Hocus Pocus Bumps New Mutants While Tenet Holds on to First

The New Mutants

Tenet continued to hold on to the top of the box office with an estimated $2.7 million gross over the weekend. That’s down 20.6% from the previous weekend. It brings the film’s domestic gross to $45.1 million after 5 weeks.

Over the week, the film brought in about $20 million at the international box office. It now stands at $262 million at the foreign box office. Worldwide, the film has brought in $307.1 million.

In second place was the re-release of Hocus Pocus. The film earned a little over $1.9 million domestically for the weekend.

That re-release bumped The New Mutants to third place. It earned an estimated $1 million domestically for the weekend, a drop of 14.7%. That brought up those earnings to $20.9 million. Internationally, the film added about $1.6 million over the entire week. There it has grossed $21 million total so far to bring its worldwide earnings to $41.9 million. It continues to have about a 50/50 split for domestic and international earnings, a rarity in today’s box office.

Unhinged dropped to fourth place adding $870,000 to its domestic earnings which now stands at $18.4 million. The drop is just 10.1% from the previous weekend.

Infidel rounds out the top five with an estimated $455,000 domestically, a drop of 40.2%. It has now earned $3.4 million after 3 weeks.

28 films totaled a little under $8.3 million for the weekend box office and 15,744 theaters. That’s about $600,000 less from 9 more films compared to the previous week and about 3,500 fewer theaters. Each theater last week brought in just $462 last week while this week saw the number increase a bit to a little under $527.

Things are about to get much crazier at the box office with Regal Cinemas and Cineworld now shutdown until 2021. The future of movie theaters was in question and now there’s even more to ponder about movie releases as a whole. Will fewer options increase the per average theater earnings? We’ll have to wait and see and anyone claiming definitives is making it up. As the Terminator emphasized, the future is unwritten, and that’s currently very true when it comes to the future of movie theaters.

Tenet and The New Mutant Go First and Second Again at the Box Office While the Empire Strikes Back!

The New Mutants

The past weekend box office looked a lot like the past weekend’s with Tenet taking first and The New Mutants taking second.

Tenet dipped 27.7% from the previous weekend bringing in $3.4 million domestically. That brought its total to $41.2 million after 4 weeks. Internationally, the film is doing better with 85.5% of its current grosses coming from there. It’s international earnings stand at $242 million which is an increase of $39 million over the week. Worldwide, the film has earned $283.2 million.

The New Mutants held on to second place dipping 37.1% from the previous weekend. The film earned a little under $1.15 million for the weekend domestically. It currently stands at $19.5 million. Over the week, the film gained about $2.1 million at the international box office. It’s a rare film with a nearly 50/50 split for grosses at the international and domestic box office. Internationally, the film has earned $19.4 million. That brings its worldwide total to a little under $38.9 million.

With an estimated budget of $67 to $80 million, things aren’t dire for the film but one wonders if it’d have done better with a video-on-demand run instead. Even if just 1 million individuals paid $30, it’d be a net gain as Disney would not have had to split earnings with theaters.

Unhinged moved up to third place for the weekend dipping 22% and bringing in an even $1 million. The film has earned $17.2 million at the domestic box office so far.

Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back has had a re-release bringing in $908,000 and placing the film in fourth place. Its apparently been going on for 11 weeks and the film has earned $1.9 million domestically during the re-release.

Rounding out the top five was Infidel which dropped 46.2% and earned $745,000 to bring its domestic total to $2.7 million after two weeks.

19 films brought in a total of just $8.9 million at the weekend domestic box office. That covers 19,242 theaters and that means each theater brought in just $462. Theaters have to be struggling at this point and one questions if it’d have been smarter to remain closed for a longer period to minimize losses.

Tenet and The New Mutants Again Go First and Second at the Weekend Box Office

The New Mutants

Theaters continue to limp along as not much has changed at the domestic box office. Tenet was again in first place earning an estimated $4.7 million, down 29.9% from the previous weekend.

