Superman Soars Into First Place with a Character Solo Best… Not Adjusted for Inflation

Superman

It should be no surprise, Superman took the top spot of the weekend box office with an impressive $125 million domestically. The movie grossed an additional $95 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $220 million. It’s definitely a boost for DC’s film slate and a good sign for the start of the new DC Studios which is attempting to reinvigorate the comic publisher’s cinematic universe. It’s also a solid debut for the classic character, though when adjusted for inflation, not the best for the Man of Steel.

Let’s see how that compares to previous releases with adjusted numbers for inflation (worldwide gross is adjusted with the same U.S. Inflation Calculator when it needs to be done for each individual country):

  • Superman (1978)
    • Domestic Debut: $7.5 million ($36.8 million adjusted)
    • Domestic Gross: $134,478,449 ($663,038,567.60 adjusted)
    • Worldwide Gross: $300,478,449 ($1.481 billion)
  • Superman II (1980)
    • Domestic Debut: $14,100,523 ($55,010,007.60 adjusted)
    • Domestic Gross: $108,185,706 ($422,062,111.40 adjusted)
    • Worldwide Gross: $216,385,706 ($844,179,987.61 adjusted)
  • Superman III (1983)
    • Domestic Debut: $13,352,357 ($43,095,536.58 adjusted)
    • Domestic Gross: $59,950,623 ($193,494,247.22 adjusted)
    • Worldwide Gross: $80,250,623 ($259,013,720.11 adjusted)
  • Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
    • Domestic Debut: $5,683,122 ($16,082,084.63 adjusted)
    • Domestic Gross: $15,681,020 ($44,374,111.75 adjusted)
    • Worldwide Gross: $30,281,020 ($85,689,155.76 adjusted)
  • Superman Returns (2006)
    • Domestic Debut: $52,535,096 ($83,770,806.72 adjusted)
    • Domestic Gross: $200,081,192 ($319,043,156.68 adjusted)
    • Worldwide Gross: $391,081,192 ($623,605,731.08 adjusted)
  • Man of Steel (2013)
    • Domestic Debut: $116,619,362 ($160,926,880.09 adjusted)
    • Domestic Gross: $291,045,518 ($401,623,249.97 adjusted)
    • Worldwide Gross: $670,145,518 ($924,755,765.84 adjusted)
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
    • Domestic Debut: $166,007,347 ($222,349,980.64 adjusted)
    • Domestic Gross: $330,360,194 ($442,483,926.57 adjusted)
    • Worldwide Gross: $874,362,803 ($1,171,120,169.27 adjusted)

The last Superman is an impressive debut, especially for a franchise with a shaky past for success, in a post COVID cinema, and in a world struggling in every way you’d expect, but when adjusted for inflation, it’s the second best for the character. There’s tough competition coming with the reboot of Marvel’s Fantastic Four which will eat into its audience but also really turn it into a race of word of mouth from previous movie goers to determine success. To also achieve the billion dollar mark, the movie will need to up its international gross which currently accounts for 43.8% and it’s a franchise that traditionally hasn’t done great internationally, though that shifted with the last two releases. It’s a lot to celebrate, but the film has a lot of headwinds against it in the coming weeks.

In second place was Jurassic World: Rebirth which dropped 56.5% in its second week to gross $40 million and bring its domestic total to $232.1 million. Internationally, it grossed $126.2 million of the week to bring that to $297.3 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $529.4 million.

F1: The Movie came in third with $13 million domestically which increases that total to $136.2 million. Over the week, it grossed $73.1 million internationally for a total of $257.2 million for a worldwide gross of $393.4 million.

How to Train Your Dragon slipped one spot to come in fourth with $7.8 million to increase its domestic gross to $239.8 million. Over the week, it grossed $28.1 million internationally to bring that to just under $321 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $560.8 million.

Elio rounded out the top five with $3,900,000 to bring that to $63.7 million. Internationally, it grossed $11.9 million over the week where it has now grossed $53.6 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $117.3 million.

In comic movie news…

Thunderbolts* added $9,000 to its domestic total this weekend to bring that to $189.9 million and internationally it added $100,000 over the week where it has now grossed $192.1 million for a worldwide total of $382 million. Between the budget and marketing, the film needs around $425 million to break even.

