Review: John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction: Surviving Nuclear Attack #3
Living in today’s society, information is at the tip of most people’s hands. In a matter of minutes, we know information about anything and everything through the information we can find on our smartphones. One of those things that people find out about is human rights issues and the places throughout the globe where there are problems. A hot button topic that’s explored now and again is prisoner abuse.
Prisons are filled with thousands of men and women, each of them being abused by prison guards, other inmates, and other employees. The immediate remedy, which itself is a form of torture, is solitary confinement. As can be seen in shows in like Orange Is The New Black and When They See Us, both have explored the psychological effects it has on different people. In the third issue of Tales Of Science Fiction: Surviving Nuclear Attack, we see how similar circumstances affect the psyche of both the Kutter family and Donnie and his friends.
We find the Kutters having a nice family dinner where they’re homeschooling their children due to their current conditions. The threads that hold their family together start to unravel. We also find Donnie and the rest of his friend, looking for answers. They look at the files left behind and try to find the power source for the bunker. By issue’s end, a tragedy befalls Donnie’s group of friends while their action awakens a long-dormant alarm.
Overall, an eerie installment of an already captivating series that pushes readers to the edge of their seats. The story by Joe Harris is enigmatic and intense. The art by Cat Staggs and Janice Chiang is as eerie as it is beautiful. Altogether, another great issue in this tense thriller.
