TOO TOUGH TO DIE: An Aging Punx Anthology

Flop Sweat is an ongoing serialization of Lance Ward’s autobiographical comics arranged chronologically. Previous self-published collections of these comics were featured in The Best American Comics. Ward’s life has been rife with pitfalls: abandonment, addiction, mental illness, sexual assault, arrest, attempted suicide, and even a death experience (not “near-death”, he was clinically deceased!). Yet, through it all he has somehow maintained a positivity about and loyalty to his art, even after crushing his drawing hand!

This second issue delves into Ward’s teen years battling family dysfunction, sex & drugs, another injury and joining the military!

In issue three, Ward is befriended by a shady character while working night shifts at a convenience store leading to cocaine addiction, grand larceny and committal to a psych ward.

This fourth issue finds Ward struggling (and failing) to remember an entire year of his life after waking up in yet another psychiatric hospital.

5.5” x 8.5”, 28 pages. $6
Full-color covers and interior

Junji Ito’s Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection is Out October 16

VIZ Media has announces the release of Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection on October 16th.

The latest release from the famed horror manga creator will receive a hardcover print release under the VIZ Signature imprint and will carry an MSRP of $22.99 U.S. / $32.00 CAN. Digital editions of Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection will also be available for $15.99 via viz.com and the VIZ Manga App, as well as from the Nook, Kobo, Kindle, iBooks, comiXology, and Google Play stores.

Junji Ito meets Mary Shelley! The master of horror manga bends all his skill into bringing the anguished and solitary monster—and the fouler beast who created him—to life with the brilliantly detailed chiaroscuro he is known for. Also included are six tales of Oshikiri—a high school student who lives in a decaying mansion connected to a haunted parallel world. Uncanny doppelgangers, unfortunately murdered friends, and a whole lot more are in store for him. Bonus: The Ito family dog! Thrill to the adventures of Non-non Ito, an adorable Maltese!

Manga creator Junji Ito made his professional manga debut in 1987 and has since gone on to be recognized as one of the greatest contemporary artists working in the horror genre. His titles include Tomie and Uzumaki, which have been adapted into live-action films; GYO, which was adapted into an animated film; and his short story collections Fragments of Horror and Shiver, all of which are available from VIZ Media. Ito’s influences include classic horror manga artists Kazuo Umezu and Hideshi Hino, as well as authors Yasutaka Tsutsui and H.P. Lovecraft.

New Universal Monsters Figures Rise at Toys “R” Us and Comic Shops!

It’s almost that time of year again. The time when creatures and monsters roam the night, and haunt the aisle of our local toy stores! The newest assortment of Universal Monsters action figures is out now at Toys “R” Us and is coming soon to comic shops and specialty stores, as well as an all-new figure of the greatest monster hunter of all time!

Currently at Toys “R” Us are two brand-new 7-inch-scale action figures: Frankenstein’s Monster as he appears in Son of Frankenstein, and a super-poseable version of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Both feature entirely new sculpts by Jean St. Jean, and both come packaged on a blister card with a small display base. Additionally, the Monster comes with the prosthetic arm of Inspector Krogh.

As a bonus, hanging alongside the Creature and Monster is Diamond Select Toys‘ original take on the famous monster hunter, Van Helsing! Also sculpted by St. Jean, Van Helsing stands around 7 inches tall, and comes armed with an axe, a sword, a crossbow and a rifle, all of which can be carried on his back. It’s the perfect companion figure to your Universal Monsters collection!

If you don’t have a Toys “R” Us near you, sleep with one eye open, because all three figures are also coming to your local comic shop in deluxe Select versions! On September 17th, the Universal Monsters Select editions of the Monster and Creature arrive, and each comes with a larger diorama base. The Monster’s base replicates the laboratory wreckage from the end of the film, and the Creature comes with an undersea rock formation, complete with tropical fish and a human skull!

The Select version of Van Helsing includes a cemetery base, featuring two headstones and a female vampire rising from the grave. All three Select figures come packaged in larger, display-ready Select packaging, which has spine artwork for easy shelf reference.

Universal Monsters Black-and-White Legacy Series 2 Box Set

Between 1923 and 1958, Universal Studios released over 60 different monster movies, all in black-and-white, that gave the film world some of its most iconic characters. In honor of that legacy, this deluxe collectors’ box set presents three of the most famous Universal Monsters — Dracula, Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein — in their original-black and-white appearances! These exclusive 7-inch scale figures will only be available as part of this set, and come in a display-quality window box. Designed and sculpted by Rudy Garcia, Gabriel Marquez and Jean St. Jean!

Walking Dead Zombie Vinyl Bust Bank

Unlike the characters in Robert Kirkman’s ongoing comic series The Walking Dead, our future isn’t threatened by a zombie apocalypse. So why don’t you start saving for it? Put aside money for your zombie-proof dream house in this 8-inch vinyl bank depicting a lurker (or is it a roamer?) from the Walking Dead comic book, via the change slot in his back. Perched atop the book’s now-famous logo, this gruesome character will keep any weak-stomached burglars from plundering your nest egg. Sculpted by Eli Livingston!

Universal Monsters Frankenstein Bust Bank

Spinning out of DST’s successful line of Star Wars bust banks comes the all-new Universal Monsters series! The most famous monster of all, Frankenstein, will kick off this new line of 8-inch vinyl banks, which features highly detailed sculpts and paint. From the front it just looks like a high-quality bust, but turn it around and there’s a slot to keep your change in! Nobody will want to raid your savings when they’re safe inside this resurrected giant! Sculpted by Gabriel Marquez!

Universal Monsters Creature from the Black Lagoon Bust Bank

The second release in DST’s new line of vinyl banks was a no-brainer. After all, if you were going to make an 8-inch bust featuring highly detailed sculpts and paint, what monster would you want to see done right? The Creature from the Black Lagoon, of course! The scaly mer-monster has never looked better than in this detailed bank, and if you turn him around you can insert your loose change in a slot behind his gills. He’s the next evolution in banks! Sculpted by Bill Mancuso!
