is a cartoonist best known for his modern-day samurai saga Shi, which began with The Way of the Warrior in 1994. Through his company, Crusade Fine Arts, Shi has been printed in five languages and sold more than 3 million comic books. In addition to his own creations, the graduate of New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology has earned the prestigious Diamond Comics Gem Award and has been nominated for four Eisner Awards. Billy’s DC Comics graphic novel, Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion, was awarded the Military Writers Society of America Gold Medal for its depiction of the highly decorated, real-life 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which was comprised of Japanese-American soldiers. His earnest retelling of the Christmas story in A Child Is Born has quietly turned into an international blockbuster, winning the Christian Small Publisher Book of the Year Award. His critically acclaimed Miss Fury: Joy Division saw the return of the Golden Age Icon for Dynamite Comics. Billy has recently released Shi: Return of the Warrior, Shi: Haikyo, Shi: Omnibus Edition, and Zombie-Sama via Kickstarter and Indiegogo, uniting backers from over fifty countries and bringing Crusade Comics’ previous exclusive crowdfunding campaign totals to over $1,000,000.00.

Award-winning author Sarah A. Hoyt continues her run on Barbarella this coming February with a thrilling new storyline “The Center Cannot Hold.”
Known for writing everything from science fiction and fantasy to mystery and historical fiction, Hoyt quickly took to the character that she read as a child and pitted Barbarella against the brutal dictator know as The Lady. The new series doesn’t miss a beat, picking up with a new mission and taking us into more scintillating science fiction madness. Hoyt is joined on this new title by the talented artist Riccardo Bogani.
Barbarella and her pal Vix are off to the curious creature’s home world to try and stop a war between the Architects and their ancient nemesis, the fearsome Unnamable. The sheer volume of lives that will be lost in a war between two such massive galactic powers is nearly impossible to calculate. To complicate matters, her companion Taln mysteriously vanishes, leaving Barbarella to make her way through this adventure mostly alone, while Vix has to come to terms with the old adage that you can’t go home again. And at least one familiar face will return in this series as secrets are revealed and sins laid bare.
Alongside interior artist Riccardo Bogani, a crew of top cover artists has convened to portray the siren of the spaceways. Superstar Derrick Chew leads the pack, with legendary John Cassaday, Celina, Geebo Vigonte, Jimmy Broxton, cosplayer Rachel Hollon, and previous Barbarella artist Madibek Musabekov also on the team.
Ten years ago, master storyteller Mark Waid – aided across more than 60 issues by founding artist and Eisner Award nominee Peter Krause alongside other artistic collaborators including Diego Barreto, Marcio Takara, Paul Azaceta, and more – delivered the long-awaited final chapter to the Eisner Award-winning saga that brought the once-sterling world of superheroes to new depths of darkness: Irredeemable.
Now, BOOM! brings the three interlocking narratives of the Irredeemable mythos – the original Irredeemable run, plus its hit companion series,Incorruptible, and the spiritual successor co-created by Waid and Krause, Insufferable – together for the first time in The Complete Irredeemable Deluxe Edition Library.
It is available now on Kickstarter collecting each series in deluxe hardcovers along with limited edition printings of the first issues with all-new artwork by InHyuk Lee. The campaign also features upgrades and extras featuring new contributions from John Cassaday, Howard Chaykin, Barry Kitson, Waid, and Krause.
Over the course of the pre-order campaign, BOOM! Studios will be unveiling even more surprises with Stretch Goals that include brand-new covers for all three hardcover volumes by original series cover artist and Eisner Award winner John Cassaday and the promise of “a major announcement for the future of the Irredeemable franchise” with more to be revealed over the next 30 days.