The weekend box office saw a total of 59 films gross $201,148,969 from 27,585 theaters compared to last weekend’s $155,578,531 from 57 films and 30,520 theaters. This weekends average was $7,291.97 compared to last weekend’s $5,097.59.

Mini Review: Superman takes the sports film formula and throws in a dash of Silver, Bronze, and Copper Age of Comics kookiness

Superman

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics, sees more movies, and watch more tv than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

Superman (2025) – Boring, annoying people say Superman isn’t a good superhero because he’s “overpowered”. In Superman, writer/director James Gunn swats that notion away like the Man of Steel does to Lex Luthor’s Silicon Valley rent-a-goons. He begins the story with Superman’s first defeat, and he and a game David Corenswet break down the iconic superhero putting him through the wringer before building up stronger and braver than ever.

Superman takes the sports film formula and throws in a dash of Silver, Bronze, and Copper Age of Comics kookiness while finishing off with a timely helping of contemporary politics. Superman uses otherworldly and crazy sci-fi tech as metaphors to create cathartic hope in a world run by billionaire criminals that sadly aren’t chilling in Belle Reve prison. The film has its preachy moments, but I’m in the choir so I didn’t mind although let’s definitely say that James Gunn has read his Larry Niven.

However, for the most part, Superman is pop rock fun that showcases Gunn’s skill with making it easy to connect with quirky characters in ensemble casts. I came out of the theater clamoring for Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo has the freak factor.), Metamorpho, and a Bwahahaha-type Justice League film while still savoring the triumph of nurture over nature, truth over deception, justice over venality, and populism over plutocracy that I had just witnessed. Also, wow, Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have incredible chemistry as Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

Overall Verdict: 8.0

James Gunn’s Superman is a crowd pleasing blockbuster that revives the classic superhero

Superman

James Gunn has done the impossible with Superman. Yes, it’s a crowd pleasing blockbuster based on a comic property but that’s been done so often it’s starting to become boring. Yes, it revives the fortunes of a superhero franchise that’s seen better days but that’s been done to great effect with Batman, Spider-Man and (hopefully) Fantastic Four.

What James Gunn has done with his masterpiece film is to create a comic book movie that simulates the experience of reading a comic book.

Most people reading this review are fans of characters who were created long before we were born. At some point all of us walked into the local comic shop (or pharmacy, stationary store or 7-11) and picked up an issue of a publication featuring a hero in colorful, skin-tight clothing doing battle with the forces of evil. The adventure had already begun when we arrived but we didn’t care. The story at hand pulled us in and made us want to know more.

Gunn’s movie opens with a block of text filling us in on the background of what is to come. It’s a  move that can’t help but evoke Star Wars’ legendary opening in media res. From there the movie is a frantic dash to the finish line with threat following threat as the plot begins to develop.

Gunn uses exposition sparingly, letting the characters speak for themselves. He doesn’t waste time telling you the history of the Green Lantern Corps or that Mister Terrific is an Olympic gold medalist and the third smartest man in the world. He lets Nathan Fillion and Edi Gathegi tell you what you need to know with their performances and pithy, to-the-point dialog. I don’t know if Isabella Merced’s Hawkgirl is a reincarnated Egyptian princess or a Thanagarian space-cop and I don’t care. She has a chip on her shoulder, a big mace and a pitch perfect battle cry.

For his main cast Gunn relies heavily on archetypes. David Corenswet’s Superman lacks the wry wit of Christopher Reeve and the majestic gravitas of Henry Caville but he makes up for it with an appealing earnestness and a desire to do good in a world that is more complicated than he’d like to imagine. Nicholas Hoult’s Luthor is a more peevish take on the character then we’ve seen but turns up the menace in one of the movie’s few genuinely disturbing scenes that also brought tears to my eyes. The real standout performance is given by Rachel Brosnahan. Past attempts to render Lois Lane on the big screen have all been missing the essential combination of toughness and compassion that attracts Superman’s attention but makes her more than just his girlfriend. Brosnahan displays these traits in spades making her the definitive movie version.

