Principles of Necromancy #1 (Magma Comix) – My first Magma Comix title, and it’s what it says on the tin as well as being completely unexpected. Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Eamon Winkle, and Jay Fotos spin the saga of Dr. Eyes, a necromancer, who brings back a tribe of nondescript barbarians from the dead/grave injuries in new and more messed up ways. This title is truly Conan meets Cronenberg, and some of Eyes’ inventions are so haunting that the colors drop out, and we’re just left with Winkle’s lovely, twisted line art. Principles of Necromancy #1 is a proof of concept, and I’m intrigued to see what direction future installments go in. Overall: 8.2 Verdict: Buy

These gruesome miracles are only stepping stones for Dr. Eyes’ ultimate ungodly goal: to overcome death itself. And now, a band of decimated barbarians, desperate to bargain for their lives, may just make the ideal next test subjects… The Principles of Necromancy #1 not only kicks off a new series, but a new publisher in Magma Comix.

Being the first comic out of the gate for a new(ish) publisher puts extra pressure on it. Not only do you have to get people interested in the series but it also gives hints and clues as to what we can expect from the publisher too. Luckily, The Principles of Necromancy #1 is a solid debut mixing fantasy and horror in a comic that can be enjoyed as a series and a one-shot.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, The Principles of Necromancy #1 is an interesting comic. It’s main character is mysterious, delivering a Faustian bargain for a group of warriors locked in battle. The barbarians are hurting and weakened and that makes them ideal to make a deal. The wheel spun is one that’s unexpected and of horror, going in directions that is unexpected and intriguing.

Dr. Eyes is a strange character who feels like a spin on the classic Cryptkeeper, telling us creepy stories delivering twisted visions. But, this Cryptkeeper is an active participant in the horror.

Eamon Winkle delivers the nightmares with almost glee at times. Dr. Eyes’ excitement at his abominations oozes off the page. With color by Jay Fotos and lettering by Shawn Lee, the visuals of the comic easily blend fantasy and horror for a result that feels new and unexpected in ways. But, most importantly, the sheer terror of what’s happening is front and center. We can see the fear in eyes as what is happening is revealed.

The Principles of Necromancy #1 is a solid start that horror fans should enjoy. The fact that it can be enjoyed on its own is a bonus making it a comic that can be picked up and read or continue on for further twisted visions. It’s also a solid start to the publisher making us even more excited to see what’s next.

Magma Comix heads to Wondercon 2024

Magma Comix is hitting the road to sunny Anaheim, California, to exhibit at their first pop-culture convention, WonderCon 2024 taking place March 29 – 31!

The team will be hosting a number of talented comic book creatives at Booth #1211 for signings, featuring a number of creators on Magma’s forthcoming publishing roster including The Scale Trade writer Steve Orlando, The Principles of Necromancy co-writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, series artist Eamon Winkle, and incentive cover artist Darick Robertson. 

In addition, there will be a very exciting panel discussion, Magma Comix Launches New Creator-Owned Titles, preview drops, portfolio reviews, and an exciting WonderCon event issue of The Principles of Necromancy #1 with a limited cover by Darick Robertson available for purchase. Magma Comix partners with Lunar Distribution

Boutique comics publisher Magma Comix has announced a worldwide deal with Lunar Distribution, effective as of this week. The partnership will give Lunar the non-exclusive rights to roll out and distribute Magma Comix’s individual issues to comic book stores beginning with their three launch titles: Silicon Bandits (Jason Starr, Dalibor Talajić) and The Principles of Necromancy (Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly, Eamon Winkle) in April 2024, and The Scale Trade (Steve Orlando, Megan Huang) in May 2024.

Magma Comix announces its first wave of 2024 creators

Recognizing that it all starts with the creator, Magma Comix has announced its first wave of creators spearheading the publisher’s forthcoming titles: Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Eamon Winkle, Jason Starr, Dalibor Talajić, Steve Orlando, and Megan Huang!

Since reestablishing itself as independent publisher in 2023, Magma Comix holds steadfast to empowering comic book creators with the freedom and support necessary to make their 100% creator-owned passion projects that will excite and enthrall our readers. All creators signed to the publisher receive a fair and transparent deal with advance royalties, as well as first-look deals with partners to be revealed. The publisher will offer direct market support through a multi-distributor approach with simple, low-risk ordering for retailers, including returnability and a limited number of variant covers.
