Red Sonja Frank Thorne Statue Launches on Indiegogo

The She-Devil with a Sword strikes on Indiegogo! Bring the legendary heroine Red Sonja into your collection with a high quality 1/6 scale resin collectible statue, produced by Dynamite, and now the feature of their very first major preorder campaign on Indiegogo. Sonja’s striking looks, fearsome pose and deadly weaponry in this piece are inspired by her first truly definitive artist, Frank Thorne! Pledge now to preorder the statue and check out other extras in the campaign for more value!

Thorne’s definitive style is brought into the third dimension and your collection in this 1/6 scale collectible statue sculpted and painted lovingly based on the cover to Marvel Feature #4. The Steve Kiwus sculpted piece stands a stunning 12.5 inches tall and features Sonja in a classic pose.

Through her nearly 50 year history, many artists have left their mark on the She-Devil with a Sword. Arguably none have impacted the heroine quite like Frank Thorne. His clean lines, fluid action and slight hint of eroticism on Red Sonja catapulted the character from a supporting footnote in Hyrkanian lore to a worldwide fan-favorite solo star. Through his judging of “Lookalike Contests” in his “Wizard” persona at early conventions, Thorne and Sonja fans even contributed to the rise of cosplay!

After contributing for a few years to western, war and mystery anthologies, Frank Thorne’s popularity exploded when he was handed the artistic reigns of everyone’s favorite Hyrkanian hero. Across barely a three year run, his Red Sonja work cemented him as one of the most treasured and respected artists of the era. Thorne then opted to venture into more independent and risque waters, with his creations the barbarienne Ghita of Alizarr, the Barbarella-esque Lann and other characters for such prestigious publications as Heavy Metal and Playboy.

The statue is also available in black and white and “berzerker” editions and backers can even upgrade to get a limited edition marked and numbered Proof edition.

Backers can choose from a myriad of captivating rewards, to complement the centerpiece statue or to support the campaign at their chosen budget. A selection of graphic novels have been chosen that reprint or represent the Frank Thorne era of Sonja, particularly in the Adventures and Further Adventures of Red Sonja collections. Or go big with the three-volume Red Sonja by Frank Thorne Artist Editions, reproducing his peerless original art at original size. Deluxe hardcover art books are also available to wonder at the artwork produced through the years. And don’t forget the cute Frank Thorne Red Sonja enamel pins!

PayPal Will No Longer Protect Your Crowdfunding “Purchases”

paypal_2014_logo_detailI’ve been saying for a bit now that without some major changes, either within the companies themselves or through regulations by the government, crowdfunding like Kickstarter or IndieGoGo, will hit a wall due to lack of trust. I wrote an apology in 2012 for what I felt was my responsibility for recommended projects that didn’t come through or were delayed to a point of irritation. And since then this site has handled crowdfunding projects much differently when we do promote them.

To protect themselves, some smart consumers had been using PayPal and its Purchase Protection to hedge their bets in a way in case a project does go bust. As of June 25th, that protection is going away as PayPal will be updating their user agreement to exclude crowdfunding. So if a campaign goes bust or doesn’t deliver as promised you can’t dispute the charge to get your money back.

Kickstarter claims that 9% of its projects fail to deliver. With 105,369 projects funded and $2,365,680,654 raised, that failure is in the tens of millions, potentially in the hundreds of millions.

According to The Verge, Kickstarter payments were already not protected, so this mostly impact Indiegogo. Kickstarter has shirked all responsibility when it comes to this issue, and doesn’t permit people to request chargebacks.

PayPal has cited “risks and uncertainties” of crowdfunding as to their reasoning:

In Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, United States and certain other countries, we have excluded payments made to crowdfunding campaigns from our buyer protection programs. This is consistent with the risks and uncertainties involved in contributing to crowdfunding campaigns, which do not guarantee a return for the investment made in these types of campaigns. We work with our crowdfunding platform partners to encourage fundraisers to communicate the risks involved in investing in their campaign to donors.

To me, that’s a vote of lack of confidence by a major player when it comes to payments. With that much money and no one taking responsibility, is it only time before the industry becomes heavily regulated? Time will tell.

IndieGoGo Spotlight: Campaigners #1

Campaigners_KS_Promo_page10_image1by Brendan Hykes

Then year is 2076, America’s tricentennial, and Presidential hopefuls prove their value by beating each other to death. Two high school girls and best friends, the opinionated but shy Kydra and the outgoing transgender Bianca Faye, are about to find out that speaking out against the system could threaten not only their friendship, but their lives. The sitting President, Archie Lennox, will watch their struggle and wonder if they’re right. And what does that mean to a President who beat three men to death for his two terms?

Campaigners is politics and violence and coming-of-age. It’s a look at social justice from both ends. It’s about being best friends, and being maybe not so great at being best friends. It’s about trying harder and getting in over your head and standing your ground.

Written by Brendan Hykes, and drawn by MJ Barros, with letters, logo and production by Sean Rinehart, Campaigners is a 5-issue mini series to be released digital-only, and we are currently raising funds for the first issue on Indiegogo. The funds we raise will cover the art, lettering and production, and anything over our initial goal will be put towards future issues.

Please take a look at our Indiegogo page, contribute if you can, and share the project!

Take a look at the short preview comic and see what you think!

While we’re no longer picking crowdfunding projects to spotlight on our site, we’re allowing project creators to make their case for their project on our platform. We remind individuals, we don’t endorse any of these projects, and that by supporting any crowdfunding project, you’re taking any risks associated with doing so. – the Management
