Fresh off of last issue’s attack on the Oscars, Marcus ramps up his efforts to discredit Russell’s and Tiburon’s new team of Guardians. Utilizing one of Agent Bennet’s enslaved metas, Russell devises a multi-pronged attack that leads to Tiburon placing an occupying force of Atlantean soldiers in Paris. Seeing this as the first step in what could turn into World War III, Amazonia warns Tiburon that should Atlantis overstep its bounds, she will bring the full might of her people against him. Playing both sides against the middle, Marcus sets the stage to eliminate both Tiburon and Amazonia, leaving Russell alone and at his vengeful lack of mercy.

The Consultant is a comic I’ve been looking forward to checking out since it was first announced a while back. The idea that there’s a “cleaner” who takes care of the less than superhero-like issues is both entertaining and slightly twisted. Written by Jason Sterr, the first issue lives up to the concept and then some with a start that’s twisted and original.

The comic plays off of tropes and types we’ve seen and seen quite often. There’s the Superman like character, the Aquaman like character, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, they’re all here in some ways with slight twists on personalities. That’s part of the entertainment of the issue in that it takes these heroes we’re familiar with and shits all over them. Basically, if you like the idea of Superman hiring hookers and someone dealing with the aftermath, this is a comic for you.

The art by David Maine is pretty solid. I like the character designs and the world as a whole and the scenes that are more “adult” are done in a way that don’t pull you out of the comic. It’s mature without going over the top. The one knock on the comic is that some characters are hard to tell apart, especially at the end of the issue when things get rolling even more. So, while most of the designs are unique and look great some of the white guys look alike.

The comic is entertaining and exactly what I was hoping for, so this is one where I’m coming back for more and to see where it all goes. Sterr delivers some solid twists in the story and where it goes to fix the problems isn’t where I expected. While the concept is exactly what I wanted, the details kept surprising me in a good way.