Superman isn’t perfect. The humor, which I enjoyed, may come across as heavy handed to viewers who prefer more serious superhero fare. There’s also a third act reveal that makes the plot seem more complicated than it needs to be in retrospect. Most damning of all is a revelation about Superman’s homeworld Krypton that undermines the movie’s pro-immigrant message at a time when it is sorely needed in the real world. For all its flaws Superman is well worth your time. It’s a beautifully shot, superbly acted film full of color, action and memorable moments with characters that you will come to love if you didn’t go in loving them already. I enjoyed it more than any movie I’ve seen this year and more than any superhero movie I’ve seen in a long time.

And yes, Krypto does steal the show.

Overall: 9/10

Tom Rhys Harries is DC Studios’ Clayface

Clayface

One of the more intriguing movies being worked on by DC Studios is Clayface, a movie based on the tragic Batman villain. Toms Rhys Harries has been cast in the main role. Toms Rhys Harries is a relatively fresh face with a mix of film and television.

The film will be directed by James Watkins, who most recently directed Speak No Evil and looks to have dipped his toes a lot in the horror genre.

There’s been numerous takes on Clayface but the character debuted in Detective Comics #40 in June 1940 and was originally created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. The character generally is a moderately successful actor and the most well know depiction has him suffering a physical change where his body can morph like it was made out of clay who initially takes revenge against those in the movie industry before turning to a broader life of crime.

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation announces Mister Miracle

Mister Miracle

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation have announced that they have greenlit Mister Miracle, an adult animated series based on DC’s critically acclaimed and Eisner Award–winning 12-issue comic book series from Tom King and Mitch Gerads. King is the Executive Producer and Showrunner for the show. A network/where the show will air has yet to be determined.

No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick — and escape death itself?

Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife Big Barda have built for themselves on Earth. With war raging between their home worlds of Apocalypse and New Genesis, Scott’s cruel adoptive father Darkseid seems to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation — the ultimate weapon that will give Darkseid total dominance over the universe.

As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow ever higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace. But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he’s found with the woman he loves.

And so begins the odyssey of Scott Free, Mister Miracle: a harrowing, hilarious, heart wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself.

Based on characters from DC, Mister Miracle represents the second adult animated series from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios following the season one success of Creature Commandos. Season two of Creature Commandos is currently in production for HBO Max. Other recent series greenlights from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation include Starfire!, My Adventures with Green Lantern, and DC Super Powers.

Warner Bros. Discovery Splits Into Two Impacting DC Comics and DC Studios

Warner Bros. Discovery

It wasn’t that long ago that Warner Bros. and Discovery merged created a weird blob of a company that never quite seemed to get its act together. And now, the mega company is splitting into two companies again with the streaming and studios being one company and the TV and cable assets being another with all of this expected to wrap up in 2026.

Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, and HBO Max, plus respective film and television libraries will be under a new “Streaming and Studios” company headed by current WBD CEO David Zaslav. “Global Networks” will be entertainment, sports, news television brands like CNN, Bleacher Report, TNT Sports, and more with WBD CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels as President and CEO of the Global Networks. The Global Networks will receive a 20% stake in the Streaming and Studios spinoff. The branding of the two is unknown though guesses are “Warner Bros.” and “Discovery.” The two companies will be independently-operated and publicly-traded.

Though it has not been named specifically, it’s believed that DC Comics will go to the “Streaming and Studios” company joining DC Studios. Zaslav in an investment call said there was a ten-year plan for DC (though it did not specify if that was for the movies, comics, or both).

The belief is the split is meant to deal with losses and debt of the current company which stands at about $37 billion. It will take out a $17.5 billion short-term loan to buy back some of that debt. The majority of the debt will fall under the Global Networks. The 2022 merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. created more than $50 billion in debt.

The move follows other similar moves like Comcast spinning off most of NBCUniversal cable networks into a separate company called Versant and Lions Gate Entertainment separating Starz cable network from its film and television studio in May.

Last week, about 59% of WBD shareholders voted against executive pay packages in a symbolic criticism of the company’s leadership.

The spin-offs are believed to be a move for consolidation down the road (it was just two years ago there were rumors of Warner Bros. Discovery merging with Paramount). Others have said that moves like this are “paper solutions” to make it look like things are being done but don’t really resolve issues with the current entertainment environment like fracturing viewership and the mounting subscription services.