The film has spent three weeks in released earning just $36.1 million domestically. Internationally, the story is much different as it has crossed the $200 million mark and now stands at $203 million at the foreign box office. Worldwide, the film has earned $239.1 million.

In second place was The New Mutants which held on to the position with an estimated $1.6 million, down 23.4% from the previous weekend. Domestically, the film has earned $17.7 million after four weeks.

Internationally, things aren’t much better for the film as it has earned $17.3 million at the foreign box office. That brings the worldwide total to a little over $35 million.

With an estimated budget of $67 to $80 million, things aren’t dire for the film but one wonders if it’d have done better with a video-on-demand run instead. Even if just 1 million individuals paid $30, it’d be a net gain as Disney would not have had to split earnings with theaters.

In third place was a new film Infidel which brought in $1.5 million.

Unhinged dropped from third to fourth with $1.3 million domestically, down 14.3%. That brings the films’ domestic earnings to $15.7 million.

Rounding out the top five was The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run with $210,000 after six weeks. That film has brought in $4.2 million total domestically.

The 11 films out brought in just under $9.8 million at the domestic box office for the weekend. It’s hard to see how theaters can continue if the demand doesn’t pick up.

On the heels of news that Hany Abu-Assad will direct Infidel’s film adaptation, Image Comics is rushing the breakout hit horror story by bestselling editor and writer Pornsak Pichetshote, artist Aaron Campbell, award-winning colorist and editor José Villarrubia, and letterer/designer Jeff Powell back to print this week, ahead of schedule.

Infidel Will be Collected Into Trade this September

The complete series of the critically acclaimed, powerful new horror story Infidel—by bestselling writer and former Vertigo editor Pornsak Pichetshote and artist Aaron Campbell—will be collected into trade paperback and available this September.

This tautly woven series tackles controversial topics in race and racism and how it can affect people from different cultures and landed a movie deal after just two issues. Michael Sugar (Academy Award-winning producer of Spotlight for Best Picture) and TriStar will adapt the series for the big screen.

Rife with political undertones, Infidel can best be described as Get Out meets Insidious and explores Islamophobia through a haunting and chilling story about one American Muslim woman and her multi-ethnic neighbors who move into a building haunted by creatures that feed on xenophobia.

Infidel trade paperback (ISBN: 978-1-5343-0836-7, Diamond Code JAN188523) will collect issues #1-5 and will hit stores on Wednesday, September 26th and bookstores on Tuesday, October 2nd. The final order cutoff for comics retailers is Monday, August 13th.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Shay

Hit Girl #5 (Image Comics) – I’m excited to see what she does to the Canadians after all the chaos and pain she caused the Colombians in this new story arc.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 12, The Reckoning (Dark Horse Comics) – One year later and the title is the RECKONING so you know it’s gonna be bad news but good action.

Harley Quinn #44 (DC Comics) – Harley is the good guy and really ticked off about her fave bodega going boom boom bye bye.

Brett

Top Pick: Flavor #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was adorable and I can’t wait to read the second of this series focused on a young woman attempting to take care of her parents and run a bakery.

Infidel #4 (Image Comics) – Fantastic horror with a twist with a focus on Islamophobia. Just great.

James Bond: The Body #6 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Wrapping up the series and it’s a good one bringing all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Skyward #3 (Image Comics) – The concept is fantastic and issues entertaining. An Earth where gravity has gone away and there’s a conspiracy about it all and evil corporations that have profited. It’s really good so far.

Tony Stark: Iron Man #1 (Marvel) – Dan Slott moves from spiders to iron men and this first issue is his treatise as to who Tony Stark and Iron Man are. It’s a good first issue and a perfect starting point.

CBR – Image’s Infidel Film Adaptation in the Works at TriStar Pictures – Not too surprising.

Comic Book – Kate Walsh Joins Netflix’s ‘The Umbrella Academy’ – Very cool!

The Comichron – “Get me Spider-Man!”: Sixteen Spidey #800 variants among week’s Top 25 advance reorders – That’s a lot of re-orders.
