KLAUS #1 (of 6)

Retail Price: $3.99
Writer: Grant Morrison
Artist: Dan Mora
Cover Artists:
Main Cover: Dan Mora
Jackpot: Frazer Irving
BOOM! 10 Years Incentive Cover: Brian Stelfreeze
Incentive Cover: Chris Burnham

What’s to Love: Grant Morrison is one of the most prolific and best-selling writers in comics, earning a reputation for his ability to effectively revamp superheroes like Animal Man, Batman, and the X-Men. His creator-owned titles are also highly praised, including The Invisibles, Nameless, We3, and Joe the Barbarian because no one tells mythical stories better than him. In Klaus, Grant reimagines one of the biggest cultural myths in history, and we could not be more excited to pair him with one of our homegrown talents, Dan Mora (Hexed)!

What It Is: Set in a dark fantastic past of myth and magic, Klaus tells the story of how Santa Claus really came to be. Where did he begin? What was he like when he was young? And what happens when he faces his greatest challenge? Drawing on Santa Claus’ wilder roots in Viking lore and Siberian shamanism—taking in the creepier side of Christmas, and characters like the sinister Krampus—Klaus is “Santa Claus: Year One.”

Review: Deep State #5

deepstate005For those that thought that the first story arc was a one hit wonder, they might find some satisfaction in that critique throughout much of this issue.  The series is after all stuck with the association to the X-Files ven if it likes it or not, and the first story arc could be said to be simply a minor change of the format which made the television series so successful.  Those that choose to write off this series do so at the risk of missing something pretty spectacular though, and that is as much the case here with the beginning of the second story arc as it was during the first four issue.

The plot follows a basic enough story, that of a gun that can shoot but the bullets also travel through time.  Thus an assassin can pull the trigger and walk away without ever having to worry about being discovered.  Much of this issue follows the action of this assassin and the duo of investigators as they try to get tto the bottom of what seems like a fairly routine case.  In fact as it is presented here the story at times almost feels like a one shot of a semi-paranormal concept which seems like it will be wrapped up quickly.  It is actually that feeling that there is only the surface story that makes this story all the more compelling with the plot twist at the end.  It is like Jack Ruby and Lee Harvey Oswald in a sense, but with a twist that would make conspiracy theorists drool.

Once again the creative team proves that they have what it takes to use what seems like an exhausted concept, excpet that they manage to breathe new life into it.  There are a few shortcuts taken here for the movement of the plot, and the discovery of the powers of the gun is one which could have been expanded on, but in the end the story doesn’t need it.  Instead it relies on some complacency before the shock value of the ending.  It reminds the reader once again not to underestimate the twists and turns of this series and that each issue is carefully plotted for what is to come next.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Rebels #1 coverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Brett

Top Pick: Rebels #1 (Dark Horse) – Brian Wood takes us to the past, the American Revolutionary War, in a new series that might be historical, but has some solid themes and points that reverberate today. Having read the first issue, it’s beyond fantastic and well worth checking out.

Convergence: The Questions #1 (DC Comics) – It’s written by Greg Rucka and art by Cully Hammer. Do you need any more reason to check out this comic? Out of everything to spin out of DC’s Convergence event, this one has me the most excited.

Copra Round Two (Bergen Street Comics) – Michel Fiffe’s Copra might seem like a knock-off of the Suicide Squad at first, but the series has evolved into a voice all its own. You probably can’t get individual issues in your store, but this trade collects what you’ve been missing out on.

Evil Empire #12 (BOOM! Studios) – I swear when I interviewed writer Max Bemis before the series launched it was going to be longer. But this is it in an oversized final issue. The series has focused on a President whose take over and brought pure chaos to the US. No idea how it’ll all wrap up in one final issue.

Imperium #3 (Valiant) – Speaking of crazy world leaders…. Valiant has taken on the concept of super human beings living in the real world head-on with this series which focuses on Toyo Harada attempting to bring about a Utopia, even if he has to fight and kill for it.

Edward

Top Pick: Grimm Fairy Tales White Queen #3 (Zenescope) – This miniseries has been compact and entertaining while also revealing some interesting bits of Calie’s past.  The promised White Queen versus Trickster battle looks pretty cool too.

Deep State #5 (BOOM! Studios) – The unexpected success of the first story arc drew many in and didn’t let them go.  It will be interesting to see what the creative time has lined up for an encore.

Jungle Girl Season 3 #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – A modern take on the jungle girl genre of the golden age.  This series doesn’t hold anything back in making the genre relevant to today’s readers.

Rebels #1 (Dark Horse) – This is a strange time and place for a comic book story to be set in (the American Revolutionary Wars), but it tells the first part of what seems like a compelling story.

Spider-Woman #6 (Marvel) – The reboot within a reboot was impressive enough.  It will be interesting to see where they take Jessica from here.

You know all those conspiracy theories you hear about? Like how the Jonestown Massacre was a failed MKULTRA experiment by the government, or how Lee Harvey Oswald was trained and brainwashed to be an assassin? Well, what if some of those were true? Deep State is a dream (nightmare?) come true for conspiracy theory nuts!

John Harrow doesn’t exist, and his job is to make sure that other things don’t exist, too. At any given time, the government is running dozens of black book operations, experiments that aren’t on any official record and are never acknowledged to exist. Most of the time, they go as expected and the public is never the wiser. John Harrow’s job is to handle them when they don’t, and do anything to make sure the government’s secrets stay just that—secret. Collects issues #1-4. Newly optioned by 20th Century Fox TV!
